FREE MATH LESSON – “FREE: Finding the GCF & LCM Using a Venn Diagram for Fractions and Algebra”

by Scipi – Science and Math

5th – 9th Grade

This 8 page free resource begins with the definitions for the math words factor, greatest common factor and least common multiple, and continues by explaining and illustrating what a factor tree is and how to construct and use a Venn Diagram as a graphic organizer to find the least common multiple.

Also incorporated into this free resource is how to use the two circle graphic organizer to factor out the Greatest Common Factor for polynomials or algebraic terms. A detailed example is provided to show how this same process can be used in algebra.

One of the practice pages is entitled “What’s Missing?” and requires the student to read a Venn Diagram to find the two missing numbers, their factors, the LCM and the GCF. A half page of three blank two circle Venn Diagrams is included.

What if there are three numbers? A three circle Venn Diagram would be used. This is fully shown in detail followed by a student practice page. A half page of blank, three circle Venn Diagrams is added to the resource so that the students can practice.

This resource is an effective and valuable tool when teaching fractions. It is also applicable and helpful in algebra when students are asked to find the LCM or GCF of a set of algebraic terms such as: 25xy, 40xyz. (LCM = 200xyz; GCF = 5xy) or when they must factor out the GCF from a polynomial such as 6x2y3 + 9xy2. An answer key is included.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Letter Discrimination Center Freebie! Great for tricky b, d, p, & q”

by Karen Pritchett

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Free supplemental pages to help with frequently reversed letters with a little math vocabulary and graphing tucked in as well. Easy to prepare – just print and go. No cutting, laminating, or color ink!

This free set includes 2 supplemental pages plus a graphing page. It can be used alone or with my big letter discrimination set in my shop. You can use these as a center or as a coloring worksheet for commonly reversed letters. I like to put mine in a page protector to use with bingo chips to save on copies.

I tucked in a little math vocabulary & counting into this literacy product. Each page has a place to write which letter they find the most and the least. I also included an optional graphing page for your students to color based on how many letters they find on each page.

I encourage my students to methodically search for one letter at a time by going left to right, just like reading a book.

If you like these sample pages, please check out the big set in my store. It contains over 20 themed sheets for each month of the school year (Aug-June) and sheets for each season along with some cut & paste sorting pages. Just print the pages, and you have a center that lasts all year! Click here to see it!

FREE MATH LESSON – “Kindergarten Problem of the Day – April”

by A Turn to Learn

Kindergarten

Have your Kindergarten students begin practicing mental math with this quick, easy, and FREE “Problem of the Day” routine! I ended up starting this routine as prep work for the story problems that are on the Kindergarten IOWA test… and my kids just love it!

WHAT TOPIC(S) DO THE PROBLEMS FOR THIS MONTH FOCUS ON?
This set, for April, focuses on subtraction stories.
(Scroll down to see the topics for the other months of the year.)

HOW CAN I USE THIS IN MY CLASSROOM?
You can use this however will work best for you! For me, this is a quick five minute routine that we do every morning.

My students really love some of the adaptations that we’ve done, including:
• adding their names into the story (on a rotating basis)
• using turn and talks (to explain their solution to a partner)
• describing their partner’s response (to encourage active listening)

Check out the blog post on the routine if you want to learn more about it!

HOW MUCH PREP WORK DO I NEED TO DO?
All you have to do is laminate, cut the page into four pieces, and go! That’s it!

IS THIS JUST ANOTHER MATH JOURNAL?
You could technically use these problems for math journals if you want, but this routine actually involves no paper and no pencils! If your students take the IOWA test, you know that the test doesn’t allow for students to use scrap paper to solve their math problems, so I use my problem of the day to focus on counting with our fingers and beginning to practice mental math!

WHAT TOPICS DO THE OTHER MONTHS HELP TEACH/REINFORCE?
Each month focuses on a different skill for your students to develop:
• August/September: Counting Within Our Classroom
• October: Counting Games (Number 0-5)
• November: Counting Games (Numbers 11-20)
• December: Counting Stories
• January: Basic Addition Stories (Numbers on Each Hand)
• February: Basic Addition Stories (Adding On)
• March: Subtraction Stories (Subtracting Numbers Less Than 5)
• April: Subtraction Stories (Subtracting Numbers Less Than 10) (FREE!)
• May: Addition or Subtraction Problem Solving
• June/July: Addition or Subtraction Problem Solving

CAN I BUY ALL OF THE MONTHS TOGETHER?
If you want to save more than 40% and have a whole year of math word problems ready to go, you can purchase all of the sets as a bundle here:
• BUNDLE for the whole year

Enjoy!

FREE MATH LESSON – “2nd Grade Math Morning Work – Two FREE Weeks”

by Teacher Addict

2nd Grade

These two free weeks come from my 2nd Grade Math Morning Work Set. Week 4 gives a glimpse on how the morning work sheets are set up for the first half of the year, and week 21 gives a glimpse on how the morning work sheets are set up for the second half of the year.

The whole product covers and practices ALL of the common core objectives for third grade math.

Monday through Friday are on one page, so you only have to print one page for each student per week.

In addition to having work Monday through Friday, there is also a challenge problem for students to work on if they get finished early on any of the previous days. Basically, it is a built in differentiation piece.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE Not Your Grandma’s Book Report: 30 Creative Ways to Respond to Literature”

by Aspire to Inspire Classroom Resources

3rd – 8th Grade

Turn book reports from drab to FAB! This list of 30 creative alternatives to the traditional book report emphasizes multiple intelligences and student imagination. I’ve also included suggested requirements for these thoughtful–and fun–responses to literature.

********************************************************************************

READY TO INCORPORATE THESE IN YOUR CLASS NOW? UPGRADE!
Buy the Not Your Grandma’s Book Report Bundle, and get everything your students need to show what they know about what they’ve read!

Includes 150+ organized pages of:

–30 detailed project descriptions with requirements
–Graphic organizers for every project
–Templates to create final projects
–Rubrics specifically written for each project
–Suggested uses
–Table of Contents (what’s included for each project)
–Common Core standards references

OR

INCORPORATE THESE INTO A LARGER ELA PROJECT:
Looking to replace traditional book reports with a comprehensive Common Core language arts project that includes these response project ideas? Check out the BIG ELA Book Report Project FULL VERSION.

The BIG ELA Book Report Project FULL VERSION combines reading, writing, speaking, and listening tasks, which engages students and allows them to demonstrate what they know in many different ways. Each part of this project is aligned with an ELA Common Core standard.

–Reading: Students read a book of their choice from a specified genre. Then, they demonstrate comprehension and higher-level thinking by completing two response projects from the Not Your Grandma’s Book Report Bundle.

–Writing: Students also demonstrate comprehension by completing a genre-specific handout that requires knowledge of the setting, characters, plot, problem, and solution. Students are also asked to relate the book to themselves with opinion questions that require support from the book.

–Speaking: Students use their knowledge of the book and opinions with support to prepare and give a 3-5 minute book talk to persuade classmates to read the book.

-Listening: Students demonstrate active listening skills by completing a feedback form for each book talk. Students write down details from each book talk and evaluate whether they would like to read the book in the future.

I also offer a LITE version of the BIG ELA Book Report Project that is compatible with Not Your Grandma’s Book Report LITE.

Your questions are welcome, and your feedback is appreciated!

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Creating Measurable Criteria for Student Work”

by The Creative Classroom

Pre-Kindergarten – 12th Grade

As we all know, a major component of the Common Core State Standards is students being able to self assess their learning and evaluating the work they produce. Therefore, it is our job as teachers to provide students with a list of measurable criteria that they can use to self assess their progress towards a learning target. In addition, the list of measurable criteria can help you to create models of exemplary work that students can also use to self assess. This step by step handout will help you to focus on the learning target to identify essential learning and develop how students will demonstrate mastery of the learning target. You can then take these pieces of the puzzle to create clear and specific statements that describe exactly what your students needs to do to master their learning in any subject. There is also a model handout already completed to help guide you through the process of creating measurable criteria.

ADDITIONAL FLASHCARD SETS:
Interactive Flashcards (Short “E”)
Interactive Flashcards (Short “I”)
Interactive Flashcards (Short “O”)
Interactive Flashcards (Short “U”)
Interactive Flashcards *AEIOU* (BUNDLE)

INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Print one 8.5×11 page per student (8 flashcards per page)
2) Students cut on dotted lines to make individual flashcards.
3) Students use picture cues to fill in the missing letters (mouse/apple/turtle = m / a / t)
4) Students use individual flashcard sets to “test” a partner, blending phonemes into CVC words (c / a / t = cat)

Note: If students are just beginning to learn the sounds of the letters, and are still learning how to segment and blend, you might want to cut the 8.5×11 sheets into two sets (an/at endings) and use them on two different days.

Suggested Extension:
Students read/blend the word, then draw a picture on the back of the flashcard. For more advanced students, have them write a simple sentence using the words in context.

If you’d prefer letter tiles instead of flashcards, I do have a set of “Interactive Letter Tiles” (requested by another wonderful buyer) that includes A-Z tiles, as well as a set of digraph tiles.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Gold Coins Missing Numbers 0-20 FREEBIE”

by Sherry Clements

Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

Gold Coins Missing Numbers 0-20 FREEBIE —

This two page freebie gives students the opportunity to practice writing numbers 0-10 on one page and 11-20 on the second page. The first and last numbers on each page are included to get the students started. Numbers are written on gold coin shapes to give motivation for the skill. A number line is included at the top of both pages to aid students in writing the numbers correctly and in order.

These pages can be laminated or put in a page protector for a math center and have students fill in the correct numbers with a dry erase marker. Then wipe the sheets off, and they are ready for another student.

They can also be used as a race to the end activity. Make two copies of the chosen sheet 0-10 or 11-20. Have two students see who can correctly fill in the numbers first without writing them backwards and making sure they are written neatly so they can be read.

I hope your students have fun with this FREE number writing activity!

Please leave me some love/feedback–Thanks!
