Sentences – Grammar Circles for easy and effective grammar

Product Description
Teach grammar in a creative and meaningful way. No more boring grammar. grammar

Simplify your life and make grammar fun and effective.

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit in grammar with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages, and then we would correct them together. It was tedious, and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and learn grammar. Although this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, directions, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (16 pages)
Activities included focus on:
-the logistics of the sentence (the basic parts)
-the prepositional phrase
-the adjective phrase
-the adverb phrase
-the verbal phrase
-the appositive phrase
-the independent and subordinate clauses
-subjects and predicates
-fragments
-run-on sentences
-types of sentences

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their work and learn from one another.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to about sentences.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Analyzing Fiction Activity: Tell Me a Story”

by Connie

6th – 12th Grade

This FREE activity enables Middle School and High School students to develop both their analytic and creative skills.

First, the students review a list of 12 qualities of Strong Fiction and analyze their personal examples for each of the various criteria. For an activity that focuses on this aspect of writing, check out
Writing: Critique Group Exit Slip

Next, they write examples of Specific Characters, General Objects, Specific Objects, Adjectives, Abstract Nouns and Setting on 3′ x5′ pieces of construction paper color-coded to match the topics.

Finally, they select the basic bones of their story from the cards the class made in the prior segment of this activity and then they write either an individual story or a collaborative piece in groups of three. Whichever writing idea teachers don’t select can be used for another lesson at a later date. This idea will jump-start their thinking Writing: Start Strong!

This Common Core and Bloom’s Taxonomy aligned activity offers students a chance to analyze fiction for specific criteria, and to exhibit how they can combine these criteria with the elements of literature to create a durable story that SHOWS instead of TELLS.

Using a class-created Strong Fiction criteria list, students analyze writing for the qualities they chose as the most important, and then they create their own stories. Students love to tell stories. Let them do this in writing where they can combine their creative ideas with their growing writing and thinking skills.

Get more details about this idea on my blog:http://teachitwrite.blogspot.com/2013/06/tell-me-story.html

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Je travaille mon vocabulaire: La salle de classe {French Vocabulary Practice}”

by Ms Joanne

1st – 10th Grade

Help your beginning French language students develop their vocabulary by playing a matching game, illustrating simple sentences, reading the words in context and making up silly sentences. Use the included illustrated word wall to introduce the new target vocabulary and as a reference tool for students. This resource was developed for Grade 1 French Immersion students but could be used effectively with most beginning French classes. {La description en français se trouve ci-dessous, suivant l’anglais}

This set practices 18 words. Using the materials in this packet, students can practice the target vocabulary in numerous ways:
Play an active matching game that lets them walk around the classroom. Students look for their matching card by asking and answering questions in French using the target vocabulary. Detailed instructions are included.
• Use the matching game cards for a “concentration” game in small groups.
Read sentences using the target vocabulary in context, with an image to use as a picture clue.
• Laminate the 2 pages of context sentences and use them in a reading centre, either for individual reading or in pairs.
• Cut the images from the context sentences and have the students match them up again correctly.
• Similarly teachers can separate the images from the word wall and have the students match them up again.
Illustrate simple sentences that use the target vocabulary in context.
• Have students orally invent sentences using the target vocabulary and record them on an i-pad or other recording device. If no recording device is available students can take turns in small groups making sentences that use the target vocabulary. Silly sentences, provided they are grammatically correct, are encouraged and can be modeled ahead of time by the teacher.
• Students can listen to the recorded sentences and write down their favorites.
• A copy of the illustrated word wall can be kept by each student to be used as a reference in writing and reading activities as the year continues.

This is a FREE sample from a series of vocabulary practice sets. Other vocabulary practice sets you may be interested in:

Thesis Writing Poster

Product Description

As any English teacher can tell you, the thesis statement is the most important part of the essay. It defines the arguments and orients the reader. Unfortunately, many students have difficulty with the thesis statement. This is why I have created the “7 Steps to Writing an Effective Thesis Statement” poster.

The poster is a step by step guide on how to write the thesis starting with selecting a topic the student understands and walks them through the process until the end.

I am making the poster available in different formats for facility of use in the classroom:

– The first format measures 70 cm (27.6 inches) (easy printing) PDF
– The second format measure 97 cm (38.2) – information can be more easily read from further away (easy printing) PDF
– One smaller poster PDF
– An image format JPEG

Hamlet Scene Summary Visual Notebook

Product Description
This resource has been created as a substitute for the traditional “questions and answers” method we are used to. As teachers, our goal is to make sure students understand the important elements from the play, but we also want to engage them in a “hands-on” fashion.

Studies demonstrate that Sketch noting and doodling help students retain information and understand concepts better than simply answering questions.

This resource allows students to complete notes during the reading process and use the images and heading provided to help them know what the focus should be on.

This is also an excellent study and review tool.

Included in this resources is:

-a note taking page for every scene in the play
-a note taking page for every soliloquy in the play
-a comprehensive answer key for all scenes and soliloquies
