FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Discussion Prompt Cards FREE”

by Rainbow City Learning

3rd – 5th Grade

Let these adorable gnomes lead the way as your students discover and express feelings of gratitude. In the full resource, you will find prompt cards, a SCOOT game, posters, notecards, and a Photo Booth activity all inside this motivating resource.

As they answer and discuss the prompt cards, students will reach inside to activate empathy, generosity, and open hearts and minds. They will find the magic that awaits in doing good deeds and the joy that can be found in ordinary tasks.

The FREE SAMPLE contains four discussion/writing prompt cards to try in your classroom.

The full resource can be found here: Grateful Gnomes

In the full resource, you will find the following:

  • Use the 28 cards as discussion prompts, writing prompts, or to play a SCOOT game. The cards would be a great addition to your morning meeting (or whatever community time you have). Just discuss one card per day. The cards may also be used as quickwrite prompts or journal entries.
  • The SCOOT game can be played as a prewriting or pre-dicussion activity, giving each child a beginning response. Card backs , response page, and BREAK cards are included.
  • Use the posters as inspiration while you are working through the activities in this resource.
  • Have some fun with the photo booth gnome hat props, and create a unique and meaningful display for your bulletin board or hallway. Attach the hats (after cutting out) to a cardstock band or headband. Then take a photo of the student wearing the hat. Four example posters are included to demonstrate how to combine a “Photo Booth” picture with a statement of one way that each student is grateful.
  • Use the “Grateful” blank cards for you and your students to send messages of gratitude to each other.
  • All resources are included both in full color and black/white.

The thumbnails below show the full paid resource.

Wishing you a season and year ahead of gratitude!

FREE MISC. LESSON – “FREE Paper Drop System”

by Laura Candler

2nd – 6th Grade

Here’s an easy paper management system developed by Laura Candler to deal with the problem of students forgetting to put names on their papers. When they finish their work, they slide their papers into a “paper drop,” a laminated brown envelope with a student checklist attached. At the end of the class period, pull out the papers to be sure you have everyone’s work. Then put the papers right back into the envelope to keep them together for grading later. The entire Paper Drop System system is described in this packet and includes the printables you need to make it work for you.

3 Tried & True Games to Teach Place Value & Rounding
By Kathie Yonemura of Tried and True Teaching Tools

Beginning of the year. . . I used to be so tempted to skip teaching place value because it seemed too simplistic, assuming kids knew how to read larger numbers. Plus I wanted to get on with the “real math”:multiplication and long division. WRONG! The Left Angle Mystery
By Vicky Rauch of Scipi

Geometry is probably my favorite part of math to teach because it is so visual; plus, the subject lends itself to doing many hands-on activities, even with my college students. When our unit on points, lines and angles is finished, it is time for the unit test. Almost every year I ask the following question: What is a left angle? Some of the responses I have received over the years are disheartening.

Well, either that person is extremely lucky, extremely gifted in motivating his or her students, or simply using proven methods to stimulate creativity. Spelling Flip Book

Product Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flip book when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

It’s teaching made easy!

FREE MATH LESSON – “(Not your ordinary…) Geometric Shape Bingo”

by Amy Bratsos

2nd – 5th Grade

I am very excited to share the revised version of my Geometric Shapes Bingo! The concepts and vocabulary remain the same, but the game and clue cards are redesigned using Powerpoint, giving the product a more attractive, kid-friendly “face lift”!!
This is NOT your ordinary Bingo game! This set includes 10 different reproducible Bingo cards with the traditional format of 24 squares and a “free space” in the middle. Each of the squares has a word or a picture of a different polygon, including such shapes as squares, rectangles, circles, trapezoids, rhombuses, right triangles, scalene triangles, isosceles triangles, obtuse triangles, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons, There are 70 clue cards that the teacher reads and the students choose a corresponding square to cover- here is where the CHALLENGE begins! More than half of the clues can be answered correctly with more than one shape, so not only does the student have to be able to identify and classify shapes, s/he has to think strategically in order to cover the shape that increases the chances of filling an entire horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row. For example, the clue “this shape always has at least one right angle” could describe a right triangle, a square, or a rectangle, In addition to definitions using geometry vocabulary, the clues offer a variety of opportunities for higher level thinking. Knowledge of calculating perimeter and area, as well as familiarity with angle measurement are necessary to answer several of the clues.

The Common Core Standards challenge teachers to provide many opportunities for identifying, classifying, comparing, and problem solving using shapes, and this Bingo game is a good resource to use as a fun opportunity for students to practice these skills. I was very excited to stretch my own mathematical thinking as I created this game, and am enthusiastically working on other engaging and challenging lessons and activities to help our students gain a deep understanding of geometry.
This set includes
-10 colored reproducible game cards (because each clue has many possible answers, more than one student having a duplicate card isn’t a problem)
– Instructions for the traditional game, as well as several variations of the game to provide differentiation for a variety of skill and grade levels
-70 reproducible clues

The colored game cards produce a nice grayscale copy, but if you prefer blackline masters I would be happy to provide you with those free of charge.

Thank you for your interest in this game- I hope your students enjoy it and you see measurable growth in their ability to describe, identify, and classify shapes!
