Reader’s theater is a proven effective way to increase vocabulary, reading fluency and give students an authentic reason to read and reread material which boosts comprehension. This lesson plan accompanies the script First Ladies Day in Court and covers not only history, civics and economics standards but ties in with language arts.

Lesson plan includes goals, objectives, standards addressed, materials needed, introduction, activities, conclusion, a list of resources including internet resources, extensions and assessment.

I have never failed to be amazed at the amount of new information I learn from these sheets – it’s always interesting to compare the child’s sheet, with their parents and also their previous teacher’s reports. This pack contains:

• STUDENT SHEET (1 page) with sections to complete about their family, pets, favorite foods, games and sports; how confident they feel about different subject areas; what they like to do when they’re not at school + things they find tricky at school.

• CAREGIVER SHEET (2 pages) with sections to complete about their child’s strengths and weaknesses; skills they have that could be utilized within the classroom; any cultural or religious beliefs the teacher should be aware of; languages spoken at home; passions and talents their child has outside of school; health issues + more.

Free Easy Student Product Activity Page for Open House

Looking for some great student products for your Open House display?

I’ve got a great math-related activity to share with you! This activity is one that I have used to create a cover page in students’ math notebooks, but it’s such a fun activity that it makes for a great display for Open House or Back to School Night. It’s also a fun way to show students how they can communicate with numbers and an opportunity for students to get creative and show off their individual style.

I give students a guideline for how to format the page and a list of statements to get them started (see below), but the creativity level is left entirely to them.
As an optional way to present the numbers, you can have students write them in one of the following formats:
* expanded notation- (Example: 10,000 x 1 + 1,000 x 3 + 100 x 5 + 10 x 6 + 1 x 8 days on Earth.)
* expanded form- (Example: I traveled 1000 + 200 + 70 + 8 miles to the beach this summer.)
* mathematical expressions- (Example: My birthday is on the (75 + 30)th day of the year.)

Give your students birthday, moving away, or you are special cards from the class. The birthday cards are a way to make a child feel special. For students moving away, this will give your remaining students closure with the student leaving. It will help the student that is leaving feel special. Use the you are special cards for Kindness Week. There are colored and black & white copies. I give this out usually for the morning bellwork or during a transition.

The way I use it…
Students enjoy this project! This is a 1-2 week project. As I scaffold and model the information to my students, I have students write in the due dates on the checklist. I make this an at-school project and have students keep their brochure in a designated location.

Lastly, there are additional resources such as the checklist, postcards, key word list, or graphic organizers that are available to meet student needs. The homepage and speech are optional activities that you can use with your students.

This checklist is a great way to stay organized on the first day of school!

I set out one checklist on every student’s desk on the first day of school. When students walk, instruct them to be seated and review this checklist with them.
