Free Back to School Literacy Lessons K-2

Hello my friends! Have you started to think about Back to School yet? (Has anyone ever really stopped?)

It’s an exciting time of year, and I always find it easier to sleep when I at least have the first few days planned out – and that involves getting to know my students. I like to find out who they are as people, how they feel about various aspects of school, get a glimpse of their skills, and most importantly – know how they’ll be getting home from school!

Disclaimer: This activity is by no means a guaranteed method of validating a child’s transportation arrangements for one day or the entire school year, but does make a nice introduction to a graphing activity.

I wanted to share this ten page Back to School literacy sampler with you, so you will have a window into some of the products I use with my K-2 students at the beginning of the year.

What else is in the BTS sampler?

I do not want to ruin the surprise, but I will tell you that this sampler could lead you to more free samples…especially if you like Sight-Word PreEmergent (Level aa) or Emergent (Level A and B) readers with sentence puzzles and fun follow ups.

Ok, getting carried away now. Almost told you about the crazy fun game I’m making. But I didn’t!

I will leave you with this thought, however. Start collecting smart phone boxes.

Enjoy summer for as long as you can!

Take care,

Ida Mae, aka

FREE MISC. LESSON – “{freebie} First Day of School Parent Letter – EDITABLE”

by My Happy Place

Pre-Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

These simple parent letters are designed to help you and your students communicate with their parents about the first day of school. This freebie includes letters for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.

This is an editable PowerPoint document. You must have PowerPoint to use this file.

Each page contains two text boxes that you can fill with your own text prior to printing. Alternatively, you can delete the text in the boxes and print the page with no text if you would prefer to hand write your notes.

You can choose to prepare these notes in their entirety before the first day of school by filling the text boxes with information about what you have planned and what you want parents to know going forward.

If you would prefer, you can type a little note in the bottom text box, but leave the top box empty for your students to fill in at the end of the day.

A third option would be to use the bottom box to hand write a quick note about each particular child and how their first day went.

If you have any questions, you can use the “Ask a Question” feature on my store page or email me at MyHappyPlaceTeachingProducts@gmail.com.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Sample – Teaching Inferring “What am I?””

by Kyp McLaren

Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

Understanding how to make an inference from text is often difficult for children. Children make inferences all the time without realizing exactly what they are doing. It is important to share with them that making inferences is like being a detective. You look at all the evidence or clues and put them together along with their background knowledge to come up with an idea about a situation or problem. This packet is filled with “close-ups” and pictures of 50 different creatures.

How to use “What am I?”:

Use the following pictures on a Smartboard, in small groups or individually to introduce and teach the reading comprehension strategy of inferring.

Begin by having my students look closely at the picture of the close-up. Ask them what they see or observe in this picture? What details do they notice? What do they see when looking “closely”? What might they infer this is, based on what they see in the close-up?

Next, have your students make a list of clues or evidence to support their conclusions about the close-up. Using the clues or evidence, what inference can they make about what this creature is? Have them use their evidence to support their conclusions.

Common Core Standards introduced or covered include:

RL.1 and RIT.1 – Ask and answer questions about key details in a text

SL.2 – Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media

SL.3 – Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. (Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally)

SL.4 – Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Any claims of correlation or alignment to the CCSS or WIDA ELD Standards are solely those of Tools for Teachers by Kyp McLaren and have not been evaluated or endorsed by WIDA or the NGA.

Kyp McLaren is the sole creator of this product and is not associated with the entities who created the standards.

The Common Core Standards were developed and written by the NGA. © Copyright 2010. National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and Council of Chief State School Officers. All rights reserved.”

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Jack & the Hungry Giant {FREE book activity about the MyPlate nutrition program}”

by Loreen Leedy

Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

MyPlate is the nutrition education program that has taken the place of the USDA’s Food Pyramid. My picture book, Jack & the Hungry Giant Eat Right with MyPlate, provides a kid-friendly introduction to MyPlate. Like the traditional fairy tale, Jack climbs up the beanstalk and enters the giant’s castle. The giant scoops him up, says “I’m hungry!” so the terrified Jack makes a dive for it. The giant catches him and advises him to be careful. Waldorf turns out to be a nice giant as well as a wonderful chef who is delighted to invite Jack to enjoy a healthy meal. The full color artwork has large illustrations of the fruits, vegetables, and other food groups as they’re being prepared.

For more info about the book, please see this post on my blog.

This FREE packet contains the I Can Fill Up My Plate! printables for students to respond to writing prompts and write lists of foods in the Fruit, Vegetables, Grains, Protein, and Dairy groups. Next they decide which foods to put on their plate. They label the foods and color the page. They may draw the foods or paste cut-outs in a collage. To make the book available in your school, please request it from your librarian.

Here are more resources related to Books!

Click here to see all my Writing resources.

Enjoy, and please leave feedback if you found this activity useful. Thank you!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Smartboard Color Word Mix Up”

by Smart Kinder Kids

Pre-Kindergarten – 4th Grade

A fun and engaging way for students to learn their color words on the Smart Board! This activity can be used Whole Group, Small Group or individually and is a GREAT addition to your Daily 5 Word Work options. My kids LOVE building these words! Differentiation is key to meeting our students’ varied needs and this activity will allow for your children to work at their individual level.

Level 1 can be used for pre-K and K and first grade students (or struggling older students) to sequence letters as an introduction to color words where students build the color words matching letter for letter against the word on the left.
Level 2 allows for higher order thinking while still supporting the learner with color coded clues.
Level 3 requires the student to use background knowledge, prediction, trial and error, phonemic awareness skills, etc. to build the words correctly using all of the letters.

I hope your kids enjoy this as much as mine do! For more smartboard ideas check out my blog @ http://smartkinderkids.blogspot.com/
