FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Character Valentines: Fun for ELA 5-9”

by Spark Creativity

5th – 9th Grade

In this packet, you’ll find everything you need for a fun Valentine’s Day activity that works for any novel. Students will design and deliver valentines from one character to all the rest, then use their favorites to create a lovely display.

General Summary:
Divide students into groups and assign each group a character from the novel. Then give each group a mailbox handout, a box or bag or envelope (to use as a mailbox), a scissors, and the valentines. Each group will create a valentine for every other character from the perspective of their character and then deliver them into the mailboxes. Each group will read the valentines their character received and choose the two they think best reflect the characters’ relationship to share with the class and then hang up on the display.

What’s inside:

Mailbox Cover: Give each group a mailbox cover and have them fill it in with their character’s name. Then let them tape or staple it to the box, bag, or envelope they are using for a mailbox.

Example: You can print this out to show everyone before the activity if you wish. Stress that they are supposed to try to show their understanding of the characters in the novel through what they write on the valentines.

Valentines: There are eight blank valentines for each group. Have students fill in enough for however many characters you are using for the activity. Let students know that not all Valentine’s Day messages will be about love. Plenty of people send valentines to friends or relatives, or even, as in the example, people they don’t like.

Banner Letters: Print out these banner letters to spell “BE MINE”, cut them out, and hang them up on a patch of wall or a bulletin board. Then as each group shares their top two Valentines with the whole class, invite them to hang the pieces up under the banner for a great classroom display.

Parts of Speech Grammar Circles (Superhero Themed)

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Superhero themed Parts of speech Grammar Circle Unit

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit grammar in with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages and then we would correct them together. It was tedious and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and Learn grammar. Although, this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do other than to facilitate and supervise.

Once these circles have been implimented and students know who their group members are and what they are supposed to do, it is a great prep to leave a supply teacher.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (27 pages)

Activities included focus on:

-nouns
-adjectives
-verbs
-adverbs
-prepositions
-conjunctions
-putting in all together
-correct use of pronouns
-who and whom
-that and which
-who’s and whose
-that and who
-pronoun case
-pronoun agreement
-active and passive voice
-verb tenses (present, past, future)
-verb uses (consistency in verb tenses)

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their own work and learn from one another.

Also included are free Superhero Themed Parts of Speech Posters to decorate your class.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to learn parts of speech.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “RIP Said (Said is Dead) Synonyms Booklet”

by Cinnamon’s Classroom

Kindergarten – 12th Grade

Need an engaging way to get your students to replace the overused word ‘said’ (often referred to as a tired/boring/dead word).
This free sample of my Boring Words Interactive Notebook and Synonym Booklets Bundle is a FUN way to get students to expand their vocabulary and improve their writing. This free sample includes:
♦ foldable booklet with numerous synonyms for said
♦ “RIP SAID” tombstone
♦ Instructions on how to create a 3D tombstone
♦ Instructions on how to create a mini foldable book
♦ The synonyms within the book are grouped together based on meaning; and the words are illustrated to show this.
♦ The splash of color in each image helps students zero in on the part of the picture that highlights context.
♦ The illustrations not only serve to show students the meaning of a word, they serve to entertain and engage learners as well.

The paid version of this resource includes:
♦ 700 descriptive words
♦ a “RIP Dead Words” bulletin board decor pack
♦ 20+ mini picture thesauruses that come in 3 print options (foldables, small cards, large cards)
♦ an interactive notebook!

Take a closer look at the complete set HERE

The story behind picture thesauruses

I created my picture thesauruses as a way to solve a problem I was having in my classroom. I wanted my students to be more descriptive in their writing, but the traditional resource used for finding better words – a thesaurus – was just not working! Students would arbitrarily select a word from the long list provided, and often, the word selected was used incorrectly (ie. not in the right context).

I began to wonder… how could I show my class that each word in a thesaurus has a slightly different meaning? If only there were visuals to help students SEE the subtle differences between synonyms, I thought.

So I began working on solving these problems… and presto, my mini “picture thesauruses” (yep, that’s a term I made up) were born. Kid friendly! Fun! Interactive! Engaging! Easy to use!!!

How the books are organized and why:

My bundle of mini books (in the complete set) is based on THE 5 SENSES + EMOTIONS because I find that when students describe the look, smell, taste, sound or feel of an object, it just catapults their writing to a whole new level. Using precise vocabulary to describe emotions helps students add some ‘voice’ to their writing! If you want your students to expand their vocabulary, you can download the complete set HERE.
