Following Directions | Getting Your Students to Follow Directions | Classroom Management

If your students are anything like my students, then they have a hard time following directions.

So I created this funny little test on following directions.

There are 30 tasks that they must do…but if they read correctly, then they really only have 2 tasks to do.

What happens in my classroom is that one or two students actually read and follow the directions correctly, while the rest of the students are doing funny things like yelling, “Old MacDonald had a farm” and standing up and turning around. The students who followed the directions are laughing hysterically at the other students.

It is so much fun! It also really enforces the importance of following directions.

I love to get students hooked on reading and with all the technology in their faces, I thought I’d take advantage of that. I decided it was time to hook them on book trailers.

Book Trailers are just like movie trailers, where they show you clipits of the book. It’s usually just enough to get you excited and want to read the book. You can find many book trailers on the internet to interest your students.

Since we have so many standards to tackle, this project was amazing at meeting many of them – including technology, writing, and reading.

With the new common core, we now have to make sure our students are reading at their highest able level and that their text is more complex than before. It’s in the standards, whether anyone likes it or not.

During a reading workshop that I attended, I heard about this idea that helps release students gradually into the world of more complex texts. It’s called using the ladder of complexity.

Here students start reading a book that they would normally choose and then work their way up to a more complex text. They also explain why they believe the book is more complex. Of course, you can always make sure you instruct students on what makes a text more complex. There is more detailed information on my blog where you can download this free organizer. This is a fun and simple game puzzle. Simply print and cut out the pieces. Students will have to use their basic fact knowledge of the nines multiplication tables to put the puzzle back together again. This fun game can be played over and over again and would be great for early finishers or for a math center!

I love to teach science. There is something about all the hands-on, exploring activities that just gets me excited. Our kids are no different. So when it comes to plants, the thought was – “how can I make this hands on, besides just planting a plant!”

With much thought, I was able to create my plant unit with lots of engaging and hands-on activities for students as they explore the life cycle of a plant, the characteristics of plants, their structures and functions, and much more! We even discuss photosynthesis a bit.

In my plant bundle you will find my complete plant unit, plant task cards, my plant craftivity (where students create a plant in a pot with the various parts of a plant written on leaves. Common Core is now focusing on more than just simple reading skills and strategies! It’s also making sure that your students are able to communicate and listen well. (Of course, my district was implementing something similar prior but it was not emphasized as much as now.)

I struggled in the beginning trying to figure out just how I was going to teach my third graders to listen. Imagine – if there was ever a teacher that could actually 100% teach students to listen… he or she would be sensation! A millionaire…

Ah, but I’m not here to dream or to convince you that I have the fool proof secret. But I am here to give you a FREE tool that I use in the classroom to help my students work on this important life skill!

First head over to my blog by clicking here and download these really neat task cards! Then print them in the colors you desire, cut them out, and laminate them back to back. Cut a small slit along the bottom of the laminated card to insert a craft stick with a dab of hot glue. Viola! You have handy task cards! (Of course, you can eliminate the stick!)

Here is a picture of both sides so you can see the thinking stems for both the speaker and the listener:

I hope these cards are useful for implementing those common core standards of speaking and listening… and hey, if you do manage to figure out the mysterious way to get *any* kid to truly 100% listen, be sure to let me know! 🙂

Grades 3-6

When I taught fifth grade, I just loved the physical and chemical changes unit! It was so much fun and really engaged my students. So I have put it together for you!

This unit was so engaging because it is just packed full of hands-on experiments where students really dig into the properties of matter and determine what makes a physical change and what makes a chemical change.

For instance, we melt styrofoam cups:

We also created slime:

We explored the various properties of matter! We looked closely at the three states – solid, liquid, and gas!

We talked about a variety of scenerios where students had to determine if something was a physical or chemical change!

Included in this engaging resource are practice sheets and review sheets, answer keys, lesson plans, experimental labs, and much more! You’ll even find some interactive notebook pieces such as this:

This short poetry assignment has student focus on word choice, personification, simile and alliteration. In addition, it gets them into the season of winter, as they have to brainstorm vivid vocabulary that describes winter.

Engineering Challenges are an exciting part of the new NGSS Standards. I love the collaboration and team building that these projects bring to my classroom. My students LOVE the excitement and engagement that naturally occurs while they are actively participating!

In this challenge, students are given 3 types of material and have to collaborate on what kind of table they can make. The team sketches a design they all agree they can create and then set out on the journey to build a table. I do not set a timer, but this activity is easily adaptable to any changes you want to add, such as a timer or adding a different variable.

Perfect for grades 3 and beyond. I have used this with adults and the results are just as eye opening and engaging!
