How to Talk to Parents and Keep them on Your Side

One of the main things I realized, after years of teaching, is that parents need you to care about their child, they want you to make their learning experience interesting, challenging and fun. The best way to do this is to make sure their little one knows that you are there to listen, and support them with positive reinforcement and encouragement

Free “Rock and Roll Math Problems” Assessment Strategy Tool

Looking for an engaging strategy to use when reviewing multiple-choice math problems?
“Rock and Roll Math Problems” provides engagement while students are completing multiple-choice math problems. This assessment tool encourages student groups to explore various parts of the problem-solving process.
Here’s how it works:
1. Pair students and assign them to be Partner A or Partner B.
2. Provide each pair with a number cube (die).
3. Provide each pair with a concept-based word problem or multiple-choice item.
4. Partner A rolls the number cube and then uses the Rock and Roll activity page to determine which task to complete.
5. Partner B completes the activity indicated on the number cube using the word problem or multiple-choice item.
6. If Partner A does not understand Partner B’s response, Partner A should ask clarifying questions until the response is understood.
7. Pairs should continue alternating rolls until all of the tasks have been completed or for the allotted amount of time.
8. As a class, have pairs discuss their responses to each of the tasks. Be sure to highlight any responses which reveal essential understandings or new strategies.
9. Begin the process again with a new problem if available. (Note: Sometimes, one well-developed question is more effective than several basic ones. Be sure to choose a task that will give you the most bang for your buck.)

Comment Bank

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Comment-Bank-1218405

Comment Bank

Product Description

Do you run out of meaningful criticism for your students’ high school papers and work?

I created this comment bank because I had the same problem. After a little while, you don’t know what to write on a student’s test.

The Comment Bank has been constructed to save the Language Arts teacher time when offering constructive and helpful comments on students’ evaluations. Marking papers in any Language Arts class is always a lengthy process. Increasingly, teachers are being asked to write more detailed comments to highlight students’ strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes we run out of ideas. Being the vigilant teachers we are, and wanting to help our students achieve their potential is and will always be one of our priorities. To this end, when marking students’ papers, writing down everything we want to say to them about their papers would be a very lengthy process. I have decided to share my personal comment bank with you.

The bank comments on the following areas:

-Structure
-Communication
-The next step
-Mechanics
-Style
-Persuasion
-Analysis

The package contains 7 pages of comments, which are divided by levels of accomplishment A, B, C and D. (levels 100 to 50)

Included in this package are over 120 comments for students. You can get inspiration from these pages to hand write your comments, or you can do what I do and copy/paste your comments into a word document, print, and staple the comment to the students’ evaluations. This is a real time saver. Parents, students, and school administration LOVE this method of feedback. And, this way, it takes much less time to be much more efficient. I hope you enjoy it!

FREE MATH LESSON – “Multiplication of Multi Digit Numbers {FREEBIE}”

by Katie Jones

4th – 5th Grade

MAFS 5.NBT.2.5
Common Core 5.NBT.5

Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

This product comes with the learning goal and scale. I’ve included a version with the common core standard and a version with the MAFS standard. There are 32 task cards for you to use in your student engaged classroom. The answer key is provided.

Task cards can be used for a variety of purposes, such as:
1. cut apart and insert into academic notebooks for students to solve
2. exit slips
3. place in a learning center for students to practice while you meet with other students for differentiated instruction
4. Scoot!

Scoot! Directions: Place the cards around the classroom. Each student (or pair of students) start at a different card and solves the problem. The student records the answer on their paper. When the appropriate amount of time has passed (dependent on skill), signal for the students to rotate to the next card in numerical order. I like to use music to signal movement. Students continue to rotate around the classroom solving each problem. This is a great review activity to engage students and use movement in your classroom.

This produce is geared toward 5th grade standards. It could be used as enrichment in 4th grade or as an intervention tool in middle school.

Essay Evaluation Comments with Drop Down Boxes

Product Description

Please note that this document does not work with a Mac computer.

Automated Comment Generator for THE ESSAY

This document has been created to help teachers evaluate students’ essays quickly and efficiently while including as many detailed comments as possible. It is created in a Microsoft Word document so that you can easily modify it to suit your particular classroom needs. (You also have the option to copy and paste the entire page, or certain elements.) The document is completely modifiable, even the comments. The “grunt work” has been done for you.

This quickens the evaluation process and will help the teacher to write down information more quickly. This particular document has been embedded with drop down boxes with comments on: persuasion, information presented, analysis, style, structure, communication, sources and format.

Take a look at the preview for a better idea of what this product can do for you.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Close Read “How a Volcano Works” (Informational Text)”

by Talented in Third

3rd – 5th Grade

This product will help your students learn close reading habits with the help of a free article from ReadWorks.org. The questions included will help you conduct a close reading for this informational text.

*****************************************************************************

It covers all of the Reading Informational Text Standards for the Common Core Third Grade Standards. It is a mixture of multiple choice, short answer, and extended answer questions. The questions are provided, which takes the guesswork out of close reading and allows you to integrate close reading into your daily schedule.

In order to do the reading, just print the article and questions for each student or group and start annotating this informational text. This would work especially well in an interactive notebook, so students can reference it in the future while doing close reading. This will also work as a class read, projected and read together, if printing is limited or not desired, with questions printed or discussed as a class.

*****************************************************************************

The close read questions included correlate to ReadWorks.org’s “Eruption” Part 2. This passage is all about how a volcano works. It is written at grade 3, lexile 820 level. This makes it an advanced individual read or a class/small group read. It can be found at: Eruption.

For this close read, I only used the third page of the text. If you are interested in the other part (pages 1 and 2), please see Close Read “Eruption”, Part 1.

This is all aligned to the Third Grade Common Core Standards, with a focus on asking questions that are aligned to the level of complexity the standards require. Many times, close readings will focus on the standards, but not at the right level of complexity, meaning students are answering questions below the level they need to. This practice doesn’t actually help them develop the skills they need. These questions will help you to focus on asking the right questions, so the practice will match the end of the year assessment, as well as helping your students develop the needed skills to do well in the future.
