Class Alien Writing Journal

By Sparking Children’s Thinkibility

Grades Kindergarten-4th English Language Arts, Balanced Literacy, Writing

Writing activities should be exciting and what could be more exciting than writing a journal about things that you have done together with an alien.

alien

Imagine how fun it would be to write about the day when you took an alien with you to after school activities, showed the alien what we eat for dinner on Earth, read a bedtime story, and then watched the night sky and searched for the alien’s home planet.

I strongly believe that astronomy is a very important topic. Exploring the possibilities of life on other planets easily captures children’s attention but it also makes children value and consider things on Earth in a different way. Learning to consider the perspective of other people, animals and even aliens is a great thinking tool that is useful in lots of situations, from persuasive writing to feeling empathy with other living creatures. Good problems solvers are skilled at twisting and turning viewpoints around and imagining the situation from several different perspectives.

The developmental psychologist Jean Piaget often discussed the importance of shifting the perspective. Other people’s view (OPV) is also a thinking tool suggest by Edward de Bono. I like to add my own twist by including animals in the thinking tool developed by Edward. And now I have added some aliens as well!

Below is an excerpt from the booklet “Class Alien Writing Journal

Dear Earthlings,

Thank you for accepting and welcoming our alien friend.

This alien is visiting Earth to learn more about you and your home . . .

. . . Remember the alien might feel a bit homesick so make sure that you study the sky together every day.

Alien regards

Alien nr 50 000 000 U.N.O.

FREE MATH LESSON – Math Addition Game

By:  The Owl Teacher

Grades 1-3

When I first began creating products for Teachers Pay Teachers, I experimented a little with creating some fun, tic-tac-toe math games.  That is where this freebie was born!  (Hence my old Owl Teacher Logo.)

addtiontictactoe2 8x8

This is a fun game where students play in pairs practicing their basic addition facts!  Here’s how it works…

Students draws a card and chooses a place to put their designated letter (an X or an O).  Just like tic-tac-toe, students want to get three in a row to win, while blocking and preventing their partner from doing just that.  So in order to place their letter, they must solve the math problem correctly.  Each time a student wins a round, he or she will keep that task card and move on to another.  The student with the most task cards at the end, wins!  Below is an image of four different task cards!

You can download this entire set of task cards FREE by heading over to my Teachers Pay Teachers store here.

Be a Snowflake Detective: Sparkling Crystal Fun & Facts

By: Sparking Children’s Thinkibility

Grades Kindergarten-4th Science, Geometry, Winter

All a snowflake detective need is snow, a magnifier glass and patience. As with all beauty, part of the allure is mystery. And snowflakes are beautiful.

Understanding snowflakes is not as simple as it might sound. But one thing is certain, namely that inner working of the way ice crystals grow in the clouds is a process that is still a bit of a puzzle to scientists.

A snowflake begins life as a dust particle in a cloud. If it is cold, water vapor condense on the dust and crystals are formed. The crystals grow and grow and eventually they become too heavy and large and a snowflake falls out of the cloud.

FREE LESSON – Speaking and Listening Task Cards

By:  The Owl Teacher

Grades 2- 5

Common Core is now focusing on more than just simple reading skills and strategies!  It’s also making sure that your students are able to communicate and listen well.  (Of course, my district was implementing something similar prior but it was not emphasized as much as now.)

I struggled in the beginning trying to figure out just how I was going to teach my third graders to listen.  Imagine – if there was ever a teacher that could actually 100% teach students to listen… he or she would be sensation!  A millionaire…

Ah, but I’m not here to dream or to convince you that I have the fool proof secret.  But I am here to give you a FREE tool that I use in the classroom to help my students work on this important life skill!

speakinglistening15

First head over to my blog by clicking here and download these really neat task cards!  Then print them in the colors you desire, cut them out, and laminate them back to back.  Cut a small slit along the bottom of the laminated card to insert a craft stick with a dab of hot glue.  Viola!  You have handy task cards!  (Of course, you can eliminate the stick!)

speakinglistening11

Here is a picture of both sides so you can see the thinking stems for both the speaker and the listener:

Speaking and Listening Cards

I hope these cards are useful for implementing those common core standards of speaking and listening… and hey, if you do manage to figure out the mysterious way to get *any* kid to truly 100% listen, be sure to let me know!  🙂

Math stations are one of the current hot button topics for educators and the sessions with the longest lines at any math conference because they are not only fun for students but can be adapted to address a whole host of learning styles– more than we can typically address in a whole class setting. However, using math stations effectively in the classroom can seem like an overwhelming endeavor for beginners. To support those teachers who have been wanting to get started with math stations and to share some of my favorite tips and techniques with beginners and novices alike, this 6-part series features the 5 Ws of math stations: Who, What, When, Where, and Why.

Phonological awareness refers to awareness of and access to the sound structure of language. Spoken words are comprised of strings or sequences of phonemes that signal different meanings. Awareness that changes in these sequences result in changes in meaning is crucial in literacy skills development. If a student cannot conceptualize the order of sounds and syllables in words, he cannot associate the sound units with written symbols.

Language Arts – “10 r – Controlled Activities & Games”

10 r-controlled-cover

This unit is a package of 10 activities and games that are designed to make it easy for students to learn to read r-controlled syllable type words. There are 6 syllable types, and r-controlled is one of the six types. These syllables are called –r-controlled because the –r is in control and the vowel is out of control when sounding out the word. Instead, of the vowels making their normal sounds, the –r decides for them what sound the vowel is going to make. Reading and spelling r-controlled words require visual memory and experience. These games will teach students a few consistent tips to remember when reading these kinds of words. There are five -r-controlled vowels–ar, -er, -ir, -or, -ur. These five vowel spellings make 4 different sounds. The packet includes 75 -r-controlled words cards and the following 10 games:

1. Climb a Tree

2. Grow a Centipede

3. Football Frenzy

4. Dominoes

5. Uno

MATH LESSON – Place Value and Rounding Unit

By:  The Owl Teacher

3rd Grade

I love Math Workshop!

Ever since the implementation of reading workshop and writing workshop, I have been hooked!

I love the structure of it and how engaging it is for kids.  Plus, with all these students struggling to focus for long periods of time- it’s perfect for them!

Since most people are relatively new to math workshop, I have created detailed and engaging lesson plans to help teachers implement it in their classroom, without the fear of losing important instructional time while learning all the many other new practices!

Mathworkshopunit

My Place Value and Rounding Unit (Titled Number Sense) is a great unit to start off Math Workshop with!  In this unit, there are 15 days of detailed, scripted lesson plans!  Of course, you are not obligated to utilize the script, it is only there to assist you in becoming familiar with the workshop language.

This unit contains a pretest to help you target the specific needs of your students along with a post test to see how well it went!  Additionally it contains the all important common core vocabulary on cards for your word wall or anytime you need them.

Each lesson contains a warm up activity, a mini-lesson, guided practice, independent practice, and a closing!  Of course there are also practice sheets, answer keys, and games to assist your students in learning!

Of course, it’s a hands-on unit, so you can expect lots of concrete activities with manipulatives to help all learners grasp the important common core standards.  Finally, to ensure I meet the various needs in your classroom, each lesson contains intervention suggestions and enrichment options!

This Workshop Unit is DEFINITELY worth it!

Read some of the reviews received so far:

Beth says:  “This product is AMAZING! Not only have you have thought of every single detail, but you have laid it out in a beautiful way that is easy for kids to use and keeps them engaged. Thank you for including visuals like anchor charts for each lesson and vocabulary cards. This will really help the students understand the concepts more clearly. I especially love that you even included scripted lesson plans. They will be really helpful when I have tutors or others pull kids for intensive intervention because it will guide them on exactly what to say! I also appreciate that you included standards for grades 2-4 so that these lessons can both remediate and enrich depending on the needs of the students. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Will you be making more sets for other math standards? (I hope so!)”

Mary says:  “Wow! You have put a lot of time and thought into this unit. It will be wonderful to have something to help me with guided math workshop for my students with special needs. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed with 3 groups, but this will help me teach everyone the basic concept and then differentiate to meet their needs!”

Teaching happiness in elementary?

Happiness Post pic.png

Are you a happy person? Do you remember yourself, siblings, friends and classmates as relatively happy children?

When you think back to your own friends and elementary school classmates, those you have taught over the years, does there seem to be an increase in students struggling with anxiety and / or stress, social and /or emotional issues?

It was once assumed that happiness was a child’s birthright, and thankfully, many children do continue to live happy, carefree lives. Some live very difficult lives.

Many of our students live in that grey, middle zone, where a combination of factors, sometimes one’s models, experiences, genes or things we may not yet be aware of,  might sway their perspective on whether one’s glass is half empty or half full.

Years ago, I taught a child who had fled from Syria with his family, and despite having so little, still stands out in my mind as the most content and grateful little boy I may have ever met. I can think of a number of others who appear to have everything, yet rarely seem genuinely happy. Of course, there are children who seem to have more challenges.

The children we collectively teach are unique individuals from different countries, lifestyles, belief systems, religions and experiences. While they are so different, they are still all the same. They’re children. Children with growing, open minds, who respond to humor, positive attention, role models and respect. And stories.

Many of us have worked with a number of very young, struggling children throughout our careers.

This book is for all children, but especially the glass-half-empty kids. There is so much hope there.

Happy Kids Preview

(And I thank those of you who have requested a ‘Happy Feelings’ book for prompting me to get it done!)

It is similar in style and structure to the popular Dealing With Feelings introductory color story All About Feelings with two child narrators interacting with the audience and each other as they observe some of The Secrets of Happy Kids.

As I was preparing to write this post, I was curious to see if there was such a thing as a Happiness Curriculum for kids, and was so happy to see that there is! In case you wonder why That Fun Reading Teacher writes about #EmotionalLiteracy, I’ll give it to you straight: Research and experience prove that many children who are overwhelmed with emotional concerns have little to no energy, attention or drive to give to learning to read and write.

Let’s start with happiness. Here are some FREE mini-posters from me to you, with thanks!

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – Layers of the Earth!

By:  The Owl Teacher

Grades 2-5

An earth science unit would never be complete without first discussing the three layers of the earth!  Most students know a thing or two about these layers.  They know the center is the core and it’s hot!  They know the crust is where the land is.  But why not see just how much they know?

EarthFreebie

If you head over to this page on my blog (found here) you will find this cute cut and paste freebie for your students!  They read each strip, then cut it out, and glue it under the correct column!  How fun is that?  Isn’t it nice to have a different activity related to the layers of the earth that is FREE!?!

Happy Teaching!

SCIENCE LESSON – Physical and Chemical Changes

By:  The Owl Teacher

Grades 3-6

When I taught fifth grade, I just loved the physical and chemical changes unit!  It was so much fun and really engaged my students.  So I have put it together for you!

This unit was so engaging because it is just packed full of hands-on experiments where students really dig into the properties of matter and determine what makes a physical change and what makes a chemical change.

For instance, we melt styrofoam cups:

melting cups

We also created slime:

20150919_181543

We explored the various properties of matter!  We looked closely at the three states – solid, liquid, and gas!

We talked about a variety of scenerios where students had to determine if something was a physical or chemical change!

Included in this engaging resource are practice sheets and review sheets, answer keys, lesson plans, experimental labs, and much more!  You’ll even find some interactive notebook pieces such as this:

Chemical and physical changes

This valuable resource can be found at my Teachers Pay Teachers store.  Click here to go to this product and read more about it!

LANGUAGE ARTS – “10 r-Controlled Games & Activities”

4. Dominoes

5. Uno

6. Clear the Board

7. Snail Shell

8. Wild Animal Race
