Rachel’s Monster

By Gini Musmanno of Reading Spotlight

The first time I saw Rachel she was standing in the hall near her first-grade classroom door. Her eyes met mine, but she then turned her face to the wall. I did not know at that time she would become one of my first primary grade remedial reading students, nor did I know that she was repeating first grade–this is a story about Rachel’s monster.

“BOO” to Fractions? Recognizing Equivalent Fractions

By Vicky Rauch of Scipi

Math requires constant practice – something most of my students dread doing. I can find many “drill and kill” activities, but they tend to do just that, drill those who don’t need it and kill those who already know how to do it. So to drill and “thrill”, I created fractional word puzzles. The one for October is Halloween Fraction Riddles.

Cursive vs. Keyboard – an interesting debate

By Renee Heiss of All-American Teacher Tools

There have been many debates over the centuries regarding the education of our children. From integrated schools to No Child Left Behind and Common Core curricula, teachers have had to deal with a plethora of revisions to their daily lessons. However, hidden beneath the mandated revisions is a new discussion that centers around cursive writing vs. keyboard entry for student assignments. How can you teach your little learners to master a keyboard?

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Horn of Plenty Shape Writing Thanksgiving”

by Margo Gentile
2nd – 5th Grade

Don’t you love those word-themed shapes? Here’s a way you can have your students make one without having to try a capricious app.

There are 2 versions of the cornucopia in this product.

The first is for younger children. Have the students write what they are thankful for within the blank spaces of the cornucopia. They may also color the picture.

The second cornucopia is more suitable for older children or those that are pretty adept at printing. The cornucopia on this page is outlined in very light gray. Have students use these as writing lines to record what they are thankful for. The final result will be a word-picture.

Hope you enjoy this freebie. Happy Thanksgiving!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Halloween Activities for Kindergarten CVC Words”

by Teacher Tam
Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

Halloween CVC Word Match FREEBIE! This eye-catching, Halloween-themed game focuses on 20 CVC words, including 4 words for each medial vowel. I revised the product to include blank cards, too! It is appropriate for use in preschool through first grade. The words are presented in a matching game format to make it easy for younger students. Recording sheets in color and black-and-white are also included. The game can be used for small group reading instruction, as practice for pairs of students, or sent as homework.

This product addresses the following Common Core* Language Arts Standards for Kindergarten and First Grade:

RF.K.2. Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). Recognize and produce rhyming words. Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words. Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words. Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.1 (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.) Add or substitute individual sounds (phonemes) in simple, one-syllable words to make new words.

RF.K.3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. Demonstrate basic knowledge of letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or most frequent sound for each consonant. Associate the long and short sounds with the common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels. Distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ.

L.K.2. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Spell simple words phonetically, drawing on knowledge of sound-letter relationships.

RF.1.2. Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes), including consonant blends. Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.

RF.1.3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

If you like this freebie, please take a minute to “Like” it and “Pin” it! Thank you for your interest in my TPT store!

We’re so eager for summer, we sometimes forget about all the things we have to do for the last few weeks of school, one of which is celebrating a successful year with our students.  For those of you who didn’t have a great year, it’s time for you to rejoice, you never have to see this group of kids again, at least not in your classroom.
