I always approach the end of the school year with mixed emotions, though I’m ecstatic to be out for summer vacation, I always feel a little sad saying good-bye. Many of my soon to be 7th graders hug me and leave with tears in their eyes, knowing that our little family will no longer be together. All the trials and tribulations, the challenges, the fun times and sad times will be always be with us, but it will never be the same.
Reflecting back to the beginning of the year, I remember how small they were when they first entered my room, some shy and nervous about their first few days, others acting cool trying to impress their peers., especially those they don’t know. The first hurdle over, they’ve opened their lockers. Simple process for some while others end up in tears because they can’t figure out how to do it. By the end of the year, they look back at this and laugh at themselves.
How strict I am the first few weeks, trying very hard not to crack a smile. This is the time to get them into shape. so that we all have a great year. They learn the rules and always test me. Finally, after awhile, I can let my hair down and be myself. I can crack jokes, they can joke around and we can all laugh together. This is when real learning takes place, and to see their “ah ha,” moments is what teaching is all about.
I love 6th graders, the majority are so willing to learn, that it makes teaching rewarding and enjoyable.. One of my favorite things is our morning discussions. Their backgrounds are quite diverse and I learn something new almost everyday. Many are knowledgeable about a lot of things and they’re eager to share. They can talk about whatever is on their mind, and they feel safe doing so. We are now, officially a family and I’ve become their surrogate parent.
As I say good-bye, each of my kids takes a part of me with them. I feel certain that I’ve given them the support, strength and confidence to move on to seventh grade. The time has come for them to spread their wings a fly.
When I close the door for the final time, I take comfort in knowing that soon I’ll have another bunch of little chickadees to bring up.

I use this at the end of our short story unit when students compose their own. Students love to read their classmates’ stories, but are usually unsure on how to give valuable feedback on creative writing. This rubric helps.

In this fun game, students race against their opponent to complete a set of multiplication problems. Each student has a set of the same problems, while they share one writing utensil. Players take turns completing problems and rolling a die. One player completes as many problems as they can before their opponent rolls a one and wins the pencil. Play continues until one player completes all of the problems on his/her sheet.
Multiplication problems cover single digit multiplication using numbers 0-9. This game is a great way to review and practice multiplication facts.

Diffy is a fun and intriguing math game that requires subtraction, logic, and pattern recognition to win. It can be played with whole numbers, negative numbers, fractions, and money. This game is challenging for both kids and adults!
You can play Diffy using the document camera with the whole class, or have students complete their own Diffy games either in worksheet format or at a center with laminated wipe-off sheets.
This download includes:
-Teacher intro and game sample
-Color Diffy game with directions
-Black and white diffy game with directions
These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in grayscale. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. Laminate and use them again and again. Alternatively, you could print on cardstock. It works well to keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

This soil freebie will help you and your students observe soil samples and test their capacity to retain water.
It contains recommendations and student recording pages.
Directions:
Set up 4 stations for students to record data. Include a different soil sample at each station. I like using gravel, sand, potting soil or loam, and clay. Each station should have a small container of the soil particles (like a petri dish), a graduated cylinder, funnel, and coffee filter.
Go over the question and write a hypothesis.
As a class, put 40 mL of water in each funnel containing a coffee filter and funnel with the particles inside. Allow time for the water to pass through the coffee filter and into the graduated cylinder.
Then, have students visit the stations to record their observations. Create a chart and graph of the data, draw conclusions, and answer the question.

Do your students struggle with correct spelling? Give each student a simplified spelling dictionary they can write in and keep! Although my students use this across disciplines, I designed it especially for my writing workshop. It is a list of alphabetized frequently used words and frequently misspelled words! There is also a place at the bottom of each page for students to add words that they use often in their own writing. In the back of the booklet, I included the following word lists:

This bundle contains six units that give specific word examples of each syllable word type. The six syllable types of reading are Closed, V-C-e, Open, r-Controlled, Vowel Digraph & Diphthong, and Final Stable. Each unit provides a plethora of word lists that target each syllable type. Are pencils driving you crazy?
Students not having a pencil?
Losing them? Breaking the tip?
The pencil craze got to me too! It doesn’t need to! During my student teaching we had cups with pencils at each group that we sharpened every morning and ensured there were plenty in each cup, which was great! That was in first grade. Over the years, I became use to about 2-3 students per class not having a pencil, therefore, I always purchased a box or two at a time and handed pencils out to those students. Grades 1-4
This reading packet provides 23 word lists of the final stable syllable type words. Also, a master list of all the words is included as a quick reference. A final stable consonant is one of the six types of syllables in reading. Each list in this unit includes words using all the vowels with a final stable consonant. Reading will become more manageable for students once they understand syllable types. Download my free alphabet cards. Using these cards will give students another strategy to help them decode and encode words. These ready-made word lists can be used in the multiple ways:
