Because it is important for a school newspaper to cover all of the clubs and activities a middle or high school offers, this FREE Beat Sheet presents a succinct way for journalism students to find story ideas they can develop. Sometimes the info is quite brief, i.e. an announcement of up-coming events, so it is summarized in a column set aside for that purpose. Other times, the information sparks ideas for a news or feature piece. The Beat Sheet is an excellent way for newspaper staffs to find ideas and to plan for the next issue. Also, it offers first year students a chance to write for the paper, insuring their desire to remain a part of the journalism scene throughout their high school careers.

Our students should learn about kindness and inclusion during character education and as part of cultural education in foreign language classes. This free activity based on Un Monstre à Paris is to be used to learn about some names (terms of endearment or insults) that are used in the movie, and to launch a discussion about name calling, and how it is respectful to use terms of endearment only in the right context.

The audience gathers for what they think will be a memorial service for the missionary fondly known as Uncle Buck but ends up trying to save Sadie McCrady (Buck’s niece) and themselves from being swindled by the unscrupulous pawnbroker Harry Sneed. Not only must they solve what ONE ITEM Sadie should choose for her inheritance but they must uncover who is the impostor is.
Plot is broken into 3 scenes. One before dinner, one between dinner and dessert and the last after dessert is served. A sample ending is provided in the event this is produced as a fund raiser for missions. It can be adapted for any occasion as best suits a producer’s individual situation.

Managing student engagement and behaviors at the end of the school year can be a challenge for even our most experienced teachers. The more engaged students are in tasks that are both developmentally appropriate and challenging, the less off-task behavior they will display. With that in mind, I would like to share some of my favorite problem solving and critical thinking strategies I use to keep my students engaged during the last weeks of the school year.

For many years, I too taught summer school. There are so many benefits to taking on this very important role, but I will admit that I was driven by the money! I also distinctly remember not wanting to spend all of my precious summer planning and crafting curriculum! That is why I created this unit bundle! Let my experiences do the work for you! What I have done is compile lessons from my curriculum that will most benefit the struggling reader and writer. I start summer school by teaching close reading strategies (which I call “talking to the text). Then I spend the remainder of summer school continuing to practice these strategies through every unit. The first few days of this unit bundle include detailed lesson plans to help you best support your students with these close reading strategies. If you’re sick of going through boring flashcards, this is a great resource that is quick to play and easy to learn. Students can practice Dolch sight words within the context of a card game. Because each card is labeled with the grade level, it is easy to switch cards from different levels in and out. In this file, you get a page with all the directions (as listed below) and four pages of playing cards that print 12 per page.
To Win: Be the player with the most s’mores at the end of the game.
To Play:
Shuffle cards and place in a single pile face down.
On each player’s turn, choose the top card and read the word. Keep the card.
Continue play until all cards are picked up.
All players see how many complete s’mores they have made (a complete s’more is one of each card: chocolate, marshmallow, graham cracker, and fire).
The player with the highest number of complete s’mores wins.
In the event of a tie, the player with the highest number of words that begin with the letter t is the winner.
Other Ways to Play:
*The first card turned over is the wild card. Whatever type of card that is will be what players try to get the most of to win the game. (For example, if the first card is a marshmallow, then the player with the most marshmallows at the end of the deck wins).
*At the end of the deck, count the number of pairs of matching cards. Each pair counts as one point.
*Shuffle the deck and deal cards out (face down to each player). On each player’s turn, they flip their top card onto the pile and say the word. If the current word is the same card type as the one below it, the first person to say the word and slap the pile gets to take the cards. Continue play until one player has the entire deck. (Similar to playing Slap Jack).
