So that being said, here is a little freebie I have put together for you. You may want to give it out to your little ones as a holiday gift or just use it in the classroom, however you choose to use it, I know your kiddos will have fun either way.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Holiday (Christmas) Shopping Math Activities- Rounding, Estimation, Percent”

by Keep Calm and Teach

4th – 7th Grade

christmas shopping math

FREE Christmas Math Activity– These are versions of fun, holiday shopping math activities for students who are learning about rounding, estimation, and percent (sales tax). The first activity is easier and includes practice with rounding and estimation. The second one is more difficult and includes practice with determining sales tax and total cost of an item. Both activities can be used in one class if differentiation is a goal or if students are able to do both. They could also be used in a math center.

These are authentic activities because the activities are real world situations. I can see this fitting into Common Core Math standards.

You will need to have store advertisements available (either paper or electronic online versions).

Perhaps not today. I would like to share with you my favorite read aloud story for this time of year which will allow you to target the test taking strategies, and with only a little extra time from your day, you can integrate a bit of social skills curriculum in too (but shhh… don’t tell the politicians, or school administrators.)

So Much to Be Thankful For

So Much to Be Thankful For!I can remember my grandmother sitting in her big rocking chair that was placed in her favorite spot, next to a picture window where she kept all of her plants. I would sit on her lap and she would sing about the beautiful autumn leaves dancing to the ground in their colorful dresses. I can’t remember the tune or the words, but that wonderful memory has always been vivid in my mind. as if it were yesterday. I’m so thankful for this experience.

I can remember standing on the front porch waiting for my mom to take me shopping downtown. I loved to shop with her. We used to go to a store called Eli Moore, they had everything that a little girl could want. First stop was the shoe department, and I’d get my black patent leather shoes, next we’d go to the clothes department. I was so spoiled back then, as an only child, I was showered with beautiful things to wear and great toys. Shopping done, we’d go to this café for lunch and a yummy desert. My mom passed on when I was 15 so these moments mean so much for me and I’m thankful for the short time that I was able to spend with her.

I have so many things to be thankful for, a wonderful husband, my Siberian Husky, friends and family who love me. We’re healthy, other than some aches and pains. Our house is in the woods and it is our own little paradise. I can’t think of anything else that I need, other than a few million dollars, lol!

As a teacher, I feel it’s part of my responsibility to help my students think about the good things that they have going, and to be thankful for their blessings. To introduce them to this activity, I tell them the story about my grandmother, and or my mom.  Then I will pass out task cards with Thanksgiving images on them and ask the kids to write down what they’re thankful for and we put them into a decorated Thanksgiving box. They can write as many things as they wish, The Wednesday before Thanksgiving recess. I pass the box around the room and each child, as well as myself, chooses a card and we read what is on it, then try to guess whose card it is and give it to its owner.

I usually end up moved to tears  and so do some of the kids, as this activity is so meaningful to all of us..

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Thanksgiving Grocery Store Trip {CBI}”

by Mrs Ds Corner

1st – 3rd Grade

thanksgiving grocery trip

This activity was created to accompany my students on our Thanksgiving Curriculum Based Instruction (CBI) trip.

Here is how I used it:
– First, print the pages on card stock and laminate. Cut them out and Velcro the backs of the small aisle pieces. This makes it easy for students to graph the data in the grocery store, rather than writing it down.
– When you are in the grocery store, each student will get 1-4 pieces of the larger pictures of food to locate inside the grocery store. I laminate these and use a key ring to hold them together.
– As students are locating the items in the grocery store, have them take note of what aisle or where they found the items. I, also, have students write the prices of the items, or at least say the price and I will keep track of the record of prices.
– When the CBI is finished and we are back at school (same day or next day), we sequence the day. Then we take a look at where we found each item. We make a graph to see if we found any of the items in the same aisle or department of the store.
– We then look at the prices of each food. I have students make a hypothesis of what they think our Thanksgiving meal would cost to purchase. We use our estimating/rounding skills to get a general idea of how much money it would be. We, then, use calculators (I teach Life Skills) to add up the cost.

Don’t forget to *Follow Me* for new products and stop by Mrs. D’s Blog.

Thanks for Looking and Happy Teaching!

Halloween Math and Literacy Fun, freebies and Blog Hop with great prizes!

 Hal Fr  Main Image

Happy almost Halloween everyone! I am so excited to be participating in this Halloween Blog Hop! There are lots of great teacher tips, lessons and freebies along the way, so I hope you’re able to visit each store for inspiration and (who’s kidding who!) the awesome freebies! And check this out:

Prize

You’ll see the Rafflecopter machine a little further down. But first, I thought I’d take you down memory lane..

Did you used to sing the classic song 99 Bottles of Beer, with its stick-in-your-brain-forever melody and uncanny ability to teach even the most math-challenged among us to rote count backwards from 100?

I did, and it stuck so much that, years ago, I changed the words and created an activity to go with it. Its adhesive quality remains.

The activity:

  1. Print enough freebies for your entire class, and one for yourself. You’ll also see options for the color version at the bottom of this post.
  2. Plan enough time for each student to take a turn at the board. You’ll see why in a minute!
  3. Have some early finishers color and cut out your freebie, mount on sturdy paper, laminate if you wish, and place magnets on the back for use on a magnetic surface.
  4. Gather the class and draw a wall for your characters to stand on. If you have not read the story with them (optional purchase pictured below), then introduce the activity by discussing their thoughts regarding standing on high walls, predictions about what could happen etc. Throughout the course of the song, one character will be falling at a time.
  5. Now, warm up that singing voice! “Mi, mi, mi…”
  6. Give each child a chance to make a character fall from the wall as you sing this song:

Hal Fr 1  5 Halloween friends on the wall,
5 Halloween friends …
Hal Fr 2  If 1 of these friends has a big fall,
How many friends are left on the wall?

Hal Fr 3 4 Halloween friends on the wall,
4 Halloween friends …
Hal Fr 4 If 1 of these friends has a big fall,
How many friends are left on the wall?

Hal Fr 53 Halloween friends on the wall,
3 Halloween friends …
Hal Fr 6 If 1 of these friends has a big fall,
How many friends are left on the wall?

And you simply continue this way until there is one friend left on the wall.

7.  Invite your students to discuss what they noticed or found interesting about the song / story. Were there any patterns? Does anyone think that there was math in the story? How could a number sentence be written about what just happened?

8. Have fun!

Now back to the fun for the grown-ups!  Here’s the secret word for the Rafflecopter machine…

FREE MATH LESSON – “Turkey Smartboard Freebie – Skip Counting by 2 Sequencing Puzzle”

by Smart Kinder Kids

Pre-Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

turkey smartboard

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoy this freebie from Smartkinderkids!

With this freebie, you get a brightly colorful and happy smartboard puzzle. Students can work whole group, small group, or individually to sequence the puzzle from 2-20 (skip counting by 2s).

This freebie can also be used as an Assessment Tool by teachers to determine if students can count by 2s.

If you like this product, please consider leaving positive feedback in my TpT store and checking out more Smartboard products! I love Smartboard files because I ensure that my students are actively engaged in their learning, are developing fine motor skills as well as technology skills. The biggest plus as a teacher, besides knowing your kids are learning and having fun, is that you don’t have to search for space to store the items as in traditional center games – just save to a thumb drive and VOILA – you are set for next fall. I hope you enjoy!

Sincerely,
Leigh Majer
