These labels are for streamlining your notes as you observe students during math workshop (or any time). During the class, you can jot down the student’s name, and then use the checklist to help save time in writing down a note. At the end of the day (or week) you can transfer the sticker to an index card for each student (as shown in the picture), a student folder, or s student binder. The labels come in 3 different forms (as shown in the preview).

It sounds very idealistic to say this, but it’s true. From personal experience, I assure you that simplifying your rules will simplify your life.

At the beginning of the school year, when it’s time to introduce the class rules I show students this poster and read the three words. Then, using the Socratic method of questioning I go through the rules one by one and discuss the implications of those rules (which is the reason you don’t need many.)

Free Boneyard Numbers Game

Looking for a fun game involving dominoes and the order of operations? 
Have you ever used dominoes in your classroom? Dominoes are one of those versatile tools
that have many purposes. Dominoes are generally not a standard math tool, but
they are great to have laying around. If you don’t have any in your classroom,
you can pick-up a cheap set at the dollar store.
The activity I am sharing with you today is called “Boneyard Numbers.” The basic idea is
that students turn over two dominoes and use the quantities on the dominoes to create
a number sentence that targets one of the uncovered quantities on the game
board.
 
The best thing about this activity is that it can be adapted to meet the needs of all
students! Whether a student just adds everything together or goes out on a limb
and tries to use all of the operations, the activity can meet his or her
ability level. “Boneyard Numbers” makes a great station and fast finisher
activity.

Free Open-Ended Questions for Accountable Math Talk

Looking for questions to support students during math talk? 
Questioning is one of the most powerful instructional strategies we can use in the classroom! In fact, NCTM’s Principles to Actions (2014) states that effective teachers use “purposeful questions to assess and advance students’ reasoning and sense-making about important mathematical ideas and relationships” (p. 35). However, creating an environment where students are able to respond to questions and effectively use math talk during a classroom discussion can be challenging. Many of our students do not know how to discuss their mathematical ideas and strategies using key math vocabulary and concepts. As teachers, we play an important role as we help students identify their thinking processes and build new knowledge by connecting to ideas and concepts that they already understand. Practice identifying the attributes of what, quantity, and color, while working on beginning writing skills and sentences structure.

Student will match the corresponding pictures to answer the questions – What? How Many? What Color? While simultaneously writing an I see sentence. (Ex: I see 3 green phones.)

This is a great way to have students work on answering questions, especially for students with minimal verbal skills, as well as getting students to use proper sentence structure.

Give your students birthday, moving away, or you are special booklets/cards from the class. There are cute birthday bracelets and matching cards/certificates from you! The birthday booklets/cards are a way to make a child feel special. There are colored and black & white copies. I give this out usually for the morning bellwork or during a transition.

As a bonus, for students moving away, this will give your remaining students closure with the student leaving. It will help the student that is leaving feel special. You can use the “You Are Special” booklets/cards for Kindness Week.

The way I use it…
Students enjoy this project! This is a 2-3 month project. Each class is different and each year is different; therefore, I can’t do everything the same each time I teach the same subject. I give each student a three pronged folder with the packet inside. As I scaffold and model the information to my students, I have students write in the due dates. I make this an at-school project and have students keep their research folder in a designated location. Also, you can choose themes for your project such as children’s authors, presidents, Native Americans, American Revolution historical figures, American heroes, African Americans, famous people/Americans, scientists/inventors, composers, or historical figures from your state. The choice is yours!

Looking for a number sense building, critical thinking activity? 
With the challenges of today’s math curriculum, we do not always have time for a consistent focus on critical thinking. Using tiling tasks in the classroom is one strategy that can offer you an opportunity to increase the critical thinking skills of your students. These tasks involve using number tiles, a set of numbered tiles 0-9, to complete a set of problems. Each tile belongs to one space and only one space. Students use their reasoning skills to complete the task cards. Tiling task cards also make great menu activities or fast finisher challenges.
