Language Arts; Science: “Flipbooks”

By Laurane Rae

Grades 2-6

Flipbooks are undeniably known for their versatility; for one thing, they scaffold the structure of a piece of writing, are a handy visual tool, and look simply impressive. They can be used for just about any subject or topic:

The templates can also be glued into an Interactive Notebook.
As a flipbook has different compiled components, I have my students first finish each section. They work at their own pace and place each finished section in a folder. Each team of 4-5 students sit together and have their own folder on their table, that way all their pieces are in one place and easily accessible.
My students have told me that the best part is when all the sections are completed and they get to compile them and see the finished whole.
The proud look on their faces say it all.

KINGS AND QUEENS – READING PASSAGES AND BINGO!

Grades 4-6 and Homeschool

KINGS, QUEENS AND THE FEUDAL SYSTEM

READING PASSAGES AND BINGO

bingo kings cover

BINGO is a fun way to review new concepts and vocabulary words. The words in this BINGO set relate to the topics of  Kings, Queens and the Feudal System, and makes the perfect review for the eight  pages of informational text that are included in this product. The passages can also be used for CLOSE READING, using any non-fiction graphic organizer (not included).

This product includes:

8 One-Page Passages of Informational Text (LEXILE  850-950)

36 Unique Bingo Cards (18 pages with two cards per sheet)

The Caller’s Tracking Sheet

24 Calling Cards Containing Words and Clues

bingo kings 7bingo kings 8

Informational Text

There are eight pages of informational text about the topic: Kings, Queens and the Feudal System. The passages cover the following topics:

  • The Feudal System
  • Becoming King; Becoming Queen
  • The Coronation
  • Qualities and Abilities of Royalty
  • Famous Medieval Kings
    • William the Conqueror
    • Richard I
    • King John
  • Famous Medieval Queens
    • Matilda of Flanders
    • Eleanor of Aquitaine
  • Other Classes of the Feudal System

Words that are included:

King, Queen, Pope, Feudal System, Regent, Nobles, Consort, Serf, Peasant, Magna Carta, King John, Crusades, Matilda of Flanders, Clergy, Skilled Laborers, William the Conqueror, Taxes, Fief, Duchy, Loyalty and Service, Long Live the King!,  Coronation, Charter, Eleanor of Aquitaine

Although all cards contain the same 24 words, the order on each card is unique.  Each student will find every word on their card.  Of course, this means “blackout” is not a good option – although my students sometimes insisted on playing all the way through and singing out “BINGO” in unison at the end!

This product is great for a large group, class or co-op.!  It can be played in the traditional way where the instructor randomly chooses one of the cards and calls out the word.  Or, to play as a review game, the instructor can read the clue that appears on the card below the BINGO word.

That Fun Reading Teacher’s Sight-Word-Stages Leveled Readers: Differentiate just by printing!

SWS intro

As educators, we have all kinds of fun activities and strategies for teaching and reinforcing sight words for reading and writing. Many of them involve practicing these words out of context. The point of Sight Word Recognition is to be able to recognize these words at a glance, in isolation. But all of the practice needn’t be.

I am in the early stages of creating a series of readers called ‘Sight Word Stages’ readers to help teachers differentiate for their students within the same reading level. While some of our students may struggle with putting all of the pieces of the reading puzzle together and need to work on that, there are many others who simply have difficulty remembering, and who require extra opportunities to practice using these little words in context.

Here is an example of a DRA/Reading Recovery Level 2 Reader:

Furry th

A color PDF is included in the package, indicating the sight words of focus on the cover.

I print these on thicker paper, laminate them and keep them with other guided reading books.

The Beauty of Interactive Notebooks

ELA: “MEGA POETRY UNIT : {INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK , QR CODES, EDITABLE POWERPOINT}”
By Laurane Rae@TeachToTell
Grades 3-6

Interactive notebooks templates are so versatile! Other than sharing in the commonality of being a printable with the humble worksheet, they serve to greatly economize on space.

For instance, you can scaffold teaching and learning effectively.

You can have prompts on the cover tabs followed by responses under these tabs.

Here I’ve scaffolded the structure of different poem types. Students can look at the prompts and follow along when writing their own poems.

They serve as excellent graphic organizers and effectively target kinesthetic learners with all the cutting and gluing:  active hands = active minds.

Great for Compare and Contrast features too.

And above all anything in an Interactive Notebook looks appealing!

It’s all in this bundle!

Sincerely,
Laurane Rae

Comment Bank

Comment Bank

With report cards right around corner and an increasing demand for specific student comments, make your life easier with this Comment Bank.

The Comment Bank has been constructed to save the Language Arts teacher time when offering constructive and helpful comments on students’ evaluation. Marking papers in any Language Arts class is always a lengthy process. Increasingly, teachers are being asked to write more detailed comments to highlight students’ strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes we run out of ideas. Being the vigilant teachers we are, and wanting to help our students achieve their potential is and will always be one of our priorities. To this end, when marking students’ papers, writing down everything we want to say to them about their papers would be a very lengthy process. I have decided to share my personal comment bank with you.
Comment bank thumb
The bank comments on the following areas:

-Structure
-Communication
-The next step
-Mechanics
-Style
-Persuasion
-Analysis

The package contains 7 pages of comments, which are divided by levels of accomplishment A, B, C and D.

Included in this package are over 120 comments for students. You can get inspiration from these pages to handwrite your comments, or you can do what I do and copy/paste your comments into a word document, print, and staple the comment to the students’ evaluations. This is a real time saver. Parents, students, and school administration LOVE this method of feedback. And, this way, it takes much less time to be much more efficient.

Language Arts – “The Secret Heart” Analyzing and Writing Poetry

Language Arts – “The Secret Heart” Analyzing and Writing Poetry

By Mary Pat Mahoney

Just Add Students

Teach critical thinking, analysis, and creative writing using the poem “The Secret Heart” by Robert Coffin. This delightful poem tells the story of a childhood memory a son has about his father.

This resource will guide your students’ understanding of the poem by using the TP-FASTT and DIDLS analysis acronyms.

The analysis tools are broken down in easy-to-follow activities – including practice scanning the poem.

The lesson ends with an opportunity for students to write their own childhood memory poem based on the format of “The Secret Heart.”

This resource includes:
*daily lesson plans (CCSS aligned)
*pre-reading childhood memory activity
*student notes
*paraphrase chart
*vocabulary
*figurative language activity
*analysis of figurative language
*DIDLS chart
*attitude analysis
*symbol analysis
*title chart
*theme analysis
*guided writing prompt: Analyze theme
*comprehension assessment
*graphic organizers for original poem
*paper and frame for final poem
*rubric
*answer keys

“The Secret Heart” is widely anthologized. It is not in the Public Domain, so I haven’t included a copy of the poem with this lesson. It is available through online and print sources.
