FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON – “Christopher Columbus An Original Poem Freebie!”

by Mercedes Merrell

2nd – 3rd Grade

This is a sample of: Christopher Columbus 1492 A Literacy Unit which offers some history through my original poem. If you like the poem, please check out the corresponding unit. The complete unit includes a student printable book, vocabulary cards, ABC order adventures, word making activities, word fortune (addition with Scrabble-style pieces), narrative writing graphic organizers, (who? what? when? where? why? as well as beginning, middle, and end), along with pages for publishing their finished writing. This poem is the driving force of the unit that can be used during Daily 5-type centers, also incorporates some math! The vocabulary cards can be used for concentration-type games, flash cards, and word wall activities, in addition to the work I have included for them. The student printables are copier friendly, black and white that is! Enjoy the poem!

FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON – “The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution Activity: Freebie”

by Unitedtoteach

4th – 8th Grade

This is a FREEBIE. It breaks down the different parts of the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution, so that they are easily remembered. It makes the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution even more personally relevant, because it asks for the students to either draw illustrations for each component, or to cut and paste visuals for each component of the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution.

This is a sample to a larger paid product that I have available in my store, about the U.S. Constitution. You can find that product here:

FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON – “Apartheid and Segregation”

by Unitedtoteach

6th – 12th Grade

These civil rights battles occurred on two different continents, yet they have many similarities. While one civil rights battle occurred under “apartheid” in South Africa, another civil rights battle occurred under “segregation” in the United States. In this activity, students use their book and internet research skills to find out the similarities and histories behind the civil rights battles that took place on two separate continents. How were people’s voting, speech, housing, education and transportation rights infringed? Have rights been improved in recent years? Students answer these questions through this activity. While there is an “answer key” included, answers will vary.

For some of us, this is a joyful time, but there are many who are alone, and unhappy.  Some have no money to buy gifts and others are out in the cold with no homes.  It breaks my heart realizing that some people feel alienated from their families which can lead to depression and in extreme cases, suicide. Our kiddos aren’t immune, they see what’s going on and may not know how to deal.
