You can also hook your device up to your smartboard for the whole class to view.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Wild About Animals Mini Research Pack – Common Core Research Pack”

by Kyp McLaren

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Wild About Animals Mini Research Pack

What’s Included in This Packet:

Activities to do with the 2 different farm animals

“I can describe…” Map for each animal
“Have, Can, Are” Maps for each animal
Clipboard Page for each animal

How to use this research packet:

Begin by letting students choose an animal they want to
research. You could let students work in partners or groups, or each have their own animal.

Let students research their animal by reading books, magazines or newspapers (such as Scholastic, Time for Kids, etc.) about their creature. They could also search for information on the internet and/or by asking family members or friends.

After students have researched their creature you could begin with the “I can describe…” page and/or the “Can, Have, Are” map to make a quick list of things about their creature. These two pages will be helpful when the child begins to write their report about their creature. I would print these off and have available for all of your little researchers. (Just as a note, by this time of year my kindergarteners have had many experiences with these 2 types of maps and understand how to fill them in.)

The clipboard research page can be used for younger writers to share the information they gathered about their animal. I have also included a different format of research pages for older students.

My little guys are always very excited to share their research. You could let each student or group present their information to the class.

You might choose to collect all of their research reports and make a class book. If so, you will find a colored book cover for just this purpose included with this packet.

Have fun researching all of the different animals and helping your little people become researchers and scientists!

Directions for a booklet, copy front and back. Then staple in the middle and fold over. No need for cutting!

FREE MATH LESSON – “Counting Coins Made Easy! (Sample Pages)”

by Nicole Rios

1st – 3rd Grade

Counting Coins Made Easy

Are your students having a difficult time with counting coins? The Magic Money method has worked for me for the last 9 years of teaching money to 1st and 2nd graders. This download includes:

– a chart that students might place in their homework/classroom folders with realistic, dual-sided pictures of each coin, coin values, a chant for each coin, and the placement of the dots that will aid them in counting the coins.

– a one-sheet parent explanation of how the Magic Money system works, and how to use it to help their child become successful at counting coins at home

– a hundred chart that specifically aids children in becoming fluent at counting by 5’s (a necessary sub-skill for using this method)

-a coin counting worksheet sample with answer key

-a sample word problem page

This method will work for the vast majority of your students. Don’t worry about them relying on the dots. With time, they will begin to chunk larger values together until they are counting coins in a more traditional way.

If you find this download helpful, this product is part of a larger download “Counting Coins Made Easy with Differentiated Materials” that you can find HERE.

I also offer an ActivInspire flipchart to accompany these learning materials HERE.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Magic E”

by Miss Jenny and Edutunes

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Magic E

“Magic E” Song FREEBIE: “That Magic E” / Common Core – Aligned

I wrote “That Magic E” to help my students understand how short vowel words can transform into long vowel words. Use this song as a daily commercial in your K-2 classroom. Invite children to read as they sing. Feel free to copy and paste the lyrics below for your students. Note that you may want to add short and long vowel symbols, and make the “magic e’s” bold.

That Magic E

Copyright 1999, 2014 Jennifer Fixman Kramer. All Rights Reserved.

That magic e, that magic e,
It changes so many words, you see:

At, ate,
Mate, mate,
Can, cane,
Plan, plane,

Bit, bite,
Quit, quite,
Fin, fine,
Pin, pine,

Not, note,
Tot, tote,
Hop, hope,
Mop, mope,

That magic e, that magic e,
It changes so many words, you see.

That magic e, changes words you see,

From at to ate, a to a,
From pet to Pete, e to e,
From bit to bite, i to i,
From not to note, o to o,

From cut to cute, u to u,
That magic e,
You know what it can do,
It makes the short vowels sound so long,
And that is the topic of this song.

That magic e, that magic e,
It changes so many words, you see,

At, ate,
Mate, mate,
Can, cane,
Plan, plane,

Bit, bite,
Quit, quite,
Fin, fine,
Pin, pine,

Not, note,
Tot, tote,
Hop, hope,
Mop, mope,

That magic e, that magic e
It changes so many words, you see.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE Dolch Sight Word Primer UNO Card Game”

by Aunt Minty

Pre-Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Dolch Sight Word Primer UNO Card Game

Everyone loves to play UNO and here is a way students can practice their Dolch primer sight words while having fun. My students LOVE to play this game. They are having so much fun playing they don’t realize they are learning! The game is designed for 2-4 players. Simply print each page off on red, blue, yellow, green, and orange card stock or construction paper, laminate the pages, then cut the words apart.

The game is just like UNO but instead of matching numbers on the cards they have to match the words on the cards. They also have to read the words on the card they are discarding.

LANGUAGE ARTS – “Scooping Words with Two Closed Syllable”

Grades K-3

by Reading on Strawberry Lane

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.

Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of polish, we would clap out ‘pol’ and ‘ish,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘l’ and ‘i’ in the word ‘pol/ish.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: p o l i s h. This way not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of a misplaced letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables.

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice scooping words with two closed syllables.

Simply print and cut along the guidelines. One idea is to print on card stock or on colored paper. Laminate and use them again and again and keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

This reading packet provides 23 word lists of the final stable syllable type words. Also, a master list of all the words is included as a quick reference. A final stable consonant is one of the six types of syllables in reading. Each list in this unit includes words using all the vowels with a final stable consonant. Reading will become more manageable for students once they understand syllable types. Download my free alphabet cards. Using these cards will give students another strategy to help them decode and encode words. These ready-made word lists can be used in the multiple ways:
• as a source to help you in create your own reading and spelling activities
• for ABC order
• to complete word sorts
• develop more accurate and fluent readers
• read words for homework
• use for spelling lists
• quick reading assessments
• practice and re-teach reading skills
• supplement general education curriculum
• compare and contrast with other syllable types
• use at a word work station
• print as a student booklet by clicking print, printer properties, and booklet.

Fifty percent of our English language is closed syllable type words. Once a student learns this syllable type, they have a great foundation upon which to build. So it is a well worth our efforts to invest our time teaching this syllable type if we are going to have successful readers.I created this packet for my students to have fun learning closed syllable type words. There are 6 syllable types, and closed syllable is the most basic type to teach. There are multiple word lists in the unit, ‘Reading Closed Syllables.’ This reading unit provides 158 word lists of the closed syllable type words. Also, a master list of all the words is included as a quick reference. The lists in this unit include words spelled using each vowel in conjunction with common phonograms. These lists of words will help students recognize the common patterns seen in closed syllables. Also, reading will become more manageable for students once they understand the different syllable types.

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.
