⭐ Give students the chance to decompose two-digit numbers in more than one way while working with a partner in this engaging place value game! In Closest to 200, students roll dice, decide how to arrange the digits to create a two-digit number, and strategically try to get as close to 200 as possible after five rounds. They model each number with base-10 blocks in more than one way, encouraging hands-on learning and math talk. This partner game is perfect for math centers and helps students compose and decompose numbers flexibly while also building problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Being able to compose and decompose numbers in more than one way builds deep place value understanding and number flexibility—skills that support addition, subtraction, and mental math. Adding a layer of strategy helps students think critically and make intentional choices about numbers.

Fall season, Pumpkin shapes puzzle game activity for kids in black and white for the classroom or at home for young learners.

Kids match the two pieces of the puzzle to complete the shape. Include 8 shapes inside the pumpkins: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, heart, diamond, ellipse, and semicircle. Also includes worksheets with pasting and coloring activity.

  • Downloaded PDF file, ready to print Piece Size: 1.5X2.6 inch.
  • Recommended printing on cardboard, thick paper, or laminate for long use.
  • Each image can be cut into 4 pieces for an extra challenge.
  • You can also use the pieces to play memory games. Place all pieces face down and flip over 2 to make a match. If a match is made, remove those pieces.

Halloween Graphing Page

Witch’s Hat

These Halloween pages may be used to graph anything.

The idea is to choose a HAT for the witch.

Name each (or as many as you need) of the hats and then use for any activity.

e.g. preschoolers can color each of the hats a different color, then look for objects around the room in that color. Fill in one space for each of them to decide what hat the witch will wear (the one with the most objects in this color 🙂 )

These Halloween worksheets were originally created for an incredibly fun game. It includes paper hat, rings that we throw at them and fill in the chart to decide on the hat.

On each of the hats there is something that we read (word, number, letter, etc.)

This is a sample of a year long common-core aligned interactive notebook writing program that improves student writing through sentence imitation (generative grammar). Each day, the teacher guides students through a scaffolded imitation of a sentence.

At the end of the week, students will use the sentence patterns they’ve experimented with to construct a paragraph. At the end of the six weeks, students will construct an essay using a variety of sentence patterns that they’ve experimented with.

Each of the six week sections deals with a different type of writing: Narrative 1 (Descriptive), Narrative 2 (Plot and Dialogue), Explanatory 1 (Develop Facts and Details), Explanatory 2 (Explain With Quotes and Graphics), Argumentative 1 (Point and Counter Point), and Argumentative 2 (Making Your Point With Reason and Evidence).

I have a year long common core aligned set of this writing program coming out for grades 11 &12, and 6, 7, & 8.

Halloween Read and Color PPT Freebie.

Have some Halloween fun with this read and color PPT activity! Students must color in and complete the Halloween picture by reading the information on each slide.

Kindly note that this file is only for use with PowerPoint software and will not work using Google Slides. Unfortunately, Google slides do not support timed transition of slides.

The slides are timed and change every minute. You can also click to change the slides. This PPT should keep your students actively engaged for at least 15 minutes, giving you some well deserved free time.

How to use:

Photocopy the answer sheet and hand out to each student

Check that each student has the correct color pencils or crayons (red, yellow, green, brown, orange and blue).

Start the PPT show in slidehow mode (full screen).

Click through and explain up to slide 4.

The PPT will run automatically from slide 5 (START slide) for 15 minutes.

In this no-prep activity, students will unknowingly choose classmates to win silly “most likely to…” awards as they practice their algebra skills! Students will write the names of 12 classmates as their nominees in the spaces provided, and then eliminate them one by one as they simplify polynomial expressions with addition or subtraction. The last classmate remaining wins the award! The students will complete the small award certificate, color/decorate if it time allows, and then present it to the winner.

This activity builds a positive learning environment by using peer interactions as students practice their algebra skills. This activity is perfect for end-of-year skills practice, beginning of the year review, concept review, or enrichment/reinforcement. For extra fun, you can hold an “awards ceremony” at the end of class so that students can present the winners to their classmates! You can display the awards on your bulletin board, or the students can keep them in their notebooks or decorate their lockers with them. This is sure to be a fun and motivating way to get your students to practice math without realizing they are doing it!

Get ready for back to school with this Free Daily Writing Prompts with five prompts for September. These engaging quick write prompts are inspired by the national calendar of days to help students practice writing every day. It’s perfect for grades 3, 4, and 5 and for substitute days!

This is one week of writing prompts and can be used for a week of writing lessons. It’s part of my full month of September Daily Writing Prompts.

The writing prompts for September cover:

These five September writing pages are ready for you with suggested website links. As the teacher you manage the links. They are not necessary, but you can use them to build background knowledge. A self-editing toolkit is included so students can learn to self-edit and peer-edit. This writing journal is a great way to integrate writing into lifelong learning habits.

How does the self-editing toolkit work?

The digital version of this workbook includes a self-editing toolkit. Students use to drag and drop highlighter bars across their work. The highlighters help them find and correct their errors.

These three FREE fun creative writing story activities have prompted some of the most happy, imaginative fiction lessons I have ever had with my students! Each story takes about 20- 25 minutes to write; the sharing time afterwards will vary according to class size. Each of the activities will provoke both the imagination AND critical thinking. The “show, not tell” activity reinforces that all important characteristic of successful narrative that eludes so many writers.

The first activity is in the form of a printable for students, whereas the other two need to be related to them orally to maintain their intriguing secrets.
