FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Class Compliment Book Freebie”

by Teaching in the Primary Grades

Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

As the school year drew to a close in my classroom, I was looking for a fun way for my students to continue to practice their writing skills while making a fun keepsake they could look back on in years to come and I came up with the idea of a compliment book!

This activity was perfect for my class at the end of the year but, it would also be great for any other time of the year when your class needs some team building.

After the students have finished decorating their books its time to let the fun begin. Each student opens their book to the first blank page and places a pencil next to their book. At my signal, the students slide one chair to the right and write a compliment to their classmate. Students continue moving to the right until they have had the chance to write in each of their classmate’s books. Make sure that your students know that more than one person can write a compliment on each page to avoid using tons of paper!

I am so glad I did this with my class. It was so cute to watch the smiles grow on each student’s face as they were able to read the sweet compliments the received from each of their classmates.

Surviving the Last Weeks of School

By: Shametria L. Routt, The Routty Math Teacher

It’s April!! For me this month means a time for celebration—it’s my birth month. For many Americans though, it’s a most dreaded time of the year because it means that they have to send a very large check to the government for the amount of tax debt they did not pay during the 12 months of 2016. For teachers, it means we are entering the home stretch and the last weeks of the school year. Now, any parents who have happened upon this blog post are saying—why is this a problem. But, as teachers, we all know that:

Last weeks of the school year = Crazy time!

Managing student engagement and behaviors at the end of the school year can be a challenge for even our most experienced teachers. Trust me when I say that keeping them engaged is how to win the battle. The more engaged they are in tasks that are both developmentally appropriate and challenging, the less off-task behavior they will display.

Having been an educator for the past 14 years and experiencing 14 end-of-year crazy times, I would like to share some of my favorite problem solving and critical thinking strategies I used to keep my students engaged during the last weeks of the school year.

Read more here.

FREE MISC. LESSON – “FREEBIE: Brain Sprinkles and Shhhh Spray Labels”

by Primary Paradise

Pre-Kindergarten – 5th Grade

Sometimes our students could use a little magic in their lives. Use these two labels to create some magical Brain Sprinkles and Shhhh Spray.

Brain Sprinkles are used to give a student’s brain an extra boost before a test, when they’re stuck on a problem, or when they’re just having a rough day. Just shake some brain sprinkles over their head and watch the light bulb moment happen! (A lot of time when when students are stuck, they really need to just relax and destress. Brain Sprinkles are a fun way to make students smile and relax a bit which helps get their creative juices flowing again)

Shhhh Spray is used to help students who need a magical reminder to quiet down. This can be used before a test, before walking in the hallway, or any time. Just spray some Shhhh Spray in the air and watch the voice turn off magically! I don’t spray Shhhh Spray at a specific student, rather I freshen the air with it like air freshener. (Note: make sure the spray bottle is cleaned our and empty)

I like to use both Brain Sprinkles and Shhhh Spray right before a big test.

I hope you enjoy!

Product Description

Je fais un oiseau – from my Learn to Read series features 33 flashcards to help students learn French vocabulary. The cards teach students the different sounds as well as vocabulary with pictures to facilitate the reading process.

The following vocabulary words are included:

– Oiseau, je, fais, un, voici, aile, use of l’, œil, va, ici, le, bec, queue, la.

The cards use the words in various different contexts to reinforce learning and reading. In addition, half of the flashcards have the picture to introduce the words, and the other half only have the words to help students read more independently.

This package also contains 3 writing exercises where students can rewrite the words they saw on the flashcards. They must rewrite the sentences twice: once tracing the words, and the next, copying the sentences. Make sure to reinforce the use of the capital letter and period at the end of the sentence.

It’s teaching made easy!

Social Skills All Year

by Kathy Babineau

Grades KG – 5th

This kit contains 240 cards covering seasonal scenarios and topics. For each month of the year (including summer months), there are 4 Topic Talker cards, 4 Role Playing cards, 4 Facial Expression/Body Language cards, 4 Problem Solver cards, and 4 Perspective Taker cards, for a total of 20 cards for each month of the year. Cards are simply marked with the month of the year, but they can also be mixed and matched throughout the year if you would rather not focus on themes.

The Topic Talker Cards offer suggested topics of conversation, many of which are related to timely topics and holidays. Some other generic school based topics have been included in order to be sensitive to students who may not observe particular holidays. These topic talker cards are helpful for students who are trying to work to maintain on-topic exchanges with peers, addressing attention to conversation and even general expressive and receptive language.

The Role Playing cards also address many timely topics. When using the Role Playing cards, I like to have multiple teams role play the same scenes, because there may be several correct ways to “act out” the situation. It is also fun sometimes to role play the situation in an inappropriate way and then discuss why it may be hurtful or inappropriate or offensive. Be sure to brainstorm and discuss how body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice and word choice are all important to communication.

The Facial Expression/Body Language cards are fun to use to think about and practice ways that we communicate with our faces and our bodies.

The Problem Solver cards offer students opportunities to think about social situations, analyze the problem and generate practical solutions. There is not always just one correct answer to these problems.

The Perspective Taker cards encourage students to put themselves in a situation or in someone else’s shoes and decide how they might feel.

To use this kit, simply print out all sheets and then cut apart and laminate (optional) the cards, and you are good to go! They are all in black and white (except the cover page) to go easy on the color copying budget.

I hope you like this and find it helpful when working with your students!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “BEE a Reader! Bookmarks”

by Growing Smart Readers

Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

Bee a Reader! Bookmarks

Mini Word Wall
Kids need to have sight words/frequent words handy for writing, and to practice fluency.

What makes these unique is that these bookmarks double as a mini word wall—handy for writing and spelling, and can also be perfect for a quick fluency drill.

There are three sets of instant words lists.

Select cover and list of words
~When printing, choose the cover slide number and the slide number for the list you want for your kids.
~Then print back-to-back, at landscape orientation setting.

You may wish to laminate for a long-lasting reference, since these words can be kept handy for journal writing, as well as in readers’ notebooks. Kids can keep a bookmark in their folders.

Send these home for drill practice–for reading and writing. Or, keep them handy on your bookshelf for your readers.

Print, punch a hole, and personalize with ribbon, string, beads, etc.

Thanks for your interest. Have fun with these!

Please let me know how these worked out for your kiddos!

Poppies, Poetry & Critical Thinking with Georgia O’Keefe

It had been a long week- two nights of student-led conferences, a teacher evaluation meeting with my administrator. Add finishing report cards to that mix and preparation for MStep, and I had survived the perfect storm.  Needless to say, we were tired.  I needed to do something that would make our hearts sing.  My students needed it, too!

So, I introduced my third and fourth graders to Georgia’s paintings.  Georgia O’Keefe makes my heart sing.  I began by sharing a short mini-biography I had authored, and then I read aloud My Name is Georgia by Jeanette Winter.  This delightful picture book is a biography of Georgia O’Keefe. From the time she was just a young girl, Georgia O’Keeffe saw the world differently than those around her.  While other girls wore braids and played with toys, Georgia practiced her drawing.  She let her hair flow free.  Georgia followed her love of art throughout her life. This book shows how Georgia followed her dream of becoming an artist and shared her unique vision of the world.

who respond to <b>georgia</b> in hawaii may then pick up <b>my name is georgia</b> ...
After sharing the book and some examples of O’Keefe’s art I found on the internet, I showed my students some photographs of natural subjects. The photos were close ups, not unlike Georgia’s flowers.  We went through each photo, using the visible thinking move “See-Think-Wonder.”  Using this thinking routine elevated my student’s responses.    Using this routine, I first asked students to respond orally to a photo selected by me. I recorded their responses on our class response chart paper. Then I showed the other photographs and had students use “See-Think-Wonder” to discuss the photos in their small table groups.  Finally, students used a “See-Think-Wonder” graphic organizer to reflect on one of the photographs of their choosing.

We got “up close and personal” with photography.

Later in the afternoon, we worked with our chosen photograph again.  I modeled how to do a quick write. I viewed my photograph of yellow daffodils, and wrote single words and phrases that came into my head as I viewed it.  I did a lot of thinking aloud for them, so they could hear my stream of thought. Following my lead, students wrote their own quick writes using the quick write page I provided.   Then, I introduced the Pantoum poetry form.  This form of poetry comes from Malaysia and employs a series of repeated lines.  It’s perfect for when you want to emphasize an idea or image in your writing.

Again, I modeled taking my quick write ideas and using them to write the lines of my poem. Students followed suit, trying it on their own.  My poem is below:

Spring Daffodils

In mysterious canyons of sunshine and butter,
I follow the secret pathways,
Past bends and turns
on a ruffled and rippled river.

I follow the secret pathways,
Dripping with sunlit honey.
On a ruffled and rippled river,
I ride the tumultuous waves of spring.

Dripping with sunlit honey,
Alive with bumble and buzz,
I ride the tumultuous waves of spring,
Swimming in its yellow currents.

Alive with bumble and buzz,
Past bends and turns,
Swimming in its yellow currents
In mysterious canyons of sunshine and butter.

Later in the afternoon, we made our own poppies using templates I created and common classroom materials like scissors, glue, and construction paper.   The pictures below show the results.  After our crazy week, it was remarkable to listen to my students as they wrote.  It was the quietest they had been all week.  Even more remarkable, my boys were so earnest as they wrote their poems about Georgia’s flowers and bones.  It was a Friday well spent.
I have to say, this creative writing, reading, and art activity was the perfect way to counterbalance the stresses of standardized test and student-led conferences preparation.  You can find it for your own classroom by clicking the graphic below.  It has everything you need to be ready for April’s Poetry Month.
