How To Make Effective Collaborative Groups

By Deann Marin at The Best of Teacher Entrepreneurs

Offering for Educators, Comprehensive Teaching Aides. If you’d like to see what else I have to offer please visit my store.

I found that having children work in small collaborative groups made learning fun for both myself and the class. Interpersonal development is essential for students as they need to learn how to relate to each other in a positive way, small group activities allow them to do this effectively.Working in Groups 8x8 cover

Group Structure: As I approach the new school year and get ready for my class, I look at last year’s  teacher’s recommendations to help figure out levels, once that is done, I make groups with one high level child, two with average ability and one lower level child. I also try to have 2 boys and 2 girls in each group. That way there is diversity in abilities and they can all help each other. I found that the best arrangement for groups is no more than 4 so if I have 25 students I will make 6 groups of 4 and one with 5.  Each group remains the same for one semester, and then we rotate. We would change groups 4 times throughout the year since we had 4 semesters. I liked having them work together for at least two months, getting to know each other, cooperating and allowing each child a chance to be heard.  Of course there are always one or two kids that have a hard time working with others.  If that occurs, you might pull them from the group and have them work on their own, esp if they are disruptive, until they can prove that they are able to work within a group. Setting up the rotations takes a bit of  work since you don’t want to have the same kids in the group more than once.  *See diagram.

Participation:  Each child in the group has a particular job to do: leader, complimenter, secretary, person to pass things out, person to clean up, presenter, etc. Make sure that you let them know exactly what is expected of them.  Depending on the lesson, we play the pencil game, one person holds a pencil and it is their turn to do the talking, when they are done the pencil is passed to the next child, and so on. Everyone has a turn.  Sometimes they will write a  group  report and to make sure that everyone contributes, they have to initial the part that they have written.

Since it is important to put 1 high level, 1 low level, and 2 average students in each group, you might want to assign them a color and a number. For example: Jane is a bright student, assign her blue 1: Kathy really struggles, assign her blue 4; John and Adam are average students, they would be assigned blue 2 and 3.  When you do each rotation, you would need to make sure that they are with different classmates and labeled accordingly.  Keep the number code to yourself, the class should know their color code.

Classroom Set up

Visit my Pinterest page

Classroom set up:  I make two rows of horseshoes. Two members of the group are in front, the other two sit in back of them.  So when it is time for group work, the front row only has to turn their desk around to face the other two. Of course, this takes a bit of practice, but they eventually get it.  When we begin group work, it can become noisy, so I have to remind them to use inside voices, I might hold up a finger, ring a bell, or hold up a QUIET sign. You can also reward the quietest group with something that they would like.  Since it is important to put high level, 1 low level and 2 average students in each group, you might want to assign them a color and a number.  For example: Jane is a bright student, assign her blue 1; Kathy really struggles, assign her blue 4, John and Adam are average students, they would be assigned blue 2 and 3. When you do each rotation, you would need to make sure that they are with different classmates and labeled accordingly. Keep the number code to yourself, the class should know their color code.

The Teachers Pay Teachers “Teacher Appreciation” Sale takes place on May 5 and May 6, 2015.  I can hardly wait!  Everything in my store will be discounted at 20% off.  Don’t forget to use the COUPON CODE to get an additional discount.  The COUPON CODE is:  ThankYou.  Remember to click on the “APPLY” button when you are ready to make your purchases.

One thing that I love about Teachers pay Teachers sales is that the coupons are endless!  The coupon code works no matter how many times I shop.  If I go shopping on May 5th and forget an item, I can always go back later and use the coupon code again.  But . . . once the sale is over with, the coupon code won’t work.

I’ve been busy creating new products and am excited to show you a few here.  This is my first post on The Best of Teacher Entrepreneurs Marketing Cooperative WordPress blog.  Therefore, I am not sure how all the bells and whistles work but it will be fun to take her for a test drive.

That Fun Reading Teacher’s Sight-Word-Stages Leveled Readers: Differentiate just by printing!

SWS intro

As educators, we have all kinds of fun activities and strategies for teaching and reinforcing sight words for reading and writing. Many of them involve practicing these words out of context. The point of Sight Word Recognition is to be able to recognize these words at a glance, in isolation. But all of the practice needn’t be.

I am in the early stages of creating a series of readers called ‘Sight Word Stages’ readers to help teachers differentiate for their students within the same reading level. While some of our students may struggle with putting all of the pieces of the reading puzzle together and need to work on that, there are many others who simply have difficulty remembering, and who require extra opportunities to practice using these little words in context.

Here is an example of a DRA/Reading Recovery Level 2 Reader:

Here’s what’s up with Sandra’s Savvy Teaching Tips.

Happy Saturday! I hope you’re relaxing and getting a chance to enjoy the weekend. It’s pouring rain here in Vancouver this morning, but hopefully things will dry out for my children’s baseball games this afternoon.

I had the chance to participate in a fun product swap hosted by Melissa over at Jungle Learners.

This time around I was partnered with Lisa from Second Grade Stories. I feel very lucky to have been partnered with her.  When I looked around her store, I think I wishlisted half of it.  She has a real science focus which I love.   And check out how cute her blog is.  I’m so happy that I found another great teacher-blogger to follow.

I’ve only just started using this great unit with my kiddos.  But here’s a quick summary of the great stuff included.

Day four of our five day celebration is really what our whole week is about – YOU!  We hope that you have been taking advantage of the deals and goodies we have been offering so far!

What are WE thankful for? Thanks for asking!

Jen: I am so thankful for the Teachers Pay Teachers/blogging community. I feel like a better teacher because of your many ideas, resources, pictures, encouragement, and support. Teaching is tough, but when you surround yourself (literally AND virtually) with positive, like-minded people, the never ending to-do list and constant demands feel more rewarding instead of daunting. THANK YOU for following me and being a piece of my inspiration!

Meredith: I am so thankful for my followers’ feedback and suggestions! When one of my resources works well in a classroom or homeschool, it is one of the best things in the world to hear! I am also thankful when someone shares an idea for a way to improve a resource or make it more useful. With so many amazing resources readily available on TpT, we have a full and diverse homeschooling experience. Thank you to my followers and the TpT community!

Brittany: I am thankful every day for my followers. You motivate me to keep creating even when I’m having writer’s block. You inspire new ideas and help me improve my products with your feedback. Thank you for pulling all of this creativity out of me. I look forward to our continued collaboration! Thank you for following me.

Kelsea: I am so thankful to God for allowing me to do what I love and for my TpT followers! I feel very blessed to be able to stay home with my precious kiddos while still using my teaching talents to create resources for other teachers. It is such a joy to read feedback from teachers who are using my resources in their classrooms. I read every piece of feedback and am constantly learning from you all how to better my products. I appreciate you all more than you could know!

April: I am thankful for all the love and support I get daily from teachers who use my resources! I have never experienced such a positive community of people as I have running my little store! I have received encouraging letters, positive praise, and helpful tips. My words cannot begin to express the love I have for all of you! Thank you for always being a bright spot in my day!

Now that we have shared what we are thankful for, it is your turn – of course, with a little reward for sharing your story!
Visit each of us on Facebook to find the THANKFUL THURSDAY post – leave a comment to let us know what you are thankful for –  teaching related or non-teaching related!

Hello everyone!

Perhaps you’d like your students to demonstrate an understanding of the three ‘R’s. Whether they use stickers, cut-outs or drawing, they may end up with something like this:

Telling Time to Five Mintues – Task Cards and Engaging Review Activity

Telling Time 5s 1

This 15 Telling Time to Five Minutes Task Card resource covers is geared towards grade 1-3 students (or higher grade students experiencing difficulty) who are learning about or reviewing telling time with analog clocks with five minute increments. It can be utilized in a clue gathering, puzzle solving, highly active and engaging activity for those just learning how to tell time on an analog clock or as an alternative to worksheet review for older students. What I love to do is have the kids go through the activity for the first half or two thirds of our review period then spend the remainder of the time reviewing the questions as a class on the overhead projector. Do you use Math Workshops in your class? These would be perfect! All answers are included and the game is really easy to understand.

Independent Reading Response Journal

header

I have always struggled with helping my kids to understand what they are reading, when they read independently.  If you have struggling readers you know that they will read the book, take the AR test and completely bomb.  They can’t remember what they are reading from day-to-day.

So, I created this awesome reading journal.  I have my struggling readers fill out one page per day.  They will work on reading skills such as identifying setting, character traits, main idea, cause/effect, and so on.  It has really helped my kids with comprehension because they are becoming more engaged with their chapter book.  Kids also track the page they started reading on and finished so they are held accountable for actually reading during silent reading time.  I found that just keeping track of their page number makes a huge difference in motivation!

Favorite Structured Language Practice Activities!

Hi everyone,

This is Lori from Fun To Teach!

Fun To Teach blog button 150 x150

Recently I was asked for a list of my favorite structured language practice activities. There are so many that it was hard to choose just a few. I began to compile a list of these tried and true old favorites and I thought I would share them here with you. Here are a couple of fun activities to promote language practices. I would love to hear what some of your favorites are!

Happy Teaching!

Lori

A/B Partners

  1. Each student has a card with either an A or B written on it.
  2. Signal so that students with the As find a B, and Bs find an A.
  3. As prompt their partner with the language prompt or questions
  4. Bs respond with the language reply.IMG_0008
  5. Students switch cards with the same partner find a new partner.

“Switch It”

Use this activity after teaching a grammatical form.

  1. Students write a response to a language prompt or question.
  2. Students find a partner and take turns reading their written reply.
  3. After reading, students switch papers and find a new partner. (Remember perfect practice, not a race.
  4. Language practice continues until teacher calls stop!

POETIC DEVICES QR CODES {RESEARCH}

POETIC DEVICES QR CODES

POETIC DEVICES QR CODES

This is one of my favorite months – for one thing it is a festive season marked by the advent of Easter – and then, it’s National Poetry Month where an appreciation for all things poetic is fostered.

Now, we all know that in order for our students to write creative poems, they must have a sound knowledge of the poetic devices that play an instrumental role in impressing the reader, so with this in mind, I designed 120 QR Codes (40 color, 40 blackline, 40 answer codes) to make conceptual knowledge more concrete. Instead of me lecturing about the elements of poetry, students can find out for themselves by scanning the QR code on each card, writing their responses, and then checking the answers. Now isn’t that learning by Inquiry in itself?

Wish you a Happy Easter and creative National Poetry Month 🙂

Order of Operations Freebie!

Slide1

Students not loving Order of Operations worksheets? Try this FREEBIE instead!!!

I created this game to help with motivation with this task. There are playing cards for 6 players. Each player gets 3 die. I use dice within dice with more advanced students and just add the inner dice to the outer dice for a bigger number to work with. Students are to experiment with putting the numbers in a different order to see which order produces the largest final answer. They will see that it matters very much which operation to complete first, as it can drastically change your answer. Add up the answers and the player with the largest final answer is the winner of the game. This can be modified for different levels of students very easily. They can work in partners and either do the problems together, or they can check each other’s work.

Have Fun!
