FREE: Math lesson “Multiplication Freebie”

As the school year is winding down before winter break, you are probably looking at just review materials for your little ones!  I imagine if your kiddos are like mine, they are starting to shift around in their seat more and are talking waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about break- as if they are already on it!  There is no way their brain is going to take in any new material right now!

multiplication facts, freebie, math, holiday

So, I created this Holiday Multiplication Math Freebie to review our multiplication facts (because they could really use some extra practice to get those facts down!) that is Christmas based to hold their attention a little as they work on it.

Some of the sheets I have used as morning work or a quick warm up!  I have not only included practice with their facts, but I have also added array practice and story problems!

Head on over to my Teachers Pay Teachers store to download it FREE!

Counting by 2s, phrasing, fluency and quotation marks with REINDEER!

Counting by 2s post

Have you ever noticed how perfectly the Santa’s reindeer and Rudolph stories lend themselves to teaching kids about counting by twos? The reindeer are paired up in the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer song and in Santa’s famous line at the end of the classic story Twas the Night Before Christmas. The teachable moment is just sitting in front us begging to be used!

Perhaps that is why I, That Fun Math Reading Teacher, have started passing on this Phrasing and Fluency Reader to teachers as a math resource as well. (For anyone who may have purchased it more than a year ago, please go back to your purchases page and download an updated version.)

Last year I was using 10 at the Sled primarily for the phrasing, fluency and fun factor. That is, after all, the purpose for which it was written in the first place. It can be sung to the tune of Ten in the Bed, and even if students are not familiar with the song, they do catch on to the simple melody quickly and enjoy the repetition. They also hear how certain words fall together naturally to create phrases.

TenattheSledacountingbysphrasingfluencyreaderandsong

After several requests for a black and white student booklet last year, I created one over the summer, using speech bubbles where there are quotation marks used in the color edition:

Th2 10 at Sled 1 Th3 10 at Sled

I wanted to show students what quotation marks really mean, in a visual way, rather than only telling them. I am finding that with this year’s students, this concrete approach has made a huge difference. We compare my color copy with their black and white copy and discuss how quotation marks and speech bubbles really serve the same purpose. *Lightbulb moment*!

The tone, expression (and curiously deep voices) they use when reading the ‘spoken’ lines are hilarious! But clearly, meaningful to them!

Thank you to all of the teacher bloggers who provided feedback during the Christmas in July sale that led to these revisions.

Enjoy these last two weeks!

winter multiplication game

Are you looking for a fun, no-prep multiplication facts game? This snow-themed game allows students to practice their 1-6 multiplication facts. All they need is 2 dice and a handful of counters (or dry-erase markers, if you laminate the pages or insert them into page protectors). Students can quickly play a game in just a few minutes and enjoy an easy clean-up with no extra pieces to keep track of.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Pentomino Exploration”

by Middle School Math Moments

4th – 7th Grade

pentomino

Use pentominoes to get your math class discussing, problem solving, persisting, and thinking! Students really have fun with pentominoes, and the great part about the “fun” is that they are having fun thinking and solving a problem (which they don’t seem to realize!).

I’ve used the activity with a very wide range of students and it has quickly given me valuable information about my new students (I do this on the first day or two of math class). This type of problem solving is accessible to all students, and provides a great opportunity for teachers to observe who’s willing to share ideas, who sits back and watches, how students speak to each other, how well they can verbalize their thoughts, and so on.

The activity is very “simple” – fit the pentominoes into the “frames,” leaving no gaps and having nothing sticking beyond the edges of the frame (not as easy as it sounds:)

There are 3 different sized sets of pentominoes in this product, with 3 different sized frames for them to be fit into.

These pentominoes do need to be copied (I’d recommend using card stock), cut, and laminated. There are frames provided that should be laminated as well.
There are colored pentominoes and black and white ones, in case you want to copy onto colored card stock.

Enjoy the exploration!

FREE MATH LESSON – “Shopping for Holiday Decorations: Money Skills (autism; special education)”

by Autism Classroom News-Christine

2nd – 12th Grade

holiday money skills

For a busy time of year, this is an easy print-and-go set of holiday math / shopping activities for students working on money skills in elementary school or life skills classes. Put the sales flyers in a page protector and either cut out the task cards for single use or put them in a photo album or laminate for re-use.

This freebie is a sneak peek of of my Economics of Shopping Series

The freebie consists of three sales flyers for holiday decorations, 8 task cards for writing in prices, and 2 print and go worksheets to answer questions about the flyer. The sales flyers are the same with 3 different levels of pricing. The worksheets are identical but one has a word bank to assist students. The worksheet with the word bank will only work with the stores called “Holly’s Decorations Sale.” It will not work for the third sheet because the Christmas tree price is different. The words from the bank could be cut out and pasted in the answer section, or laminated and attached with Velcro for re-use.

For more ideas for working with students with autism, check out my blog at Autism Classroom News .

FREE MATH LESSON – “Holiday (Christmas) Shopping Math Activities- Rounding, Estimation, Percent”

by Keep Calm and Teach

4th – 7th Grade

christmas shopping math

FREE Christmas Math Activity– These are versions of fun, holiday shopping math activities for students who are learning about rounding, estimation, and percent (sales tax). The first activity is easier and includes practice with rounding and estimation. The second one is more difficult and includes practice with determining sales tax and total cost of an item. Both activities can be used in one class if differentiation is a goal or if students are able to do both. They could also be used in a math center.

These are authentic activities because the activities are real world situations. I can see this fitting into Common Core Math standards.

You will need to have store advertisements available (either paper or electronic online versions).

Perhaps not today. I would like to share with you my favorite read aloud story for this time of year which will allow you to target the test taking strategies, and with only a little extra time from your day, you can integrate a bit of social skills curriculum in too (but shhh… don’t tell the politicians, or school administrators.)

Multiplication Modeling!

Multiplication Teaching Activities that help students transition to Middle School Math

A fantastic Multiplication bundle of activities that are excellent for students in 4th – 6th Grade. It helps students transition into middle school and learn the various methods to multiply.

Over the years, I learned that it is a huge transition for students from elementary to middle school with basic math skills. In elementary school many students are taught various strategies and methods to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Yet, when the students get to middle school they need to be strong in the algorithm method of math skills. For this reason, I believe it is great to utilize the various strategies and assist students to making the transition to solve multiplication problems which is why this product was created.

Engage your students with multiple multiplication activities that include visuals, hands on tasks, and more!

Enjoy a Multiplication Card Game – Great in Stations.

FREE MATH LESSON – Decimals

Use this excellent Decimal Lesson to teach or review operations with decimals!

My students loved the simplicity and color coding in this math lesson.

More details about how I have used color coding with students learning math skills is described in more detail in the ‘4 Ways to Engage Students in Learning’ Blog.

Perfect for Interactive Notebooks!

Rules of Decimals

This lesson was created for students who struggled to remember the rules of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals when they were first learning this concept.  After students completed the graphic organizers, I allowed them to use the same color pen or colored pencil, to complete decimal problems.  Addition of decimals was completed in red, subtraction in green, multiplication in purple, and division in orange.  This assisted their learning and remembering the rules with decimals.  I hope you enjoy this FREEBIE as much as I and the students I created it for did.
