Gerunds, infinitives, and participles, OH MY! Yeah. . .they are not the most titillating thing in the world to teach. In fact, when I had to teach the unit, I had to relearn all the terminology all over again (honestly, I don’t even recall any of my teachers specifically teaching the “gerund.” Hmmmm). Thus, why I think the most confusing aspect of the Verbals is the gerund: firstly, it’s hard to pronounce, and, secondly, what the HECK is its function?! (Even though I pronounced it correctly several times a day, half the students still insisted on calling it a “Grrrr-uh-nd.” Um. Nope, but as long as you know what it does, you could call it “Sally” for all I care! 🙂 )

Anywho, I came up with a “trick” that works almost every time when trying to detect a gerund in a sentence. I call it the “IT” rule. “IT” definitely helped my students become much more clear on if the -ing word was a gerund or just a participle. So here is my simple “IT” trick:

Because a gerund functions as a noun, I taught my students to replace the -ing word with a noun in the sentence: “IT.” If the sentence still makes sense, it’s probably (stress the probably) a gerund. For example:

Example 1: She loves dancing.

Change to: She loves IT.

YEP! We have a gerund!

Example 2: She is dancing in the rain.

Change to: She is IT in the rain.

Hmmm, NOPE. Not a gerund.

You may not like this trick or it may work really well for you. Either way, I am just glad I can share!

Looking for a meaningful and effective way to teach poetry? This unit is a fun way to learn and experiment with figurative language. It uses a mixture of contemporary songs and traditional poetry to teach students about themes and to help them learn the various forms of poetry. The creative, hands-on activities also focus on the importance of having a voice and using it properly.

The unit covers subjects such as: bullying, courage, standing up for yourself and for others, standing up for one’s convictions and discovering what is important to students.

This has helped tremendously in helping my students understand the etymology of words, which is emphasized in the CCSS for ELA.

This is a compilation of over 80 Greek and Latin word parts, complete with definitions, that I use in my classroom. Greek origins are shown in green and Latin in purple in a large and clear font for easy viewing.

To make it interactive, students are presented with the full set of words and word parts, and as they are encountered in reading, math, science, or social studies, the students add them to the wall.

The effects are tremendous. “Iron” being abbreviated as Fe makes sense. If “tele” means far and “phone” means sound, then telephones transmit sounds from far away. Suddenly, they start making connections to television, microphone, microscope… They “get” it!

This can be adapted to most intermediate and higher grade levels; and of course, laminating is optional but will keep them in good condition for years. Another suggestion is to use them in small groups or individually as a game wherein they make lists of words containing these parts, with points awarded to the most unique (not listed by others) words. Fits in perfectly with word study.

I use this in sociology, but it’s great for world history, as well. Assign students a culture to research. They will create a poster or trifold and bring in artifacts and food samples from that culture. On presentation day, instead of standing up and sharing with the class,, students will set up displays around the classroom. Students will use the note handout to record information as they walk around the classroom, sampling the food and discovering information about different cultures.

This is a 10 slide powerpoint that introduces the concepts of continental drift and plate tectonics. It includes colorful pictures, powerpoint animations and a link to an online animation of global plate reconstructions.

The slides include a short discussion of the evidence Alfred Wegener used to develop his theory of continental drift, namely:

geographical fit of continents
fossils match across oceans
rock type and structure match across oceans
ancient glacial features

This powerpoint is meant to be a “starting point” for introducing the topic of continental drift and plate tectonics and gives you a base from which to delve deeper into the topic with your students.

Search Terms: Solstice, Equinox, Seasons, Sun’s path, winter

This is a winter solstice activity. It is a great introduction or reinforcement to why we have seasons, and a fun, short, science activity to do right before a winter break.

It includes a little bit of information about winter celebrations around the world, and then an exploration into the ‘reason for the seasons.’ It is appropriate for middle school or high school.

This lesson can be done as a whole group activity with a projector to show the map, or by printing out the map ahead of time, or individual or small groups on a computer.

Engineering Challenges are an exciting part of the new NGSS Standards. I love the collaboration and team building that these projects bring to my classroom. My students LOVE the excitement and engagement that naturally occurs while they are actively participating!

In this challenge, students are given 3 types of material and have to collaborate on what kind of table they can make. The team sketches a design they all agree they can create and then set out on the journey to build a table. I do not set a timer, but this activity is easily adaptable to any changes you want to add, such as a timer or adding a different variable.

Perfect for grades 3 and beyond. I have used this with adults and the results are just as eye opening and engaging!

For a busy time of year, this is an easy print-and-go set of holiday math / shopping activities for students working on money skills in elementary school or life skills classes. Put the sales flyers in a page protector and either cut out the task cards for single use or put them in a photo album or laminate for re-use.

This freebie is a sneak peek of of my Economics of Shopping Series

The freebie consists of three sales flyers for holiday decorations, 8 task cards for writing in prices, and 2 print and go worksheets to answer questions about the flyer. The sales flyers are the same with 3 different levels of pricing. The worksheets are identical but one has a word bank to assist students. The worksheet with the word bank will only work with the stores called “Holly’s Decorations Sale.” It will not work for the third sheet because the Christmas tree price is different. The words from the bank could be cut out and pasted in the answer section, or laminated and attached with Velcro for re-use.

Thanksgiving FREEBIE: Thank It Forward

This Thanksgiving FREEBIE will first get students to focus on being thankful during this season for certain people or things in their lives. They will choose one or more “Thank It Forward” certificates to fill out to hand to someone who has influenced what they are thankful for as described on the certificate.

With each “Thank It Forward” certificate, the student will include a blank “Thank It Forward” certificate for the recipient to complete and hand forward to someone else – sending the thankfulness forward to another person.

Are you thinking, Oh No!!! Another parent night, what am I going to do? Do you stay up worrying the night before?, or feel butterflies in your stomach? Are you self conscious about getting up and speaking in front of parents? Well, if you answered yes to any of these questions, you’re not alone.

My teaching partner and I came up with a way to make parent night fun for everyone, including ourselves, since neither of us likes to get up in front of an audience, other than our classroom, lol!

It happened one afternoon, after the kids had gone home. We wanted to do something different for parent night. Suddenly, the phrase, “Actions speak louder than words,” came into my head, and I had an Ah ha! moment. Why not show parents what our program is like instead of telling them. That’s how our Parent Night Video Program began.

We prepared for the taping by making sure we got the go ahead from the principal as well as all the teachers who work with our students. Next we let our classes in on it, and they just loved the idea.

When the appointed day arrived, we were at the front door, camcorder in hand, to tape them as soon as they got off the bus. We were greeted with waves and hellos as they entered the building and proceeded to their homerooms.

Mostly, we recorded the kids, but we also wanted to show our teaching style so the parents could get to know us a little, We would go back and forth between rooms creating a short video of both. This can be tricky because the kids are alone for a few minutes just about every period. It’s amazing how much you learn about yourself and your charges when you watch yourself teach. We always made sure that we captured each child doing something, we never wanted anyone to feel left out, or for any parent to say, “I didn’t see my Sally.”

After period one which was either history or science, we’d escort them to Unified Arts, taping while walking. Some of them would be sewing, others would be doing woodwork, art, or metal shop. Again we would go back and forth between classes doing our filming. Parents loved to see them in action, we’d hear “oohs and ahs,” as they saw their little ones using power equipment, or sewing machines, and cleaning up after themselves. They were in amazed at the types of things the kids did, especially in metal/wood-shop, without losing fingers or limbs.

Unified Arts were over, we would then tape either English or Math classes continuing to make sure that everyone was included.

At the finish of a busy morning, we would switch classes and get ready to go to lunch. which is a real trip. We filmed them going through the lunch line and showed the cafeteria staff serving their food. Watching their child eat, and what they threw away was eye opening for many parents.

Back to class to continue taping either math, English, world history or science classes. As the day drew to a close, you could still see us taping the children while in homeroom study period. and as their buses were being announced over the loudspeaker. Our ending statement says it all, “The last bus has been called, the room is empty, and quiet and sometimes we like it like that.” We always get chuckles from the parents because they can relate.

Our final step, before parent night, was to send notes home letting them know that they will be viewing a presentation of, A Day in the Life of their Child. Then we did some edits.

During the day of parent night, the class gets to see the end production, We give them popcorn or some type or snack and enjoy the movie together. We can now laugh at ourselves and congratulate the students for a job well done.

Parent night finally arrived and our production was ready for viewing. We introduced it and told them that the video will probably answer every question that they might have and it usually does. Jokingly we called ourselves Marin & Filipek DeMille after the Hollywood director Cecil B. DeMille and the parents chuckled over that. The ice had been broken and we’re ready to begin.

Of course, there were times when the unexpected happened, like the video player doesn’t work, or we can’t find the TV that we signed up for. We’re all human, and these things occur. We took it in our stride and the parents were understanding. Eventually, we got everything up and running and all were happy.

The best part is to watch the reactions of the parents as they watch their kiddos in action. They marvel at how busy they are and how
much work is done throughout the day. They’ve never seen how their child behaves in school and they just love this. Better still, they realize what a difficult job we, as teachers have trying to tame these middle school children.
