FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Nature Themed Cootie Catcher! FREEBIE”

by Green Grubs

2nd – 5th Grade

A great introductory activity to a nature based or environmental topic…get silly with this Nature themed Fortune-Teller-Cootie-Catcher!

There are 8 challenges inside the Cootie Catcher (e.g. take nine steps backwards, drop to the ground and freeze until you see an insect! Can you name the insect? Name one thing you could do to help the environment – you can’t say pick up rubbish! Find 5 different types of leaves. Which tree or plant are they from?) This is also a good basic activity for teachers to use at the start of a topic to gauge children’s prior knowledge about general environmental matters— rove around and eavesdrop on their conversations before and during the challenge!

A blank template is also provided so your class can then go on to share their learning by creating their own nature themed cootie catcher…

This activity is also included as part of the following resource – check it out for more in depth learning around this subject!:

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Ocean Animals Short Reads (Free Sampler)”

by Growing Smart Readers

3rd – 4th Grade

Read about the Angler Fish, the Clownfish, and the Mimic Octopus! This resource includes informational paragraphs and follow-up questions for vocabulary and sentence writing.

This 3 page sampler contains short factual paragraphs; quick reads… so kids can glean the main facts and key ideas about each animal.

I created these for some of my students who get too stressed when they see long passages. Having less complex text makes it easier for them to read and feel successful.

Use them for independent work, center work, or as a supplement to a unit study on the ocean or ocean animals. These are especially great for summer school or after school mini lessons.

ELA Common Core Standards are listed for second and third grade level expectations.

Consider the priced version if your students were successful with this sampler.

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Science Lab Inventory Form”

by Amy Brown Science

3rd – 12th Grade

Science Lab Inventory Form

An organized teacher is a happy teacher! If you are required to turn in a lab inventory each year, this simple form will help you get organized and stay organized.

At my school, we are required to turn in a lab inventory at the end of each and every year. The first year I had to do this, I was a bit overwhelmed by the task. My lab is fairly well equipped, and it took a long time for me to list each item.

Now, several years later, this is a simple and easy task. I keep my lab inventory list in a convenient location in my lab. As the year progresses, I remove consumable items that have been used up, or items that have been broken. When I purchase new supplies, I simply add them to the list as the new items arrive.

This form is just one page of over 100 pages that are included in my “Ultimate Science Teacher Binder of Forms, Organizers and Calendars” which can be viewed by clicking this link.

The lab inventory form is completely editable. You can print out copies and write on them, or you can type directly into the form on your computer.

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Aardvarks Clip Art and Reading Pack”

by J MASON EMERSON

Pre-Kindergarten – 12th Grade

Aardvarks Clip Art And Reading Pack has 32 public domain images of aardvarks. There are color photos and black and white drawings. Insofar as instructions or suggestions go, you can enlarge or shrink the public domain images’ sizes, move the images around, etc. The images are handy for any classroom (Pre-K through higher ed) and any age or ability level but teachers of art and natural studies in science will likely regard them as being of special interest. Teachers of Pre-K students up will find them handy for using as reward stickers, for classroom décor, etc.

Sources for the aardvark public domain clip art here and in other similar publications include wpclipart.com, clker.com, wikipedia.org, plates from the 1800s works of John Gould, John James Audubon, various federal government agencies, and a few from myself. To summarize:

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Bugs and Critters! Be an Entomologist”

by Growing Smart Readers

Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

GRAB A MAGNIFYING LENS and GO!

This is a revised freebie!

This “Critter Craze” resource gives your kids a chance to get out of the classroom and be an entomologist. They may find all kinds of bugs, not just insects…but even spiders. Be sure to tell them that entomologists study insects as well as other bugs. While insects do have 6 legs, they may find a spider to write about.

The “jar” graphic allows them the opportunity to draw their many-legged critter. Follow up with a mini research for more information about their new-found specimen.

2 report frames (differentiated) are included.

I hope your kids have a great time with this Critter Craze activity, and perhaps it will be a great jumpstart for writing an insect report.

Have fun with this, but remind students to RELEASE THEIR BUGS back into the wild after studying them.

If you like this lesson activity, and your kids had fun finding an insect and writing about it, you may want to check out: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Animal-Report-Writing-to-Inform-Templates
