LANGUAGE ARTS – “Closed Syllable Reading Bundle Packet”

Amanda Trump

Grades K-3 Closed Syllable Bundle Cover

Closed Syllables Bundle Packet-4Closed Syllable 1-Compressed

Closed Syllable 2 Compressed

Fifty percent of our English language is closed syllable type words. Once a student learns this syllable type, they have a great foundation upon which to build. So it is a well worth our efforts to invest our time teaching this syllable type if we are going to have successful readers.I created this packet for my students to have fun learning closed syllable type words. There are 6 syllable types, and closed syllable is the most basic type to teach. There are multiple word lists in the unit, ‘Reading Closed Syllables.’ This reading unit provides 158 word lists of the closed syllable type words. Also, a master list of all the words is included as a quick reference. The lists in this unit include words spelled using each vowel in conjunction with common phonograms. These lists of words will help students recognize the common patterns seen in closed syllables. Also, reading will become more manageable for students once they understand the different syllable types.

The unit, ’15 Games & Activities Teaching Closed Syllables’ include 15 fun games and activities that can be placed in literacy centers for the students to enjoy. The following games are included in this packet:

1. Bubble Bath
2. Bubble Yum Relay
3. Scrambled Eggs
4. Bag the Odd Chip
5. Morph the Word
6. Flower Power
7. My Closed Syllable Word Book
8. Recording Sheet
9. Roll a Word
10. Spin a Word
11. Puzzle Words
12. Hangin’ Out the Laundry
13. Map Out The Treasure
14. Connect 4
15. Beat the Clock

MISC LESSON: “New Year’s Resolution Flip Book”

I love New Years!  It’s a great time to start fresh with new goals.  Am I successful?  Not always, but it is fun trying right?  And it’s the perfect time to do so (and easier to keep track of when you started it!).

Kids are the same way- at least  my kiddos in my classroom are.  They are already telling me predictions for Christmas and what 2016 will bring them.  That’s when I got the idea… Why not have the little ones create their own New Year’s Resolution too!

new years resolutions flip book new years day

I created this easy flip book for students to work through as they think out their goal (along with a graphic organizer to brainstorm on).  In it students will not only determine what their goal is, but also describe why it’s their goal and just how they will accomplish it!  I also can have them turn it into a written piece or reflect on how 2015 went so they can better determine how to reach their goals this year!  Plus, it’s just cute!

New Year's Resolution Flip Book Again

So are you thinking this would make a great morning work project on the first day back from winter break?  Or maybe you are thinking it’d make a great center activity or for early finishers.  Head on over to my TpT store to check it out!  I think your kiddos will definitely enjoy this cute little keepsake!

FREE: Math lesson “Multiplication Freebie”

As the school year is winding down before winter break, you are probably looking at just review materials for your little ones!  I imagine if your kiddos are like mine, they are starting to shift around in their seat more and are talking waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about break- as if they are already on it!  There is no way their brain is going to take in any new material right now!

multiplication facts, freebie, math, holiday

So, I created this Holiday Multiplication Math Freebie to review our multiplication facts (because they could really use some extra practice to get those facts down!) that is Christmas based to hold their attention a little as they work on it.

Some of the sheets I have used as morning work or a quick warm up!  I have not only included practice with their facts, but I have also added array practice and story problems!

Head on over to my Teachers Pay Teachers store to download it FREE!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “CVC Syllable Pattern Match Up FREEBIE”

by Phun Phonics

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

cvc pattern match

CVC Syllable Pattern Match Up
Houghton Mifflin Journeys
Unit 1 Lesson 1

Words can have one or more parts called syllables and each syllable has one vowel sound. Dividing words into syllables can help to read many words.

Directions: Print, cut and laminate. Students will match the two syllables to make the correct word. Then once, they have matched all words, they will record the completed word and identify the vowel sound in each syllable.

I have made two different recording forms. One that is a full page, can be laminated and used with white board markers, or copied and used with pencil, however you wish. The second recording page is a half page, if you are crazy about not making copies like me!

The cards could also be used as a memory or concentration game if the activity is finished early 🙂
ENJOY!!

Counting by 2s, phrasing, fluency and quotation marks with REINDEER!

Counting by 2s post

Have you ever noticed how perfectly the Santa’s reindeer and Rudolph stories lend themselves to teaching kids about counting by twos? The reindeer are paired up in the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer song and in Santa’s famous line at the end of the classic story Twas the Night Before Christmas. The teachable moment is just sitting in front us begging to be used!

Perhaps that is why I, That Fun Math Reading Teacher, have started passing on this Phrasing and Fluency Reader to teachers as a math resource as well. (For anyone who may have purchased it more than a year ago, please go back to your purchases page and download an updated version.)

Last year I was using 10 at the Sled primarily for the phrasing, fluency and fun factor. That is, after all, the purpose for which it was written in the first place. It can be sung to the tune of Ten in the Bed, and even if students are not familiar with the song, they do catch on to the simple melody quickly and enjoy the repetition. They also hear how certain words fall together naturally to create phrases.

TenattheSledacountingbysphrasingfluencyreaderandsong

After several requests for a black and white student booklet last year, I created one over the summer, using speech bubbles where there are quotation marks used in the color edition:

Th2 10 at Sled 1 Th3 10 at Sled

I wanted to show students what quotation marks really mean, in a visual way, rather than only telling them. I am finding that with this year’s students, this concrete approach has made a huge difference. We compare my color copy with their black and white copy and discuss how quotation marks and speech bubbles really serve the same purpose. *Lightbulb moment*!

The tone, expression (and curiously deep voices) they use when reading the ‘spoken’ lines are hilarious! But clearly, meaningful to them!

Thank you to all of the teacher bloggers who provided feedback during the Christmas in July sale that led to these revisions.

Enjoy these last two weeks!

FREE LESSON – “Social Studies Causation Cards”

The Owl Teacher

Grades 3-6

Causation Cards are the newest and next best thing since task cards!

FREE CAUSATION CARDS, Social Studies, Economics

What Are Causation Cards?

Causation cards are a fun, interactive way to review vocabulary and concepts that students need to learn. In addition, this engaging activity helps improve fluency and listening skills.

How Does Causation Cards Work?

The method is similar to the “I have… who has…” cards, where each student has to listen carefully to other students to know when it is their turn. However, causation cards do not contain a repeated language (like “I have… who has…”). Instead it will state an action that a student must perform and a statement they must say. The action can be something simple from jumping in the air to drawing on the board. The statement can be a definition of a term or related concept.

Why Are Causation Cards Important?
This activity is a great resource for practicing those all important speaking and listening skills while building fluency. This resource is a great way to improve student’s reading accuracy, prosody, and fluency rate.

How Do You Use Them In The Classroom?

Have the class read through the set of cards multiple times giving each student a different card each time or read to each other by taking turns.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Pentomino Exploration”

by Middle School Math Moments

4th – 7th Grade

pentomino

Use pentominoes to get your math class discussing, problem solving, persisting, and thinking! Students really have fun with pentominoes, and the great part about the “fun” is that they are having fun thinking and solving a problem (which they don’t seem to realize!).

I’ve used the activity with a very wide range of students and it has quickly given me valuable information about my new students (I do this on the first day or two of math class). This type of problem solving is accessible to all students, and provides a great opportunity for teachers to observe who’s willing to share ideas, who sits back and watches, how students speak to each other, how well they can verbalize their thoughts, and so on.

The activity is very “simple” – fit the pentominoes into the “frames,” leaving no gaps and having nothing sticking beyond the edges of the frame (not as easy as it sounds:)

There are 3 different sized sets of pentominoes in this product, with 3 different sized frames for them to be fit into.

These pentominoes do need to be copied (I’d recommend using card stock), cut, and laminated. There are frames provided that should be laminated as well.
There are colored pentominoes and black and white ones, in case you want to copy onto colored card stock.

Enjoy the exploration!
