Poetry Unit for Senior Students (Bundled)

Many teachers hate teaching poetry because they don’t know where to begin. This unit will make you and your students love poetry. This complete, no prep unit is a great way to start! This 2 and a half week unit includes a student guide, 12 detailed lesson plans, 2 multimedia presentations (no internet connection required), a detailed answer key with annotated poems, and an end of the unit evaluation with answer key.

Just print it and teach it.

This HUGE bundle includes individual lessons devised to teach students the importance of:

• Figurative language (its uses and effects)
• How to read poetry
• How to understand and apply symbolism and imagery
• The importance of rhythm
• The importance of tone and attitude in a poem
• Types of poetry
• How to analyse poetry
• How to appreciate poetry (even when you don’t understand it)

This unit’s focus is the analysis of poetry and teaches students how to make inferences, which is a skill they must learn for their other subjects as well.

Poems include authors such as: Emily Dickenson, Dorothy Parker, Maya Angelou, Thomas Gray, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Alfred Noyes, T.S. Eliot, Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Frost, Pearl Jam, Langston Hughes, and Walt Whitman. The Unit includes 21 different poems.

The unit has been conceived to last 12 days – with 65 minute periods (although they are easy to modify).

The unit includes:

1 – The teacher guide (Contains 12 comprehensive lesson plans to teach the poems included in the unit. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO TEACH THIS UNIT HAS BEEN DONE FOR YOU. )

2 – The student package (Contains students’ notes , poems, and questions) (26 pages)

3 – The answer key includes annotated poems and answers to all student activities (saving you time).

4 – Included is a test with multiple choice questions as well as a development question. All answers are included. (Word format for easy changes)

5 – 2 PowerPoint presentations – one multimedia presentation to introduce the unit (17 slides) and the second to reinforce the use of imagery and symbolism (19 slides) – NO INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED

A total of 63 pages + 36 slides are included in this package.

This unit is complete, and does all of the thinking for you. All you need to do is to print out and photocopy the student package and you’re set.

Superhero Theme Behavior Calendars 2017-2018 (Editable) for Classroom Management

 

This set contains EDITABLE calendars for the 2017-2018 school year (August 2017-July 2018) AND templates for future years! Each calendar has editable behavior codes, a place to enter your e-mail address, and label the day if needed. The calendars are in color, black and white, and with regular font. The calendars show Monday-Friday only so it does not confuse the students with weekends.

The behavior calendar provides daily behavior documentation and opens communication with parents. I have my students color in the behavior earned for the day in the square at the end of the day.

Some teachers like the monthly calendar and others prefer to hand out a new calendar on a Monday instead of mid-week. Choose between the monthly calendar or a monthly calendar that is Monday – Friday.

I love teaching Shakespeare’s plays and I want you to love it too. I’ve been teaching and improving this unit for over 10 years. I have literally done all the thinking for you.

This unit has everything a teacher needs to teach Hamlet. I’m aware that not everyone is comfortable with Shakespeare. Because of this, I have created this unit from my years of experience teaching the play so all of the thinking has been done for you. Just photocopy and teach. Seriously it’s that easy.
There’s no longer a need for hours of research and piecing together bits of information and activities found to teach the play.
This is a whole, complete unit, from scene summaries, important notes and annotations notes to help students understand what they are reading. I have also included an introduction to the play, a student guide, a teacher guide, quizzes, a creative assignment, and tests (all with answers and evaluation grids), and a comprehensive answer key. Everything has its place and teaches a specific skill.

In addition, I’ve used the 1831 edition of the novel to create this unit.

The unit is appropriate for students in grades 10, 11 and 12.

Looking for a meaningful and effective way to teach poetry? This unit is a fun way to learn and experiment with figurative language. It uses a mixture of contemporary songs and traditional poetry to teach students about themes and to help them learn the various forms of poetry. The creative, hands on activities also focus on the importance of having a voice and using it properly.

The unit covers subjects such as: bullying, courage, standing up for yourself and for others, standing up for one’s convictions and discovering what is important to students.

This unit uses poetry to help students have a better understanding of themselves and to stand up for things they believe in.

The files are in PDF format and are zipped for convenience.

I have compiled a list of 20 activities that I use during the first few weeks of school – some of these can be repeated many times through out the year as well. It also includes a list of the 10 books that I like to read in the first weeks of school.
Many of these ideas need no materials or very little materials and little to no prep time.

Please note – this is not a product. This is a compilation of ideas that I have gained in over 20+ years of teaching. Any materials needed will most likely already be found in your classroom.

Hello my friends! Have you started to think about Back to School yet? (Has anyone ever really stopped?)

It’s an exciting time of year, and I always find it easier to sleep when I at least have the first few days planned out – and that involves getting to know my students. I like to find out who they are as people, how they feel about various aspects of school, get a glimpse of their skills, and most importantly – know how they’ll be getting home from school!

Disclaimer: This activity is by no means a guaranteed method of validating a child’s transportation arrangements for one day or the entire school year, but does make a nice introduction to a graphing activity.

 

I wanted to share this ten page Back to School literacy sampler with you, so you will have a window into some of the products I use with my K-2 students at the beginning of the year.

What else is in the BTS sampler?

 

I do not want to ruin the surprise, but I will tell you that this sampler could lead you to more free samples…especially if you like Sight-Word PreEmergent (Level aa) or Emergent (Level A and B) readers with sentence puzzles and fun follow ups. 

Ok, getting carried away now. Almost told you about the crazy fun game I’m making. But I didn’t! 

I will leave you with this thought, however. Start collecting smart phone boxes.

These simple parent letters are designed to help you and your students communicate with their parents about the first day of school. This freebie includes letters for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.

This is an editable PowerPoint document. You must have PowerPoint to use this file.

Each page contains two text boxes that you can fill with your own text prior to printing. Alternatively, you can delete the text in the boxes and print the page with no text if you would prefer to hand write your notes.

You can choose to prepare these notes in their entirety before the first day of school by filling the text boxes with information about what you have planned and what you want parents to know going forward.

If you would prefer, you can type a little note in the bottom text box, but leave the top box empty for your students to fill in at the end of the day.

A third option would be to use the bottom box to hand write a quick note about each particular child and how their first day went.

English Grammar Cheat Sheet

 

Product Description

This “Cheat Sheet” was designed to help students while writing in English. This at a glance 2 page sheet is colorful and has an easy to find layout to help students remember certain important things while they write.

I allow my students to use this in class when writing a test. This is not a grammar lesson, but it will remind students about the grammar they’ve learned in the past.

Some of the reminders included:

– parts of speech
– transitional words
– quotation marks (how and when to use them)
– basic sentence structure
– spelling tips (plurals of nouns and IE rule)
– puncutaion rules (apostrophe, colon, semicolon

The other side of the page has comma rules:

Our students should learn about kindness and inclusion during character education and as part of cultural education in foreign language classes. This free activity based on Un Monstre à Paris is to be used to learn about some names (terms of endearment or insults) that are used in the movie, and to launch a discussion about name calling, and how it is respectful to use terms of endearment only in the right context.

Back to School Getting to Know Me Forms for both Kindergarten and Special Education. The Special Education Form will work great, especially for nonverbal and multi-disabled students of all ages K-12. The Kindergarten Form will also work for higher functioning special education students or even Pre-school students. The forms are meant for the parent to fill out, and students who are able to respond to some of the questions can help their parent fill the form out.

MyPlate is the nutrition education program that has taken the place of the USDA’s Food Pyramid. My picture book, Jack & the Hungry Giant Eat Right with MyPlate, provides a kid-friendly introduction to MyPlate. Like the traditional fairy tale, Jack climbs up the beanstalk and enters the giant’s castle. The giant scoops him up, says “I’m hungry!” so the terrified Jack makes a dive for it. The giant catches him and advises him to be careful. Waldorf turns out to be a nice giant as well as a wonderful chef who is delighted to invite Jack to enjoy a healthy meal. The full color artwork has large illustrations of the fruits, vegetables, and other food groups as they’re being prepared.

This FREE packet contains the I Can Fill Up My Plate! printables for students to respond to writing prompts and write lists of foods in the Fruit, Vegetables, Grains, Protein, and Dairy groups. Next they decide which foods to put on their plate. They label the foods and color the page. They may draw the foods or paste cut-outs in a collage. To make the book available in your school, please request it from your librarian.
