FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Natural Disaster QR Vocabulary Sort”

by Texas Science Gal

5th – 8th Grade

natural-disaster-qr-vocabulary-sort

In this download there are 5 different natural disaster vocabulary words and QR codes. This download focuses on the natural disasters that have strong impacts on the ecosystems including tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanoes.

To use this, simply print these out for a group of 2-4 and have students sort out all of the cards. Once students have sorted the codes, you can give them the guided questions to help with comprehension. This helps assess what they have learned and put it into writing. There is also an answer key provided. I find that it makes a great way to integrate technology, get students hands on, and to reinforce the content knowledge.

Grades Kindergarten -4th Grade

Be inspired by Halloween!

thumbnail_fullsizerender-jpg-3

I have packed several different types of activities in this package. Lots of fun and engaging math problems, biomimicry, and creative writing prompts.

1. Spot bats, toadstools, and treats.

Fun activities where the children are asked to make up their own math problems. Children often enjoy creating their own problems. This approach requires a deeper reflection upon numbers and basic arithmetic operations as compared to only providing an answer.

Halloween inspired multiplication and division cards. Students can make their own problems. Color and black and white versions.

2. Invent a toy inspired by jumping spiders.

Enter the fascinating world of spooky animals and tasty vegetables – from spiders to aye-aye with a witch-like long bony middle finger. Use the observations to design toys and solve problems.

Lessons about biomimicry require a brave approach to teaching since there is a move away from an approach where teachers are asking questions and looking for quick answers. Instead, young learners are given an opportunity to shape and explore their own ideas. Biomimicry and bioinspiration are constantly evolving and new ideas are explored to solve problems and designing innovations.

3. 16 writing prompts

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Earth & Space Science + Scientific Process Classroom Clash Game – like Jeopardy”

by The Science Vault

5th – 9th Grade

Earth & Space Science

This is a powerpoint game similar to Jeopardy (TM). The six topics covered are: Scientific Method, Scientific Measurement, SI Units, The Earth, Earth Processes, and Space. Each topic has six questions arranged like Jeopardy: generally, the more money the question is worth, the harder the question. Great as a review or a back-to-school launch in an Earth Science class to get an idea about what your students already know. Jeopardy games are a great way to do something fun and challenging – I like to use them as a formative assessment in the beginning of a unit (or, in this case, a course), as a review, or even the last 20 minutes of class on a Friday 🙂

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Free Soil Lab”

by The Science Penguin

3rd – 5th Grade

Free Soil Lab

This soil freebie will help you and your students observe soil samples and test their capacity to retain water.

It contains recommendations and student recording pages.

Directions:
Set up 4 stations for students to record data. Include a different soil sample at each station. I like using gravel, sand, potting soil or loam, and clay. Each station should have a small container of the soil particles (like a petri dish), a graduated cylinder, funnel, and coffee filter.

Go over the question and write a hypothesis.

As a class, put 40 mL of water in each funnel containing a coffee filter and funnel with the particles inside. Allow time for the water to pass through the coffee filter and into the graduated cylinder.

Then, have students visit the stations to record their observations. Create a chart and graph of the data, draw conclusions, and answer the question.

April is Poetry Month

I just love teaching poetry and spring is the perfect time. For me, inspiration comes from being outside, perhaps walking on the beach inhaling the salty ocean air, or just walking through the woods with my husband and beautiful husky who is no longer with us. Oh and April is Poetry month.

Don’t Let the Pencil Craze Get to You!

Mary Moore of Moore Resources

Are pencils driving you crazy? Students not having a pencil? Losing them? Breaking the tip? The pencil craze got to me too! It doesn’t need to! During my student teaching we had cups with pencils at each group that we sharpened every morning and ensured there were plenty in each cup, which was great! That was in first grade. Over the years, I became use to about 2-3 students per class not having a pencil, therefore, I always purchased a box or two at a time and handed pencils out to those students. This year was a little different for me and the pencil craze got me! So many lost pencils, broken pencil tips, or students just didn’t have a pencil. I felt pencil cross eyed! A solution must be found!!! After much thought I came up with my “Pencil Station”!

SCIENCE LESSON – Plant Bundle

By:  The Owl Teacher

Grades 2-5

I love to teach science.  There is something about all the hands-on, exploring activities that just gets me excited.  Our kids are no different.  So when it comes to plants, the thought was – “how can I make this hands on, besides just planting a plant!”

Plantbundle8x8smallertwo

With much thought, I was able to create my plant unit with lots of engaging and hands-on activities for students as they explore the life cycle of a plant, the characteristics of plants, their structures and functions, and much more!  We even discuss photosynthesis a bit.

In my plant bundle you will find my complete plant unit, plant task cards, my plant craftivity (where students create a plant in a pot with the various parts of a plant written on leaves.  They then define the characteristics of each part.) and my causation cards.  If you aren’t familiar with causation cards, you can read about them (and download a freebie to check them out) here.

You can get all four of these products in one place for a much cheaper price!  To check it out, head here to my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

Happy Teaching!

Be a Snowflake Detective: Sparkling Crystal Fun & Facts

By: Sparking Children’s Thinkibility

Grades Kindergarten-4th Science, Geometry, Winter

All a snowflake detective need is snow, a magnifier glass and patience. As with all beauty, part of the allure is mystery. And snowflakes are beautiful.

Understanding snowflakes is not as simple as it might sound. But one thing is certain, namely that inner working of the way ice crystals grow in the clouds is a process that is still a bit of a puzzle to scientists.

A snowflake begins life as a dust particle in a cloud. If it is cold, water vapor condense on the dust and crystals are formed. The crystals grow and grow and eventually they become too heavy and large and a snowflake falls out of the cloud.
