<strong>The way I use this resource…</strong>
In writing, I scaffold and model information to my students. Each class is different and each year is different; therefore, I can’t do everything the same each time I teach the same subject. I start with the basic rubric and introduce 1-3 new concepts each essay. Once I introduce a concept, I hold students accountable for the concepts I taught. If it appears that the majority of the class does not understand the concept, I do not hold them accountable and I reteach the concept. I try not to stifle their creativity by focusing on spelling, capitalization, and punctuation during the first two terms of school depending on the class. I also can easily use the 6 traits of writing with the rubrics. Make sure a topic that is relevant, relatable, and the reasons are researchable is chosen.
Then I introduce the peer editing checklist. I have students pair up and exchange papers. I have clipboards students can use while they sit around the room for this activity. It’s important for you to model for the students how to peer edit. Many times students just want to be nice and not give feedback. However, this is a great opportunity for students to read each others essays and learn from each other. I try not to let the same students peer edit with each other every time in order for students to view a variety of styles over the school year. Depending on the class, I may start the school year off by requiring a 5 paragraph essay and work our way up to a 7 paragraph.
Happy Teaching!

Speech Therapy; Grades K-4

Using storybooks in speech and language therapy allows us to target meaningful vocabulary and language objectives within the context of literature and well-constructed narratives. This book, “They All Saw A CAT” is great for building descriptive language skills and talking about point of view. It is a lot of fun to help kids see how the cat is viewed by each of the other animals – bigger, smaller, mean, furry.  Included in the project is a lesson plan for multiple days’ worth of activities. Use the book for up to 4 sessions; Matching cards for playing a Memory-type game; match the animal with how it saw the cat; 3 matching worksheets for matching the animal with how it saw the cat; Mix & match puzzles; and much more.  See the full details on the product page!

All Subject Areas; Grades PreK-6

Integrate geography, math, and writing activities using Edith Baer’s book, This Is the Way We Go to SchoolStudents learn about the different ways kids around the world go to school, and use a world map to locate each place. The class creates a tally chart and a bar graph to show how they all get to school. Questions for analyzing the data are included. Students complete a descriptive writing prompt sharing a new way to get to school – fun for sharing and/or making a class book.

By Kamp Kindergarten

ELA/Reading; Grades K-1

Get inviting literacy centers for your learners to practice reading color words. There are 80 clothespin clip cards with a color word and a choice of three pictures printed on each card. Learners read the word and clip a clothespin to the picture of that color object. You may use all the cards, select the cards that address specific color words for your lesson, or select the cards that best meet your learners’ needs. These cards are great for morning tubs, early finishers, literacy centers, and take home practice. The following color words are addressed in this packet: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, brown, black, pink, and white. Please Note: How colors print often varies on individual printers. The free preview has a printer test page included that has a sample of each color from the graphics used in the packet. You may download the preview and print that page to determine how the colors will print on your printer before purchasing the resource.

The way I use this resource…
Make sure you choose a topic that is relevant, relatable, and the reasons are researchable.
When filling out the rubric, simply circle the number(s) the student(s) earned. The outline and graphic organizers are an optional teaching tool to help the students organize their thoughts. Depending on the class, I may start the school year off by requiring a 3 paragraph essay then work our way up to a 7 paragraph essay.
Next, I introduce the peer editing checklist.
Additionally, there is a student self-assessment included. This is a good tool to help students understand how they are being graded and reflect on his or her own writing. The self-assessment should be completed after the peer editing checklist if it was purchased.
When the class is ready (score 80% or higher), I introduce the advanced rubric to step it up a notch. The thesis statement is used in the advanced rubric. If needed, students can still use the basic rubric for their level for individualized instruction.
Furthermore, there are 18 rubrics in all (basic and advanced) for 3, 4, 5, and 7 paragraph essays. You can choose with or without extra credit. The way I use the parent signature for extra credit is that the parent can sign anywhere on the paper or rubric. I let parents and students know to look over their child’s paper and write directly on the final copy to fix any errors. There is only one rubric in basic and advanced that has the parent signature because it may not work for your classroom.
Finally, you are able to print front and back! Then you can cut them in half to save on paper. For example, pages 12 and 13 are the same rubric. Simply print it from your computer or printer as two-sided. If this does not work for you, print the first rubric for a full page rubric.
Happy Teaching!
Sally

Thesis Writing Poster

Product Description

As any English teacher can tell you, the thesis statement is the most important part of the essay. It defines the arguments and orients the reader. Unfortunately, many students have difficulty with the thesis statement. This is why I have created the “7 Steps to Writing an Effective Thesis Statement” poster.

The poster is a step by step guide on how to write the thesis starting with selecting a topic the student understands and walks them through the process until the end.

I am making the poster available in different formats for facility of use in the classroom:

– The first format measures 70 cm (27.6 inches) (easy printing) PDF
– The second format measure 97 cm (38.2) – information can be more easily read from further away (easy printing) PDF
– One smaller poster PDF
– An image format JPEG

Superhero Theme Behavior Calendars 2017-2018 (Editable) for Classroom Management

Superhero Theme Behavior Calendars 2017-2018 (Editable) for Classroom Management

This set contains EDITABLE calendars for the 2017-2018 school year (August 2017-July 2018) AND templates for future years! Each calendar has editable behavior codes, a place to enter your e-mail address, and label the day if needed. The calendars are in color, black and white, and with regular font. The calendars show Monday-Friday only so it does not confuse the students with weekends.

The behavior calendar provides daily behavior documentation and opens communication with parents. I have my students color in the behavior earned for the day in the square at the end of the day.

Some teachers like the monthly calendar and others prefer to hand out a new calendar on a Monday instead of mid-week. Choose between the monthly calendar or a monthly calendar that is Monday – Friday.

5 Best Takeaways from NCTM’s Annual Conference

Welcome Back Friends!

Last month I was so excited to attend this year’s annual NCTM math conference. The best part—it was in San Antonio, Texas (about 100 miles from me)! Now, while some of you are thinking, “What’s so exciting about that,” I’m thinking 1.) It was a mini-vacay in the middle of the spring semester (Raise your hand if you could use one of those!); 2.) I got the chance to spend time with professors and colleagues who I hardly ever see; 3.) I got to share the same space with some of my math idols. Yes, I totally know that I am a math geek, but I thought that’s what you loved most about me!!

All kidding aside, attending this conference is a big deal. It’s an opportunity to learn from math teachers and authors across the country. Sessions are filled with presentations by people like Jo Boaler, Dan Meyer, Graham Fletcher, Kathy Richardson, and many others. It’s also a unique experience and a chance to hear what other teachers are doing to create strong mathematicians from states across the nation. With this in mind, I want to take this opportunity to share five of my biggest take-a-ways with you.

LANGUAGE ARTS IDEAS – Fun Easter phrasing and fluency activities!

Copyright: denisnata / 123RF Stock Photo[/caption]

Easter is a great time to have fun with phrasing and fluency with early readers. Grab your bunny ears and check these out!

Use poetry, music and movement!

Remember the Hokey-Pokey song? Years ago I rewrote it into The Bunny Hop for my Kindergarten students. It works particularly well if modeled and students are given the opportunity to echo it back the first few times before giving them a paper with the text (to color – you’ve got to do the actions!):

Click here to grab it free!
(Black and white version included with it – ideal for poetry folders!)
Bunny ear construction is off the charts in the craft center when this song is in season – be ye warned! Everyone wants to be the bossy bunny who gets to say, “Stop!”
Seize teachable moments to model and emphasize phrasing

Certain phrases just belong together, don’t they? All about the seems to be one such phrase.

When Meghan Trainor was singing I’m All About the Bass every time I turned on the radio in 2014,  there was no getting it out of my head.  This Fun, Fluency Reader version practically wrote itself as I drove in to school listening to Trainor’s voice every day.

My students knew the tune instantly. I modeled the first read to them, and we practiced a few phrases in isolation before it was fluent and perhaps a little too fun…

There is a twist on a familiar Fairy Tale in this book that made the kids laugh (but humor is a topic for another day…).

Limitation of liability: It’s all about the Eggs is not recommended for those who are prone to getting songs stuck in their head or with one last nerve.

Encourage oral language beyond one word.

Encourage kids to speak in sentences and phrases by asking questions and modeling answers. Kids mimic the adults in their lives (cringe – I’ve heard my own phrases from the mouths of babes a few too many times, have you?). When hunting for an Easter Egg, asking ‘Where is it?’ may elicit a reply of ‘there’ from a little one, but an adult can follow with the modeling of a phrase or phrases, for example: “Oh, yes, it’s under the chair’ for a gentle teachable moment.

While teaching special education to a student with prepositional language goals on an IEP, one of my students did have Easter egg hunts in my resource room to ‘practice’ for Easter.

What are some of your favorite phrasing and fluency boosters?

Happy Easter everyone!

Is Vacation Over Already?

By Deann Marin of Socrates Lantern

I don’t know about you, but at one time, it was a real downer for me to return to school after vacation. Stress was my middle name, I’d spend time worrying what I was going to teach, wondering about the lessons I’d have to reteach and thinking about that parent meeting scheduled after vacation. I’d get really bummed out the day before until I learned a few tricks I’d like to share.
