FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “S’Mores 1st Grade Dolch Card Game”

by Dana Designs

3rd – 6th Grade

FREEBIE ALERT!

If you’re sick of going through boring flashcards, this is a great resource that is quick to play and easy to learn. Students can practice Dolch sight words within the context of a card game. Because each card is labeled with the grade level, it is easy to switch cards from different levels in and out. In this file, you get a page with all the directions (as listed below) and four pages of playing cards that print 12 per page.

To Win: Be the player with the most s’mores at the end of the game.

To Play:
Shuffle cards and place in a single pile face down.
On each player’s turn, choose the top card and read the word. Keep the card.
Continue play until all cards are picked up.
All players see how many complete s’mores they have made (a complete s’more is one of each card: chocolate, marshmallow, graham cracker, and fire).
The player with the highest number of complete s’mores wins.
In the event of a tie, the player with the highest number of words that begin with the letter t is the winner.

Other Ways to Play:
*The first card turned over is the wild card. Whatever type of card that is will be what players try to get the most of to win the game. (For example, if the first card is a marshmallow, then the player with the most marshmallows at the end of the deck wins).
*At the end of the deck, count the number of pairs of matching cards. Each pair counts as one point.
*Shuffle the deck and deal cards out (face down to each player). On each player’s turn, they flip their top card onto the pile and say the word. If the current word is the same card type as the one below it, the first person to say the word and slap the pile gets to take the cards. Continue play until one player has the entire deck. (Similar to playing Slap Jack).

Download more versions of this game to mix and match cards!

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Paragraph-Writing-Activity-in-conjunction-with-Frankenstein-2838019

Product Description

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

Very often, students have difficulty with the analysis process involved in literature. Where they not only have to analyse, but now have to apply their newfound skills to a well-developed paragraph, some students become overwhelmed with the process.

This particular activity will focus on both the analysis and writing a paragraph using the PEEL method.

Paragraph writing and analysis are two essential components in essay writing. To facilitate this process, I have created a lesson where students can become more comfortable with the revision process through modelling the proper steps from beginning to end. The lesson includes a modelling of the writing process from understanding the topic to the final draft. See preview for details

This lesson can only be used after students have read chapter 19 from the novel Frankenstein.

5 Best Takeaways from NCTM’s Annual Conference

Welcome Back Friends!

Last month I was so excited to attend this year’s annual NCTM math conference. The best part—it was in San Antonio, Texas (about 100 miles from me)! Now, while some of you are thinking, “What’s so exciting about that,” I’m thinking 1.) It was a mini-vacay in the middle of the spring semester (Raise your hand if you could use one of those!); 2.) I got the chance to spend time with professors and colleagues who I hardly ever see; 3.) I got to share the same space with some of my math idols. Yes, I totally know that I am a math geek, but I thought that’s what you loved most about me!!

All kidding aside, attending this conference is a big deal. It’s an opportunity to learn from math teachers and authors across the country. Sessions are filled with presentations by people like Jo Boaler, Dan Meyer, Graham Fletcher, Kathy Richardson, and many others. It’s also a unique experience and a chance to hear what other teachers are doing to create strong mathematicians from states across the nation. Free Classroom Rules Poster and Instructions

It sounds very idealistic to say this, but it’s true. From personal experience, I assure you that simplifying your rules will simplify your life.

At the beginning of the school year, when it’s time to introduce the class rules I show students this poster and read the three words. Then, using the Socratic method of questioning I go through the rules one by one and discuss the implications of those rules (which is the reason you don’t need many.)

Spelling Flip Book

Product Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flip book when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

Test Prep Tournaments & Centers For Any Grade & Any Subject

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Test-Prep-Tournaments-Centers-For-Any-Grade-Any-Subject-78992

Students have fun AND stay focused while they are reviewing for their state’s standardized tests, district tests, and classroom tests.

The 15 tournaments and 8 centers come with step-by-step directions, game boards, and game pieces in 119 pages.

The tournaments may be used for any grade and any subject, but you need to supply the questions you want your students to study. You may use your state’s released questions of past standardized tests, test prep booklets, previous district tests, or questions from your classroom textbooks. Go to TeachersPayTeachers.com and purchase task cards on a specific subject or standard you want to reinforce.

These tournaments work! In California, students are deemed Advanced, Proficient, Basic, Below Basic, or Far Below Basic on the state’s standardized tests. Last year, when comparing my students’ 2009 California Standards Test scores with me and how they had done the year before, one student went up three levels from Far Below Basic in second grade to Below Basic to Basic to Proficient with me in third grade. Three of my students went up two levels. Nine of my students went up one level. Three students stayed in their same level from second to third grade (one student was Proficient and stayed Proficient & two students were Advanced and stayed Advanced.) The final student in my class last year did not have a second grade score, but scored Advanced in my class. I receive similar test scores each year.

These tournaments are timeless! Even if your state changes the format of the standardized test, you can still use these tournaments to review the standards. Even if you change to a new grade or have to teach a different subject, you can adapt the tournaments to your new class.

The possibilities are endless! Change the rules of the game to meet the needs of your specific class. Make a copy of the “Race Car Game” and have two students play against each other with a set of questions in a learning center. Choose the particular tournament according to what you want to focus on. I use the “Math Field Day – Slow Version” Tournament when I want to give my students a longer time to solve math word problems in their teams. I use the “Math Field Day – Fast Version” Tournament when I want my students to work quickly and accurately on math computation problems.

Elementary students can review and practice their times tables, sight words, vocabulary definitions, and spelling words. Middle School and High School students can memorize important events in social studies or balance equations in chemistry.

I received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles Educational Partnership. I am a National Board Certified Teacher and attained a scaled score of 386 points (Teachers needed a scaled score of 275 points to become certified.)

I prepare my students for their state standardized tests in a very strategic way. You may want your school to purchase a LIFETIME school site license, so that all of the teachers at your school…and any new teachers…may use these tournaments and centers. “Test Prep Tournaments & Centers For Any Grade & Any Subject-SCHOOL SITE LICENSE” may be purchased at https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Test-Prep-Tournaments-Centers-For-Any-Grade-Any-Subject-SCHOOL-SITE-LICENSE-3111729

Product Description

This is a great way to teach students how to structure their essay properly.

The Three Paragraph Essay is a resource that is best used for novice essay writers. It is an excellent way to introduce the expository essay. The 2-page pdf document includes simple step-by-step instructions to teach students how to write an effective three paragraph essay.

I recommend using this material with students who are in grades 7-9. It is an efficient and simple way of learning how to write a proper introduction, a one paragraph development, and a conclusion that serves a purpose.
