Rachel’s Monster

By Gini Musmanno of Reading Spotlight

The first time I saw Rachel she was standing in the hall near her first-grade classroom door. Her eyes met mine, but she then turned her face to the wall. I did not know at that time she would become one of my first primary grade remedial reading students, nor did I know that she was repeating first grade–this is a story about Rachel’s monster.

“BOO” to Fractions? Recognizing Equivalent Fractions

By Vicky Rauch of Scipi

Math requires constant practice – something most of my students dread doing. I can find many “drill and kill” activities, but they tend to do just that, drill those who don’t need it and kill those who already know how to do it. So to drill and “thrill”, I created fractional word puzzles. The one for October is Halloween Fraction Riddles.

Cursive vs. Keyboard – an interesting debate

By Renee Heiss of All-American Teacher Tools

There have been many debates over the centuries regarding the education of our children. From integrated schools to No Child Left Behind and Common Core curricula, teachers have had to deal with a plethora of revisions to their daily lessons. However, hidden beneath the mandated revisions is a new discussion that centers around cursive writing vs. keyboard entry for student assignments. How can you teach your little learners to master a keyboard?

The first is for younger children. Have the students write what they are thankful for within the blank spaces of the cornucopia. They may also color the picture.

The second cornucopia is more suitable for older children or those that are pretty adept at printing. The cornucopia on this page is outlined in very light gray. Have students use these as writing lines to record what they are thankful for. The final result will be a word-picture.

Spelling Flip Book

Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flipbook when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

Behavior Problems Got You Down?

Behavior Problems Got You Down? Have you been struggling
 with Johnny or Sally since the first day of school? Do you rack your brain trying to come up with some creative ways to turn their unacceptable behavior around?  Let’s face it, some kids will always get under your skin, but you’re the teacher, you’re tough and you can deal with it.

Back to Basics: 3 Tried & True Place Value Games

By Kathie Yonemura of Tried and True Teaching Tools

And we’re back! We just finished our fifth week of school(!) and it looks different. It feels different. But it is SO good to be back in person, masks and all. It’s a tricky balance of remembering “how I used to teach in person” and “what worked during distance learning” and “how do I keep the curriculum rigorous, while planning for some students to inevitably be quarantined at some point and not miss instruction”. Luckily, here are some tried & true math lessons and activities that work well for the beginning of the year.

Free Group and Skit Evaluation Rubric

Description

Group work is always tricky to evaluate because there is so much going on. In addition, as educators, we are required to give detailed feedback on students’ performances.

I created this FREE document to make the teacher’s job easier, and to allow students to be responsible for their success as well.

Self-evaluation grids are a great way to guide students in their evaluations. Students will know exactly what is expected of them and will be made responsible for their success. This package can also easily be changed to be used as peer evaluations.

This self-evaluation grid will help students as well as teachers to assess students’ group work. When students use this grid to assess their work, there are no surprises when they receive their final mark. This grid, in particular, allows the students to become organized and responsible for their individual parts.

These self-evaluation grids are also very helpful to teachers:

❒ Helps the teacher justify the final mark;

❒ Helps to identify students’ weaknesses and strengths;

❒ Helps parents and students better understand the task required;

❒ Helps teachers create rubrics for the final evaluation.

Because of formatting issues, this package was created in a PDF document, but I can easily email you a Word file to be easily modified and changed according to the individual teacher’s needs.

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Free Trauma Informed School Counseling Confidentiality Posters”

by Whimsy in School Counseling
Kindergarten – 12th Grade

Confidentiality posters for your office! Free, snazzy, psychoeducational Confidentiality Posters for the Trauma Informed School Counselor. Because everything can be a learning moment, from the passive learning from your office decor to the active learning students encounter in your office and their classrooms. Various backgrounds, including dinosaurs, kittens, tribal print, unicorns, glitter, rainbow, chalkboard, tie-dye, galaxy print, and more!

Confidentiality posters are quite literally a necessity for school counselors, but that doesn’t mean they have to be scary or boring! In true school counseling style these confidentiality statements build on the standard exclusions to become an opportunity for education.

Each poster says this or a variation of this:

Confidentiality

(or, the rules about what stays between us and what doesn’t.)

Chats with the door open or in the hallway aren’t confidential… Other people can hear us!

When the door is closed everything you tell me stays between us unless…

1. You tell me you are going to hurt yourself.

2. You tell me someone is going to hurt you.

3. You tell me you are going to hurt someone.

4. There is a medical emergency.

5. You tell me something like “I can’t see the board in math!” I would ask the math teacher to move you to the front row and ask the school nurse to check your eyesight.

In other words, I only need to share the details of what we talk about if your wellbeing is at stake. I do this because I care and because I am legally bound to do so. I will always do my best to let you know before I share anything we talk about so it isn’t a surprise to you.

Hopefully, normal and safe school operations will be returning this fall, but will your students be wilting at their desks before long? This a simple reminder that a constant requirement for kids to sit in desks quietly hour after hour will be a difficult challenge for all, and actual torment for some.

How Many Classroom Rules Do You Need?

By Vicky Rauch of Scipi

Now that most of us are getting geared up for a new school year, it’s time to think about what classroom rules need to be established. I would suggest making a few general rules that are clear and understandable since being too specific often leads to complicated, wordy rules that might cover every possible situation.   ✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿✿
