This is a jigsaw project over Peter the Great. I split my classes up into several groups and had them answer two questions a piece. I then had them teach each group in front of the class about the two questions they answered. The kids really liked this project and they enjoyed teaching their classmates. I would recommend this project to anyone covering the Age of Absolutism!

Kids will have a fun and engaging time learning about Abraham Lincoln with this interactive Smartboard.

Use as an introduction, unit review or for independent practice with your students.

Simply drag and drop the correct answer into the box. Picture cues and differences in answer box sizes will help younger learners. This can also be a great opportunity to use the Smartboard markers to locate sight words within sentences, find and mark punctuation and capitalization.

The Memory Coat book study goes along with an blog post about teaching inference.

This heart-warming book is about families immigrating to America to escape persecution. A young boy lost his parents due to an epidemic and he ends up living with his relatives. His only reminder of his family is the coat his mother made for him. Grisha’s coat is tattered on the outside but beautiful on the inside. This story is about the family’s journey to American and going through the immigration process at Ellis Island.

In this FREE unit, activities include making inferences, vocabulary, and crafts with a coat and suitcase. This unit can go with cultural studies, historic fiction, and family heritage.

Teach grammar in a creative and meaningful way. No more boring grammar. grammar

Simplify your life and make grammar fun and effective.

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit in grammar with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages, and then we would correct them together. It was tedious, and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and learn grammar. Although this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, directions, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (16 pages)

Activities included focus on:

-the logistics of the sentence (the basic parts)

-the prepositional phrase

-the adjective phrase

-the adverb phrase

-the verbal phrase

-the appositive phrase

-the independent and subordinate clauses

-subjects and predicates

-fragments

-run-on sentences

-types of sentences

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their work and learn from one another.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to about sentences.

This is a set of four high-resolution photographs of petroglyphs found near Arches National Park, Utah. I guarantee that they were taken by me and that they may be used commercially without worry about violating copyright.

Due to file size of the actual photos, the thumbnails show details from the photos but not the full photo.

What kid wouldn’t LOVE creating their own fossil! In this super fun pack, students can do just that and more!

Students will start by piecing together their fractured fossil recipe. Then students will be ready to use the recipe to create their own (faux) fossils! As a follow up, students can write a creative writing piece with the provided story starter.

The way I use it…
Students enjoy this project! This is a 1-2 week project. As I scaffold and model the information to my students, I have students write in the due dates on the checklist. I make this an at-school project and have students keep their brochure in a designated location.
