FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE Poetry Lesson, Father’s Day Card Materials for Older Students/Teens”

by Laura Randazzo

8th – 12th Grade

Remember the Father’s Day cards we made back in elementary school? Let’s revisit that tradition for our middle- and high-school students with these print-and-go materials that’ll make a bunch of dads (and father figures) feel appreciated on their special day.

Included:
• A student handout featuring eight slices of poetry about fathers/masculine power.
• Six coloring pages that fold in half to become cards (Print on white paper, colored paper, or cardstock – grab whatever’s available in the copier room and go!)

Suggested lesson procedure:
1. Begin by handing out the page that includes eight bits of poetry, giving students a few minutes to read them all.
2. Have students choose the poem that reminds them most of their father/closest paternal figure.
3. Give students a choice of card designs.
4. Inside the card, have them write a loving note to the recipient and include the lines of poetry in their best handwriting.
5. With any remaining time in class, have students color the front of the card with colored pencils or sharp-tipped markers. The coloring portion can be completed in class if time allows or sent home for students to complete on their own time.

Tip: When printing the cards, choose “Print Full Size” on your printer settings. If you choose “Scale to Fit” (the default on many printers), your cards may have unevenly spaced borders.

Teaching the Argument by Solving Mysteries

Product Description

Teaching the Argument by Solving Mysteries

This is a great introduction to any literature unit. It teaches students the proper approach to literary analysis, which can be used from grades 7 all the way to 12 in any levels of study.

This mini unit contains 8 lessons that teach students the proper way to form an argument. Many times students will use the right information, but they don’t quite know what to do with it. Through a series of crime scenes, students learn how to collect information (data), collect evidence, and explain how this evidence supports a logical conclusion, all while having fun. This unit teaches students skills that are needed in all literature units.
These lessons allow students to learn the importance of collecting data by taking careful notes, how to select only information that will help support a thesis (or a claim), and how to properly use the information by incorporating pertinent explanations to develop an irrefutable argument.

This is a fun way of learning the necessary skills for argumentation.
The unit contains:

A Student Guide with 12 pages of activities and notes
A Teacher Guide with 8 comprehensive lesson plans and activities
An answer Key with 13 pages of answers and sample texts to help model proper format for students
A downloadable Prezi Presentation introducing the argument and how to develop it.
An end unit evaluation with answer key and evaluation grid 6 pages
Material is available as both PDF and in Word format for easy modifications

The “Lure” of Fish – The Benefits of Keeping an Aquarium in Your Classroom

By Vicky Rauch of Scipi Products

When I taught third grade in an inner city school, I knew the children needed something to love, but being a city girl, my love of animals was deficient. That is when my husband helped me to set up an aquarium. I purchased a water heater, a bubblier, chemicals, plants, fish food, and of course the fish! Little did I know what effect this would have on my students.

Spelling Flip Book

Product Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flip book when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

Free: Contract for Rewriting an Evaluation – Self-Evaluation

Product Description

Contract for rewriting evaluations:

If your experiences are like mine, you often have students asking to redo work or to be given extra credit assignments. Personally, I believe in giving my students every opportunity to succeed. However, the sad reality is that students often decide to rely on our good and gracious nature and choose only to work after the fact. Meaning that students choose to “slack off” and retake the work later. In order to avoid this problem, I have created a self-evaluation sheet that students must complete (in detail) in order to have the opportunity to redo an evaluation. And, based on the students’ answers, the teacher can choose to allow a retake or not.
In addition, I often make students complete this sheet when first receiving a corrected evaluation (even when no retake is possible). It allows students to look at their work critically. In reality, a student who cannot identify his strengths and weaknesses won’t be able to successfully retake their evaluation or to do better on the next one.

It’s been a super useful tool for me. I have senior students who all expect to have 90% averages, which isn’t realistic. This helps me with both students, parents, and administration.
