Math IS Real Life is a monthly blog link-up hosted by a math loving dork! The purpose of #MIRL is to bring examples of how I (and others who link up) have used math in OUR real lives in the last month. The hosted link-up is the first Wednesday of each month and often have other friends and math bloggers join in the fun!

This freebie includes a real life snow-removal scenario in which students will calculate the area of a driveway and the volume of the snow removed in the month of December 2013 based on actual snow fall. A bonus question has been added to include a more complex calculation. In addition to the bonus question, the teacher also has the option to have the student calculate the problem in inches (easier, whole number calculations) or feet (more complex, decimal or fraction calculations). A collection of 5 proverbs that are to be cut out (each set has 5 proverbs separates by double spaced spaces). I print them, make copies, cut each proverb in half and then place them in a plastic bag for students to work in partners to put them together. I then display the correct order on a transparency, ELMO projector, or write them on the board.
This lesson is student-centered, meaning:

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.
Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.
I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flipbook when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

Vision boards can help students think about the future in a positive way, reflecting and setting goals as they consider who they want to be and how to get there.
In this reflective project, students consider the possibility of this pandemic as a pivot point in their lives from which they can take what they’ve learned about themselves and their dreams during this time at home and move forward courageously.
You can either send out the student instructions by PDF and let students craft vision boards off screen at home, or use the Google Drive version with editable elements and let students choose to work on or offline. In Drive, they can create their vision boards by typing and dragging and dropping their imagery. Either option can lead to inspiring and beautiful vision boards.

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.
Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.
I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flipbook when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.
I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

104 Calendar pieces for your November pocket chart. Size of daily pieces are 2.5 x 3 inches and will fit standard Calendar pocket charts.
There are 2 sets of calendar pieces included to use in any pattern you’d like to create. On our daily Calendar page, my students draw the corresponding pictures along with the date. I give them brown and red crayons to use and by the end of the month, their calendar looks great!
I have also included medallions for holidays and special days. You can tape the medallion to the upper left or lower right corner of the calendar piece. When the month is done, store them with the other pieces so that next year you can change the dates when you re-use them.
Also, there are extra clipart pieces to make a master pattern for your students to follow.
