FREE MATH LESSON – “5.OA.1 Order of Operations Notes”

by Ciano’s Classroom Creations

5th Grade

Order of Operations Notes

‘ve noticed over the years that students tend to have a difficult time keeping detailed, organized notes for math. It was alarming more so this year with the group that I had. We, as teachers, know how important an organized notebook is, even more so now that we have Common Core. I also noticed my students spent so much class time copying the steps to solve each problem and realized that I needed to do something to remedy this so that they would have more time to practice the new problems/strategies I was teaching them.

That is when the thought of creating CCSS aligned notes for math came from.

This FREEBIE has student friendly notes and steps for solving 5.OA.1, order of operations. This 4 page document can be printed single or double sided and is a great resource for your students to place into their math notebooks or for you to keep a master binder of the CCSS strategies that your students can look back at as needed.

One license is intended for unlimited use for one classroom teacher. Please consider leaving feedback as well. Click the GREEN STAR to begin following my store! Please consider following Ciano’s Classroom Creations Facebook Page. Thank you again for your purchase, may this product be just what you were looking for! 🙂

Easter phrasing, fluency and fun (and a freebie for everyone!)

Easter Rhythm and Rhyme

It was almost Easter, and I found myself fighting off the urge to nod off while my students were reading some of the most entertaining leveled books schools can buy. My primary readers were in a slump. I heard it their robotic, monotone reading. Things needed shaking up with phrasing and pacing with a number of my early readers. I ran the risk of my head falling to my chest and a potential neck injury.

It was time for another Phrasing and Fluency Blitz!

When I taught Reading Recovery, there were times that a student would plateau at a a level for more than a week. We would be advised to take two or three lessons for a phrasing and fluency blitz – rereading some familiar, easier books to rebuild confidence, model and practice phrasing and pick up the pace! Many of our students’ favorites were readers that rhymed, had a lively rhythm and made us both laugh!

I used the freebie The Bunny Hop Easter Song and Movement Activity in Kindergarten poetry books as a music and movement activity. It works particularly well if modeled and echoed first before showing earliest readers the text:

This freebie also has a black and white version included with it – ideal for poetry folders!

It’s all about the Eggs is an Easter Fun Fluency Reader  modeled after I’m All About the Bass (performed by Meghan Trainor, co-written by Meghan Trainor and Kevin Kadish). I’m All About the Bass had been on the radio so much last year that my students knew the tune instantly. I modeled the first read to them, and we practiced a few phrases in isolation before we all enjoyed singing it fluently from beginning to end (over, and over and over again.)

There is a twist on a familiar Fairy Tale in this book that the kids find hilarious (but humor and laughter are topics for other days…).

Limitation of liability: It’s all about the Eggs is not recommended for those who are prone to getting songs stuck in their head or with one last nerve.

Happy Easter everyone!

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Monsters Vs Robots, Maths and Literacy Fun Freebie”

by Big Idea Learning

Pre-Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

monsters v robots

This is a 3-page sample of the Monsters vs Robots Mathematics and Literacy Fun Unitthat I have just released. The 3 pages are: numbers 1-5, adding numbers and nouns.

Mathematics and Literacy – fun and relevant? You bet, and hopefully this helps. This gorgeous unit of work covers many areas across the CCSS and Australian National Curriculum through 40 high-interest, engaging activity pages.

I trust you are able to make great use of it in your class or home. This unit is designed to look great in both color and grayscale. Some people are able to print in color, or have access to projectors or smartboards – so I wanted to provide for them. Yet, I’m very aware of printing constraints and I’m confident you will be happy with how it looks printed in grayscale if you can’t justify the color version. This unit could be used like a booklet or you could print and use whichever lessons you need. I was also careful to use non-specific UK/US spelling.

The unit is available for purchase now. It has 40 pages of high-interest activities and worksheets. In the meantime – enjoy the sample!
Please feel free to ask any questions and leave feedback on the product page!
cheers,

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Reward Cards”

by Teacher Trap

Kindergarten – 6th Grade

reward cards

Reward Cards for Positive Behavior Classroom Management! Celebrate and reward great behavior with these handy reward cards! Students choose from nine special privileges such as bringing a stuffed animal to school or wearing a hat. An inexpensive alternative to the treasure box!

Who is This For?
Teachers looking for an inexpensive and fun way to reward good choices and focus on positive behaviors!

What is Included?
A printable page of nine reward cards. The cards work with any positive behavior models such as PBIS and can easily be used with any classroom management system.

I copy these onto colorful paper, chop them up and keep them in a handy spot in the classroom. When I see a student working hard, showing kindness, or making other good choices, I let them choose a card! My rule is that students must present the card before the bell rings in the morning on the day they want to redeem it.

Why Buy?
The classroom rewards cards help motivate students and provide an easy (and free) way to acknowledge good choices.

Thanks so much! I hope you found just what you needed!🙂

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Hamlet Act 1 Analysis Questions and Answers”

by Adam Horowitz

12th Grade

hamlet act 1 analysis

These are questions (and answers) that I’ve designed to help students get the most out of a close reading of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
These were designed with an AP Literature class in mind, but certainly other level courses could benefit from challenging materials. I have been teaching AP Lit for 9 years, have a Masters in Creative Writing, and have had a very successful open enrollment literature program that has been exceeding the national passing rate average (with 50 or more students passing per term). The page numbers correspond to the McDougal Littel Hamlet hardcover, but they are organized by Act and Scene so any copy of Hamlet can still be used to answer the questions.

FREE MISC. LESSON – “SAMPLE Blank Board Games: Spring (File Folder Games)”

by Jen Strange

Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

blank board games

HEY GUYS! LOOK! It’s a free sample for my awesome Blank Board Games.

So what is a Blank Board Game?

Here’s my theory on things.

You don’t need a completely new product every time you teach a new unit. What you need is something flexible, something you can tailor to your specific and current learning outcomes.

Designed for use as file-folder games, each set contains:
1. Well, obviously they come with a game board – two letter-sized images you print, trim, and attach to the inside of a file folder. Most games will come with a variation of game board colors, which will be indicated on the preview.

2. Multiple variations of printable cards for game play: some are completely blank, some have characters or images relating to the board, and some have game directions like “lose a turn.” There are also variations of border colors for cards, so you can easily differentiate sets if you create multiple games or levels for a game.

3. A printable front cover for your file folder if you want to label them like this – this is also great for leaving the top open and keeping an envelope of cards inside.

The Spring Blank Board Game set comes with:
a cover image
a game board
3 pages of blank playing cards (one is editable on the computer, while in the for-purchase sets, all the playing cards can be edited.)

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Tools of Good Readers (Reading Strategies)”

by Lori Smith

Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

tools of good readers

Based on Dr. Jean’s song, “The Tools of Good Readers,” This poster helps students to remember basic reading strategies:

1. Look at the pictures.
2. Sound out the letters.
3. Go back and read it again.
4. Do you see a smaller chunk that you can read?

The song is a rap that students will love, and can be found on Dr. Jean’s “Totally Reading” CD or for download at her site, http://www.drjean.org .

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Denotation and Connotation Activity”

by AlwaysLearning

4th – 7th Grade

denotate connotate

Understanding mood and tone is integral to gaining deeper meaning from text. The CCSS requires a realignment of a reading program as well as additional skills and strategies to better comprehend text. Understanding text at a deeper level requires readers to comprehend the connotation of words that an author uses to create mood and tone. This mini-lesson and activity defines the two and provides a large group of words for small groups or partners to sort into Neutral, Positive, or Negative groups. This activity can be done on chart paper or easily adapted to Interwrite boards. Please leave your feedback and let me know how it helped you in your classroom. FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Drawing Inferences Printable Bookmarks and Worksheet”

by Jen Bengel

3rd – 6th Grade

drawing inferences sheet

Enjoy this free resource for drawing inferences!

Since we can’t see or hear students’ thoughts as they are reading, it is difficult to assess their understanding of specific reading strategies. The activities in this resource offer a structured approach in teaching students how to make inferences while they are reading. They also offer teachers a glimpse into the thought process of students as they are reading and can serve as assessment tools.

There are printable bookmarks for students to write their understanding of making inferences while they are reading. There are also full page worksheets that can be used. These resources work great during independent reading time or center work. They can also be used in guided reading strategy groups.

The Common Core State Standards for grade 3 and beyond that Apply:

• RI.3.6. Distinguish their own point of view from that of the author of a text.
• RL.3.6. Distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Number Tiles: FREE Problem Solving Activities for the Primary Grades”

by Scipi – Math and Science

Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

number tiles problem solving

This FREE Number Tiles resource is a ten page booklet containing six different math problem solving activities for the primary grades. The activities extend from simple counting, to greater than or less than to solving addition and subtraction problems. Since the students do not write on the pages, they can be copied and laminated so they can be used from year to year. Students solve the Number Tile Math Activities by arranging ten number tiles.

The number tiles can be made from construction paper, cardboard, or square colored tiles. (How to make the number tiles is included in the handout.) Each activity is on a single page, and varies in difficulty. Since the students have the freedom to move the tiles around, they are more engaged and more willing to try multiple methods to find the solution.

These activities are suitable for the visual and/or kinesthetic learner.

If your students enjoy these free activities, you might like the full 23 page version:

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Journal Prompts FREE”

by Ruth S.

4th – 10th Grade

journal prompts

Journal Prompts FREE
* * * *

Do you have students who say they don’t like to write or those who say they don’t know what to write about? Watch pencils fly across their papers when they’re given my 260 prompts that be used for daily journal writing or to encourage class discussions. Suggestions of how to use them are included. Great for morning meetings and centers! Take a look at the comments teachers have made about my prompts and you’ll understand why they’ve been downloaded thousands of times!

IMPORTANT If you’ve downloaded my prompts previously, this is a new packet of 270 prompts! New prompts have been added and more! There is also a new cover for the packet that has “270” on it even though 260 still appears. These prompts are being used by elementary, middle and secondary teachers (up to 10th grade). Secondary teachers have mentioned that they use them with certain groups of students who just don’t like to write and or who have difficulty writing even the first sentence of a response. Whatever the case, there are many various ways to use them and now with over 130,000 downloads I’m REALLY HAPPY!! 🙂 Why?
Because I know what it’s like to have journal prompts that students don’t relate to!
Enjoy!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Greek and Latin Roots: Greek Roots Visual Flash Cards-Part 1”

by Steve’s Classroom

5th – 10th Grade

greek roots flashcards

These printable flash cards work like traditional flash cards, except instead of using plain ol’ text, they use interesting and colorful photos and illustrations to teach your students the meaning of Greek roots. How does it work? You show an image to the class, and students associate that image with a Greek stem.

For example, you might show a photo of colorful crayons. Students look at the crayons and think, “Crayons, color…chrom!” They associate the colorful crayons with the Greek root chrom. A meaningful and lasting mental connection is made.

This download contains three sets of 30 or more flash cards. Each set covers 10 roots.

I’ve used these flash cards many times with middle school and high school English and Science classes. The students enjoy it and it works.

Great for Literacy Centers or pocket charts. Just print them on card stock and paste them back to back. Voila, you have big, colorful, visual flash cards. Optionally, you can keep the photo and the answer separate and have students match the root to the picture that fits the root.

This is part one of a two-part series. This part covers the following Greek roots.

1. anti – against, opposite
2. aristo – best
3. astro – star
4. auto – self
5. bi – two
6. bio – life
7. chrom – color
8. chron – time
9. cine/kine – motion
10. cosm – universe, world, order

The second part can be found here.
Greek Roots Visual Flash Cards – Part 2 (CRACY – ZOO)

This mnemonic tool works just like flash cards, but it is far more effective and fun because it uses high-quality images and illustrations to help your students build meaningful and lasting mental connections. Perfect for visual learners but suited to all types.

There are three, research-proven components to memorization, and this tool covers all three:
Teach to multiple sensory modalities, i.e. visual learners.
Information is remembered best if it is interesting or useful.
New information is easier to remember if it can be linked to something already stored in the memory bank.

In these PowerPoints, you will find two or more images to represent each root. Having more than one image allows you to use the flash cards again and again, practicing the same roots over and over, without boring the kids with the same images they have already seen before. There are enough choices that you will never show the exact same set of images twice unless you want to. Another reason I provide more than one image per root is that some roots, like cosm or phys, have more than one meaning, so it is important to teach all the meanings. Also, having three or more images allows you to tailor the PowerPoint to your students’ experience and maturity.

I have used this tool many times in the past with great success. I created it when I was teaching summer school English. Classes were long and the students’ grade levels were varied. I needed something flexible and fun, easy enough for everyone to understand, and worthwhile. I wanted to teach the students something measurable, so I could be sure they had learned something useful in their five weeks of Summer School. Students enjoyed it and it worked.

It’s flexible enough to be used for entire periods or small pockets of time. It requires few materials. Forget about spending hours in the copy room duplicating packets or handouts. All the kids need are some roots and meanings written on the board, some notebook paper, and something to write with. It can be used again and again.

There are many things I love about using this mnemonic tool in the classroom.
Cross-curricular: Greek roots are found in every subject, from Science to Math to English to Art to Phys Ed.
Very little prep time required – just decide what Greek roots you want to cover, mix up the slides, and away you go.
Little to no materials required.
Flexible – use it for an entire period or just a few minutes.

All of the images in these mnemonic flash cards were used in accordance with the terms of use set by their creators. No images were used without permission.
This product is in Microsoft Office PowerPoint Version 97-2003.

FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON – “You Decide: Loyalist, Neutral, or Revolutionary”

by Smart Apple

6th – 8th Grade

you decide revolution

Great for teaching the American Revolution. Three short biographies for students to read and decided if the person may be for the revolution, supporting the British, or not sure. Students are asked to defend their choices and there may be varied opinions in the classroom. Students can work alone or in groups.

*************************************************************************
John Adams once said: “We were about one-third Tories, and one-third timid, and one-third true blue.” In other words, 1/3 of the population was in favor of the Revolution, 1/3 was opposed, and 1/3 was neutral.
