Classroom Rules Poster and Instructions

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Free Classroom Rules Poster and Instructions

It sounds very idealistic to say this, but it’s true. From personal experience, I assure you that simplifying your rules will simplify your life.

At the beginning of the school year, when it’s time to introduce the class rules I show students this poster and read the three words. Then, using the Socratic method of questioning I go through the rules one by one and discuss the implications of those rules (which is the reason you don’t need many.)

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Back to School Ice Breaker”

by Fourth Grade Frenzy

2nd – 5th Grade

Back to School Ice Breaker

This back to school ice breaker game will get your students up and moving on the first day of school. Students will mingle with classmates, ask questions, and get their new friends to sign off on their paper. Students try to finish by getting each classmate to sign only one box. That way students are encouraged to talk to as many classmates as possible. Once the class is finished, begin sharing some information about each student. You might want to begin the discussion with a question like, “Who can tell me something about Brianna?” Continue until all students have been named. The students love it when their teacher joins the game!

Text Clue Scavenger Hunt Task Cards

As a teacher librarian I am alway looking for ways to support classroom teachers with their ELA programming. I designed this set with the library in mind, since that is where I work. You can easily use this in your classroom. The purpose of this scavenger hunt is to familiarize/support students in using text clues to determine the subject of a book.

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 10.14.13 PM

This pack includes 24 scavenger hunt cards and a printable answer sheet allowing students to record up to twelve answers.

This is a print and go resource that can easily be used to help you gather data on your students and their ability to use text clues, before, during or after teaching. The cards can easily be adapted to use more one on one with struggling students, simply place several books in front of them and ask them to identify the book being described on the task card. If the student struggles with the text clue and chooses the wrong one, asking them why, will give you a bunch of information that you can use in helping that student better use text clues offered on covers, in pictures or in words.

At $2, this is a must have, easy to use resource!

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Back To School Parent’s Guide for 1st – 5th Grade”

by The Teacher Next Door

Pre-Kindergarten – 5th Grade

Back To School Parent's Guide for 1st - 5th Grade

This Parent’s Guide is a great tool to give to parents at Back To School Night. It organizes important classroom information and serves as a handy reference guide. I love it because it also serves as a talking point tool for my Back To School speech.

This Parent Guide is a Word Document, so you’re able to customize it to fit your own classroom’s needs. The five page handout can then be copied back to back and folded to create a mini-booklet for your student’s parents.

The copying of the book can be a little tricky, so here’s how I do it:

To make the booklet, run the cover by itself. The next two pages are back to back: Getting to Know Miss Larson with Communication and also back to back are 5th Grade Curriculum with Grading, Daily Work and Homework.

When you do it this way, the pages will be in order: Cover, Getting to Know _______, Communication, 5th Grade Curriculum, Grading, Discipline, Birthdays, Misc. Notes, Larsonease and the back cover (important numbers). Hope this helps!

If you could take the time to give some feedback for this freebie, I would truly appreciate it!

Thanks!
Jenn

Starting a Reading Buddies program in your classroom? Some tips and a freebie!

Starting a #ReadingBuddies program in your classroom- Some tips and a freebie to get you started!

Thinking about starting a Reading Buddies program in your classroom this year? Here are some tips and tools to get things rolling!

Consider putting School-wide Reading Buddies on a staff meeting agenda.

Discuss the benefits for all students with your divisional leads and administration, and even if the seed of the idea is planted to be reassessed next year, it will give you a sense of who might be open to a pairing for this year.

Take age into consideration.

An age / grade difference of 2-3 years between buddies puts a clear boundary between who the big buddies and little buddies are.

Approach a colleague about pairing classes…

…and be realistic about whether your schedules will work! Casual conversation over lunch can often accomplish this, but it seems like our time is less our own these days! I have created this free letter and form to simplify the process:

Reading Buddies teacher letter free

Build Reading Buddy time into your timetable.

When ‘it’s official’ everyone knows what to expect, when. Perhaps it is alternate week familiar reading, word-work, or math skills review through games, part of character education or religious education for forty minutes. While  may Reading Buddies may not appear in on the timetable your principal has to hand in to the school board, it’s important that the kids have this special time to look forward to. It could even happen over lunch!

Define expectations to both classes.

This is accomplished best if done as individual classes, as the expectations differ for the age groups in some ways. Review general expectations when they are brought together for the first few times, and provide visual reminders. Reading Buddies time can quickly look like recess if sixty kids are unsure of what the rules are, half the kids, ‘read the book already’ and have decided to hang out with someone else!

Talk to your partner class’ teacher about general and specific expectations.

I wrote general expectations in a storybook lesson format for my students, explaining to the bigger buddies (third graders) ‘This is what I am reading to your little buddies‘ (kindergarters). One of my valued TpT customers reads her class the story, then posts the pages on a bulletin board! I love that!

Here are some ideas for general expectations from my Reading Buddies Starter pack:

Student expectations defined in That Fun Reading Teacher's Reading Buddies Starter Pack

What are some expectations that you find important to put in place during Reading Buddies time?

Best wishes to all you!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Greek and Latin Roots Lesson Plan Free Download”

by The Illustrated Classroom

3rd – 8th Grade

Greek and Latin Roots Lesson Plan

This Greek and Latin roots lesson combines the enjoyment of art and creativity with the rigor of vocabulary development. It is basically a mnemonic activity, designed to help students commit the meanings of the Greek and Latin stems to memory.

I made this lesson for a summer school English class made up of students with reading levels ranging from 4th to 9th grades. Classes were two hours per day. I gave them five class periods to finish. I gave extra credit for coloring. The more time they spend on the imagery, the more they are absorbing the meaning of the root.

I can’t over-state how much success I have had with this lesson. It’s ideal for visual learners but fun for everyone (and easy to grade, too!) It keeps the kids interacting with roots and stems over long periods of time. It forces them to synthesize the roots and apply their knowledge in an original way, a personal way that has meaning for them. The best part is, it is simple and doesn’t require a lot of complex input or instructions from the teacher. Just show them an example, give them the materials and the list of roots and away they go.

Research shows that vocabulary development through the mastery of Greek and Latin roots and stems is a key component to improving test scores on standardized tests such as the GRE, SAT, CST, AP exams and State standardized tests.

This is a stand-alone, free product. You don’t have to buy any of my other products to make this lesson work. If you are interested in increasing the depth, breadth, and time you students spend learning Greek and Latin roots, check out some of my companion products that complement this lesson.

Common Core Aligned
Greek and Latin roots, suffixes, and prefixes, sometimes called word stems or word forms, are part of the Common Core Standards from third grade to tenth grade.

Why is it important?
Greek roots are word parts that have meaning. They are the building blocks of thousands of English words. Chronology, polygon, bicycle, telescope, astrophysics, hyperventilate — the list goes on an on — all these words contain one or two Greek roots.

Knowledge of word roots and their meaning is important and useful for our students because it gives them the ability to decode the meaning of unfamiliar words in a variety of situations.
