How to Talk to Parents and Keep them on Your Side

One of the main things I realized, after years of teaching, is that parents need you to care about their child, they want you to make their learning experience interesting, challenging and fun. The best way to do this is to make sure their little one knows that you are there to listen, and support them with positive reinforcement and encouragement

Project-Based Learning: Three Things to Remember When You Count Like an Egyptian

By Tracy Willis of Wild Child Designs

Project-based learning is beneficial for so many reasons, but the reason that I love it so much is that it allows students to discover new passions that the curriculum doesn’t necessarily introduce.Project-based learning, however, is only as successful as the teacher’s pedagogy. Free “Rock and Roll Math Problems” Assessment Strategy Tool

Looking for an engaging strategy to use when reviewing multiple-choice math problems?
“Rock and Roll Math Problems” provides engagement while students are completing multiple-choice math problems. This assessment tool encourages student groups to explore various parts of the problem-solving process.
Here’s how it works:
1. Pair students and assign them to be Partner A or Partner B.
2. Provide each pair with a number cube (die).
3. Provide each pair with a concept-based word problem or multiple-choice item.
4. Partner A rolls the number cube and then uses the Rock and Roll activity page to determine which task to complete.
5. Partner B completes the activity indicated on the number cube using the word problem or multiple-choice item.
6. If Partner A does not understand Partner B’s response, Partner A should ask clarifying questions until the response is understood.
7. Pairs should continue alternating rolls until all of the tasks have been completed or for the allotted amount of time.
8. As a class, have pairs discuss their responses to each of the tasks. Be sure to highlight any responses which reveal essential understandings or new strategies.
9. Begin the process again with a new problem if available. (Note: Sometimes, one well-developed question is more effective than several basic ones. Be sure to choose a task that will give you the most bang for your buck.)

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Close Read “How a Volcano Works” (Informational Text)”

by Talented in Third

3rd – 5th Grade

This product will help your students learn close reading habits with the help of a free article from ReadWorks.org. The questions included will help you conduct a close reading for this informational text.

*****************************************************************************

It covers all of the Reading Informational Text Standards for the Common Core Third Grade Standards. It is a mixture of multiple choice, short answer, and extended answer questions. The questions are provided, which takes the guesswork out of close reading and allows you to integrate close reading into your daily schedule.

In order to do the reading, just print the article and questions for each student or group and start annotating this informational text. This would work especially well in an interactive notebook, so students can reference it in the future while doing close reading. This will also work as a class read, projected and read together, if printing is limited or not desired, with questions printed or discussed as a class.

*****************************************************************************

The close read questions included correlate to ReadWorks.org’s “Eruption” Part 2. This passage is all about how a volcano works. It is written at grade 3, lexile 820 level. This makes it an advanced individual read or a class/small group read. It can be found at: Eruption.

For this close read, I only used the third page of the text. If you are interested in the other part (pages 1 and 2), please see Close Read “Eruption”, Part 1.

This is all aligned to the Third Grade Common Core Standards, with a focus on asking questions that are aligned to the level of complexity the standards require. Many times, close readings will focus on the standards, but not at the right level of complexity, meaning students are answering questions below the level they need to. This practice doesn’t actually help them develop the skills they need. These questions will help you to focus on asking the right questions, so the practice will match the end of the year assessment, as well as helping your students develop the needed skills to do well in the future.

Free Math Talk Moves Poster

Using mathematical discussions in the classroom is a powerful way to increase our students’ critical thinking and communication skills. Effective communication about mathematics is essential to help students develop the thinking, self-questioning, and explanation skills needed to master required skills and concepts.
A successful mathematics program emphasizes communicating mathematically frequently in the classroom. In fact, most state standards include competencies related to communicating effectively through mathematical language, justifying solutions, and evaluating the mathematical thinking of others.
“Math Talk Moves” are moves made by the student during math talk in the classroom. Teachers can use the moves to teach students how to make connections and respond to others during a discussion of math problems.
Grab a free copy of the poster here or click on the image.

The way I use this resource…
In writing, I scaffold and model information to my students. Each class is different and each year is different; therefore, I can’t do everything the same each time I teach the same subject. I start with the basic rubric and introduce 1-3 new concepts each essay. Once I introduce a concept, I hold students accountable for the concepts I taught. If it appears that the majority of the class does not understand the concept, I do not hold them accountable and I reteach the concept. I try not to stifle their creativity by focusing on spelling, capitalization, and punctuation during the first two terms of school depending on the class. I also can easily use the 6 traits of writing with the rubrics. Make sure you choose a topic that is relevant, relatable, and the reasons are researchable.
Next, I introduce the peer editing checklist. I have students pair up and exchange papers. I have clipboards students can use while they sit around the room for this activity. It’s important for you to model for the students how to peer edit. Many times students just want to be nice and not give feedback. However, this is a great opportunity for students to read each others essays and learn from each other. I try not to let the same students peer edit with each other every time in order for students to view a variety of styles over the school year.
Finally, you are able to print front and back! Then you can cut them in half to save on paper. For example, pages 12 and 13 are the same rubric. Simply print it from your computer or printer as two-sided. If this does not work for you, print the first rubric for a full page rubric.
Happy Teaching!
Sally
