These fantastic ‘first week of school homework sheets’ are perfect for getting to know your new class and their families a little better!

I have never failed to be amazed at the amount of new information I learn from these sheets – it’s always interesting to compare the child’s sheet, with their parents and also their previous teacher’s reports. This pack contains:

• STUDENT SHEET (1 page) with sections to complete about their family, pets, favorite foods, games and sports; how confident they feel about different subject areas; what they like to do when they’re not at school + things they find tricky at school.

• CAREGIVER SHEET (2 pages) with sections to complete about their child’s strengths and weaknesses; skills they have that could be utilized within the classroom; any cultural or religious beliefs the teacher should be aware of; languages spoken at home; passions and talents their child has outside of school; health issues + more.

Following written directions is a crucial concept for students. Sometimes they get so distracted by the end goal of a project they are creating, or even by what they are learning, that they forget to focus on reading and following the directions carefully. This often results in them getting a lower grade than they should, or them not being able to display what they truly know about a subject. This assignment reminds them of the importance of reading every word carefully in a set of directions.

Students will carefully follow a set of written directions to complete a task and create an exact design on a page. Then, they will trade papers with a partner, and the teacher will lead the class through grading the assignment on the rubric, checking to see that everyone followed the directions carefully. They will each instantly see how well they did, and questions are provided for the teacher to lead the class in a thorough discussion about the importance of following written directions.

This activity is great to do at the beginning of the school year to set expectations or anytime the students need a reminder to follow directions carefully. Throughout the year if they are falling into bad habits, you may be able to refer back to this activity to jog their memory, or repeat the activity at anytime.

Get Ready for School! Math Game Freebie

This is a 2 player game. Each player takes a game board (a backpack). 1, 2, or 3 dice are needed for this game. For younger students, roll one die and place the correct number of school supplies on their backpack. Older students can roll 2 or 3 die and add the numbers together to get the number of school supplies they should take. When all of the supplies are gone, the students count the school supplies on their game board. The player with the most supplies wins. Directions for a subtraction game are also included.

Common Core Standards:
K.CC.1 Count to 100 by ones and tens.
K.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
K.CC.5 Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
K.CC.6 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g./ by using matching and counting strategies. (Include groups with up to 10 objects.)
1.OA.3 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.
1.OA.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction
1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

Know that awkward moment when you’ve finish a lecture early, all questions have been answered, and there’s still – yikes! – 10 minutes left in the period? Or do you have one of those classes that seems to finish everything about 15 minutes earlier than all of your other sections?

The solution is to keep ‘em busy until the end of the hour with fun and meaningful activities. This handy “Word ADDiction” print-and-teach worksheet was built to help fill all available class time. The handout can be used as an in-class or homework assignment, substitute teacher materials, or game/contest sheet. A completed example is also included for teacher and student reference.

As a game, place students in teams of two or three and give one sheet to each team. Then, announce the number you have chosen (I just pick a number between 50 and 100, but you could use a random number generator app to build more game show-style drama) and the amount of time (anywhere from 5 to 12 minutes) you’re giving teams to work on their answers. You could announce that the team with the highest number of words will win the sole prize or, even better, announce that any team finding more than, say, six words that meet the target number will win an extra credit point/a piece of candy/homework pass/whatever.

Each year as you add projects, papers, problem sets, art, programs, etc. that go above and beyond the expectations set forth, you will be creating a treasure trove for both parents and students who come into your classroom.

To create a Hall of Fame, simply print and cut out out the banner letters in this packet and put them up on an an empty wall or bookcase. Then begin adding the wonderful creations of your students. Over the years you will create something truly special.

Here I made a couple of things that you can use for your classroom on the first week of school to review numbers 1-10. The BEST part it’s FREE!!!
I have made number posters for you to hang in your room or to make a number flip chart for the math center.
I have also made a game in which students can match the number word and add jelly beans to the jar to represent that number.
I also made an emergent reader for students to review their numbers that first week of school.

About this resource :
This free cooperative learning activity has students practice basic operations with fractions while playing a game.

How to play :
Students are given one or two step fraction problem to solve. Only simple problems are included, there are no word problems in this resource. The person in the “hot seat” is in the back of the group and must solve the problem on a white board. They pass up their answer – and each group member must agree before the board can be passed all the way to the front. A great way to practice math and add in a little competition in your classroom!
