FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE Not Your Grandma’s Book Report: 30 Creative Ways to Respond to Literature”

by Aspire to Inspire Classroom Resources

3rd – 8th Grade

Turn book reports from drab to FAB! This list of 30 creative alternatives to the traditional book report emphasizes multiple intelligences and student imagination. I’ve also included suggested requirements for these thoughtful–and fun–responses to literature.

********************************************************************************

READY TO INCORPORATE THESE IN YOUR CLASS NOW? UPGRADE!
Buy the Not Your Grandma’s Book Report Bundle, and get everything your students need to show what they know about what they’ve read!

Includes 150+ organized pages of:

–30 detailed project descriptions with requirements
–Graphic organizers for every project
–Templates to create final projects
–Rubrics specifically written for each project
–Suggested uses
–Table of Contents (what’s included for each project)
–Common Core standards references

OR

INCORPORATE THESE INTO A LARGER ELA PROJECT:
Looking to replace traditional book reports with a comprehensive Common Core language arts project that includes these response project ideas? Check out the BIG ELA Book Report Project FULL VERSION.

The BIG ELA Book Report Project FULL VERSION combines reading, writing, speaking, and listening tasks, which engages students and allows them to demonstrate what they know in many different ways. Each part of this project is aligned with an ELA Common Core standard.

–Reading: Students read a book of their choice from a specified genre. Then, they demonstrate comprehension and higher-level thinking by completing two response projects from the Not Your Grandma’s Book Report Bundle.

–Writing: Students also demonstrate comprehension by completing a genre-specific handout that requires knowledge of the setting, characters, plot, problem, and solution. Students are also asked to relate the book to themselves with opinion questions that require support from the book.

–Speaking: Students use their knowledge of the book and opinions with support to prepare and give a 3-5 minute book talk to persuade classmates to read the book.

-Listening: Students demonstrate active listening skills by completing a feedback form for each book talk. Students write down details from each book talk and evaluate whether they would like to read the book in the future.

I also offer a LITE version of the BIG ELA Book Report Project that is compatible with Not Your Grandma’s Book Report LITE.

Your questions are welcome, and your feedback is appreciated!

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Creating Measurable Criteria for Student Work”

by The Creative Classroom

Pre-Kindergarten – 12th Grade

As we all know, a major component of the Common Core State Standards is students being able to self assess their learning and evaluating the work they produce. Therefore, it is our job as teachers to provide students with a list of measurable criteria that they can use to self assess their progress towards a learning target. In addition, the list of measurable criteria can help you to create models of exemplary work that students can also use to self assess. This step by step handout will help you to focus on the learning target to identify essential learning and develop how students will demonstrate mastery of the learning target. You can then take these pieces of the puzzle to create clear and specific statements that describe exactly what your students needs to do to master their learning in any subject. There is also a model handout already completed to help guide you through the process of creating measurable criteria.

FREE 5-E Model Lesson Planning Tool

Want to know more about the components of a 5-E model lesson plan?

One of the best ways I have found to teach a good math lesson is through the use of the 5-E model. I love the 5-E model because it allows the students to explore and discover the content on their own before I provide additional information and strategies.

The 5-E model also allows me to facilitate the lesson through questioning and assess the students’ understanding throughout the lesson through my observations. While I regularly plan my lessons using this format, I have found it necessary to adapt the format to fit the needs of my students. With that in mind, I will add that this lesson format may take me more than one day to complete and I sometimes complete several explore and explain cycles before getting to the elaboration stage. It all depends on the students!

You can get a more detailed look at how I use the 5-E model lesson with my free lesson plan template. It includes a description of each of the five Es and activity ideas that can be used to address each component.

Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of my 5-E model lesson plan template.

FREE Math Station Game Bag Labels

Need to organize your math station materials?

One of the most challenging parts of implementing math stations is staying organized. Because math stations have a lot of moving parts, it can be time-consuming to manage all of the materials; however, if you invest the time upfront to organize your materials, it will save you hours of time later.
To help you get organized, I’m sharing a free copy of my math station game labels. The labels are formatted for Microsoft Word and can be printed on Avery (5163)-style shipping labels. After printing, write the name of the game in the center space.

Need to get your math station materials organized?

One of the most challenging parts of implementing math stations is staying organized. Because math stations have a lot of moving parts, it can be time-consuming to manage all of the materials; however, if you invest the time upfront to organize your materials, it will save you hours of time later.

One of the strategies that has been most useful for me is to keep station games and activities organized in labeled plastic bags that include all of the necessary materials. I can then store the bags in a file cabinet for easy access later.

Click here or on the image above to grab a free set of labels to use in your classroom to organize your game materials. The labels are formatted for Microsoft Word and can be printed on Avery (5163)-style shipping labels. After printing, write the name of the game in the center space.

Improve vocabulary and classroom cooperation

Encourage friendship and community in your classes while improving vocabulary at the same time!

So much better than those common, perfunctory, pre-printed Valentines!

Little Love Letters includes a Matching Exercise (with KEY) for improving knowledge of many adjectives that explore character traits. It improves word power while also serving as written prompts for the personal Valentines.  The notes themselves give students a little nudge toward class cooperation and affirmation.  Complete, clear, and simple instructions and forms for busy teachers are added.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Valentine Writing {FREE}”

by Growing Smart Readers

Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

Have students write a thank you for being a friend, or a letter to tell someone why they are special. Writing a Valentine letter is a great alternative to a store-bought card.

Make it ANY day letter writing, Not just Valentine’s Day!
These brief letter template letters are versatile and applicable for ANY day to write and send.

They are not necessarily Valentine specific! But the bows and hearts do make it a Valentine-theme.

There are just a few lines for the body, but that’s so the kids just get the gist of the parts of a letter.

* 1 page for “parts of a friendly letter”
* 3 letter writing frames (with sentence stems)
* 6 stationery pages (no words) with lines for the 5 parts of a letter.
* Some have colored graphics, some are black and white.

Great for struggling writers who WANT to write, but have difficulty getting started.

Include in your writing center–Or teach the parts of a friendly letter, and hand this out for homework.

Younger children may even want to write a letter to a favorite stuffed toy! 🙂 Great practice even if they do not send their letters!

Thanks for stopping by! Please let me know if this was just what you were looking for!
