Surviving the Last Weeks of School

By: Shametria L. Routt, The Routty Math Teacher

It’s April!! For me this month means a time for celebration—it’s my birth month. For many Americans though, it’s a most dreaded time of the year because it means that they have to send a very large check to the government for the amount of tax debt they did not pay during the 12 months of 2016. For teachers, it means we are entering the home stretch and the last weeks of the school year. Now, any parents who have happened upon this blog post are saying—why is this a problem. But, as teachers, we all know that:

Last weeks of the school year = Crazy time!

Managing student engagement and behaviors at the end of the school year can be a challenge for even our most experienced teachers. Trust me when I say that keeping them engaged is how to win the battle. The more engaged they are in tasks that are both developmentally appropriate and challenging, the less off-task behavior they will display.

Having been an educator for the past 14 years and experiencing 14 end-of-year crazy times, I would like to share some of my favorite problem solving and critical thinking strategies I used to keep my students engaged during the last weeks of the school year.

Product Description

Group work is always tricky to evaluate because there is so much going on. In addition, as educators, we are required to give detailed feedback on students’ performances.

I created this FREE document to make the teacher’s job easier, and to allow students to be responsible for their success as well.

Self-evaluation grids are a great way to guide students in their evaluations. Students will know exactly what is expected of them and will be made responsible for their success. This package can also easily be changed to be used as peer evaluations.

This self-evaluation grid will help students as well as teachers to assess students’ group work. When students use this grid to assess their work, there are no surprises when they receive their final mark. This grid, in particular, allows the students to become organized and responsible for their individual parts.

These self-evaluation grids are also very helpful to teachers:
 Helps the teacher justify the final mark;
 Helps to identify students’ weaknesses and strengths;
 Helps parents and students better understand the task required;
 Helps teachers create rubrics for the final evaluation.

Because of formatting issues, this package was created in a PDF document, but I can easily email you a Word file to be easily modified and changed according to the individual teacher’s needs.

It’s teaching made easy!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Sight Word – I”

by Amy Biddison – Teaching in Blue Jeans

Kindergarten – 1st Grade

I Sight Word Practice Page
Use this page to have your students practice the sight word “I”. Students will trace the word, write the word, rainbow write the word (write inside the bubble letters in different colors), circle the word and build the word by cutting out the letters and gluing them in the correct box. Great for a sight word center or group practice.

Note: the little circles in the Build the Word squares are for dots of glue. My kiddos are just starting with glue so I wanted this reminder as a guide. Hope it helps your kids too!

For other sight word practice pages see my store. I have a kindergarten set, a color words set and numbers zero to ten set. More coming soon. If you have specific words you would like please contact me. I would be happy to create a custom set for you.
