FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Language Arts Comprehension Check: Ten Sentence Format”

by Connie
4th – 12th Grade

Should educators tweet, “Good Bye” to proper paragraphs? Are these backbones of formal and informal writing becoming an endangered specie? Do students need to reinforce their basic understanding of the elements of a good paragraph in order to write and develop more in-depth essays? Do students need to learn how to write about the literature that they are reading?

This Ten Sentence Format will accomplish all of that. It is perfect for clarifying and reinforcing the parts of an essay, for using as an announced or unannounced quiz when teachers of students grades 6-12 wish to check reading and writing comprehension and for general writing practice or warm-ups.

It reviews and reinforces the basic structure of a paragraph: Introduction (Hook, overview, Thesis statement), Body (Main Idea, supporting details), and Conclusion (Concluding statement, last thought{I call this a kicker, as the last statement should end with a bang and not a whimper}).

Once students master this concept, they can easily be shown how the Main Idea paragraphs can be detailed and developed into more paragraphs to create a complete essay.

This product forms a part of the Writing Module in my book, The House of Comprehension. I am offering it here as a Free Sample Lesson so you can see the quality of the material in The House of Comprehension. Teachers who want to show their students how to build strong houses of comprehension can find 40 more activities like this in the book.

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Flower Clipart FREEBIE”

by CrunchyMom
Pre-Kindergarten – 12th Grade

Who wants a spring clipart FREEBIE?! Great for adding a punch of color to covers, or to embellish your spring, Easter, or Earth day resources, these doodle flower illustrations are just the thing 🙂 There are 5 different images, each in 3 different color variations. White-filled blacklines are also included. Enjoy!

All pieces are high resolution 300 dpi PNG images on transparent backgrounds and can easily be layered into your projects and lesson materials.

What Are Doodle Clips? Doodle Clips are images created from sketching traditionally (on paper), inking (blackline), then coloring either traditionally (with markers, pencils, or paint) or digitally. They tend to have a much more organic feel, and AREN’T composed of perfectly straight lines. There is beauty in imperfection, which is what I love most about Doodle Clips!

Spelling Flip Book

Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flipbook when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

Sentences – Grammar Circles for easy and effective grammar

Description

Teach grammar in a creative and meaningful way. No more boring grammar.

Simplify your life and make grammar fun and effective.

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit in grammar with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages, and then we would correct them together. It was tedious, and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and learn grammar. Although this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, directions, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (16 pages)

Activities included focus on:

❒ the logistics of the sentence (the basic parts)

❒ the prepositional phrase

❒ the adjective phrase

❒ the adverb phrase

❒ the verbal phrase

❒ the appositive phrase

❒ the independent and subordinate clauses

❒ subjects and predicates

❒ fragments

❒ run-on sentences

❒ types of sentences

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their work and learn from one another.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to about sentences.
