Looking for a fun critical thinking activity to challenge your students’ thinking about shapes?
Pattern blocks. I know what you’re thinking. When you inherited your classroom, there were gobs of these random shapes, maybe even a few buckets of them. You thought to yourself, “What am supposed to do with these? We only teach geometry and shapes for three weeks!” Well, did you know that pattern blocks can be used for more than just your three-week geometry unit? Pattern blocks can be used all year long!

Have your Kindergarten students begin practicing mental math with this quick, easy, and FREE “Problem of the Day” routine! I ended up starting this routine as prep work for the story problems that are on the Kindergarten IOWA test… and my kids just love it!
WHAT TOPIC(S) DO THE PROBLEMS FOR THIS MONTH FOCUS ON?
This set, for April, focuses on subtraction stories.
(Scroll down to see the topics for the other months of the year.)
HOW CAN I USE THIS IN MY CLASSROOM?
You can use this however will work best for you! For me, this is a quick five minute routine that we do every morning.
My students really love some of the adaptations that we’ve done, including:
• adding their names into the story (on a rotating basis)
• using turn and talks (to explain their solution to a partner)
• describing their partner’s response (to encourage active listening)
Check out the blog post on the routine if you want to learn more about it!
HOW MUCH PREP WORK DO I NEED TO DO?
All you have to do is laminate, cut the page into four pieces, and go! That’s it!
IS THIS JUST ANOTHER MATH JOURNAL?
You could technically use these problems for math journals if you want, but this routine actually involves no paper and no pencils! If your students take the IOWA test, you know that the test doesn’t allow for students to use scrap paper to solve their math problems, so I use my problem of the day to focus on counting with our fingers and beginning to practice mental math!
WHAT TOPICS DO THE OTHER MONTHS HELP TEACH/REINFORCE?
Each month focuses on a different skill for your students to develop:
• August/September: Counting Within Our Classroom
• October: Counting Games (Number 0-5)
• November: Counting Games (Numbers 11-20)
• December: Counting Stories
• January: Basic Addition Stories (Numbers on Each Hand)
• February: Basic Addition Stories (Adding On)
• March: Subtraction Stories (Subtracting Numbers Less Than 5)
• April: Subtraction Stories (Subtracting Numbers Less Than 10) (FREE!)
• May: Addition or Subtraction Problem Solving
• June/July: Addition or Subtraction Problem Solving
CAN I BUY ALL OF THE MONTHS TOGETHER?
If you want to save more than 40% and have a whole year of math word problems ready to go, you can purchase all of the sets as a bundle here:
• BUNDLE for the whole year
Enjoy!

Looking for a great picture book to help your students understand multiplication with fractions?
One way to help students “see” the action of the operations is by using picture books. My favorite way to teach fraction multiplication is to start with Multiplying Menace. It’s a great springboard to introducing fraction multiplication. Not only will this book help your students “see” the operation, but it will allow students to compare the effects of multiplying whole numbers with the effects of multiplying by fractions.
To accompany the book, I created an activity to help students analyze the situations in the book. Click here or on the image to the right to grab a free copy the activity sheet.

These two free weeks come from my 2nd Grade Math Morning Work Set. Week 4 gives a glimpse on how the morning work sheets are set up for the first half of the year, and week 21 gives a glimpse on how the morning work sheets are set up for the second half of the year.
The whole product covers and practices ALL of the common core objectives for third grade math.
Monday through Friday are on one page, so you only have to print one page for each student per week.
In addition to having work Monday through Friday, there is also a challenge problem for students to work on if they get finished early on any of the previous days. Basically, it is a built in differentiation piece.

Want to know more about the components of a 5-E model lesson plan?
The 5-E model also allows me to facilitate the lesson through questioning and assess the students’ understanding throughout the lesson through my observations. While I regularly plan my lessons using this format, I have found it necessary to adapt the format to fit the needs of my students. With that in mind, I will add that this lesson format may take me more than one day to complete and I sometimes complete several explore and explain cycles before getting to the elaboration stage. It all depends on the students!
You can get a more detailed look at how I use the 5-E model lesson with my free lesson plan template. It includes a description of each of the five Es and activity ideas that can be used to address each component.

Gold Coins Missing Numbers 0-20 FREEBIE —
This two page freebie gives students the opportunity to practice writing numbers 0-10 on one page and 11-20 on the second page. The first and last numbers on each page are included to get the students started. Numbers are written on gold coin shapes to give motivation for the skill. A number line is included at the top of both pages to aid students in writing the numbers correctly and in order.
These pages can be laminated or put in a page protector for a math center and have students fill in the correct numbers with a dry erase marker. Then wipe the sheets off, and they are ready for another student.
They can also be used as a race to the end activity. Make two copies of the chosen sheet 0-10 or 11-20. Have two students see who can correctly fill in the numbers first without writing them backwards and making sure they are written neatly so they can be read.
I hope your students have fun with this FREE number writing activity!

Need to get your math station materials organized?
One of the most challenging parts of implementing math stations is staying organized. Because math stations have a lot of moving parts, it can be time-consuming to manage all of the materials; however, if you invest the time upfront to organize your materials, it will save you hours of time later.
One of the strategies that has been most useful for me is to keep station games and activities organized in labeled plastic bags that include all of the necessary materials. I can then store the bags in a file cabinet for easy access later.

Looking for Black History Month activities?
The movie Hidden Figures (20th century Fox, 2017) was by far one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It is based on the stories of three African American women– Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan. Initially hired by NASA to work as human computers, mathematicians who performed calculations for the work of NASA, each woman became an important contributor to NASA and the space race of the mid-twentieth century.
This crossword puzzle highlights the important contributions of these great African-American women. An answer key is included. Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of “The Women Behind NASA’s Human Computers” crossword puzzle.

Christmas Roll, Say & Keep
How to play: cut out the cards and place one card on each square on the mat face up. One child rolls the dice, and has to say the answer of the card on that spot.
If they get it right, they get to keep the card, if it’s wrong, they leave it there. It’s then their partners turn.
Play continues until all the cards have been taken.
I also included a blank set of cards in case you would like to add whatever concept you need at this time with your kids.
