Many teachers hate teaching poetry because they don’t know where to begin. This unit will make you and your students love poetry. This complete, no prep unit is a great way to start! Happy (almost) holidays, my friends. Have you noticed an excitement in the air? My students definitely have the Christmas Spirit, and are always thrilled to have some fun seasonal activities do to recognize it!

I run Early Literacy Intervention groups with students from grades 1-3. While we do guided reading and writing, and play skill-building games, once in a while I do like to have them do some worksheets that I can keep a copy of in their files. We are currently working through both of the packages shown in the picture above and they are enthusiastic with the variety of activities at their ‘just-right’ level, too.

Have you ever noticed how perfectly the Santa’s reindeer and Rudolph stories lend themselves to teaching kids about counting by twos? The reindeer are paired up in the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer song and in Santa’s famous line at the end of the classic story Twas the Night Before Christmas. The teachable moment is just sitting in front us begging to be used!

Perhaps that is why I, That Fun ~~Math~~ Reading Teacher, have started passing on this Phrasing and Fluency Reader to teachers as a math resource as well. (For anyone who may have purchased it more than a year ago, please go back to your purchases page and download an updated version.)

Last year I was using 10 at the Sled primarily for the phrasing, fluency and fun factor. That is, after all, the purpose for which it was written in the first place. It can be sung to the tune of Ten in the Bed, and even if students are not familiar with the song, they do catch on to the simple melody quickly and enjoy the repetition. They also hear how certain words fall together naturally to create phrases.

After several requests for a black and white student booklet last year, I created one over the summer, using speech bubbles where there are quotation marks used in the color edition:

I wanted to show students what quotation marks really mean, in a visual way, rather than only telling them. I am finding that with this year’s students, this concrete approach has made a huge difference. We compare my color copy with their black and white copy and discuss how quotation marks and speech bubbles really serve the same purpose. *Lightbulb moment*!

The tone, expression (and curiously deep voices) they use when reading the ‘spoken’ lines are hilarious! But clearly, meaningful to them!

Cyber Monday Prep

What teacher wants to spend the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas break lesson planning meaningful, engaging activities? We want to sit back and just make it to break without going gray.

This year, I want to help with that goal. These are my favorite low-prep technology-integrated activities that will impress your administrators without causing you one bit of stress.

This complete unit is great for upper elementary students. Each concept has an instructional video and foldable activity for an interactive notebook. The best part is that by the time your students have had all 14 lessons, they will be able to create the most incredible PowerPoint presentations without any of your help. Imagine how impressed their classroom teachers will be if you send them back with the ability to make a professional presentation without asking for help along the way!

Every student needs research skills. This 7 lesson unit provides them with all of the steps for responsible and effective online research and all of the work is done for you (the teacher). Simply load the Microsoft Word files to a password-protected page on your class website and then step back and watch the learning unfold. With right-there questions from the linked learning modules, your students can complete all 7 lessons independently. End the 7 weeks of lessons with a research project and I guarantee it will be the easiest 2 months of classes ever! (This assumes you see your students once a week like me- timeline may vary)

For your youngest students, teach them Microsoft Word skills with these instructional videos and Word templates. It will require your students to be readers so that they can follow simple text directions. I do these lessons with late first grade or beginning 2nd graders (sometimes both, depending on the group of students and their skill retention). Also note that I have similar units for PowerPoint and Excel.

I don’t know about how it is at your school, but this time of year when the technology breaks (projectors, laptops, iPads, etc.) teachers freak out. That is why I developed units that require very little of my input. I am always being pulled out of my classroom to go fix something. When a TA or a teacher has to trade places with me, I can walk away confidently because I know my students won’t need much help. These also make great substitute plans. Last school year I had to be out for a week unexpectedly, and it was so stress-free because I just used a unit like these for each grade level.

I can remember my grandmother sitting in her big rocking chair that was placed in her favorite spot, next to a picture window where she kept all of her plants. I would sit on her lap and she would sing about the beautiful autumn leaves dancing to the ground in their colorful dresses. I can’t remember the tune or the words, but that wonderful memory has always been vivid in my mind. as if it were yesterday. I’m so thankful for this experience.

I can remember standing on the front porch waiting for my mom to take me shopping downtown. I loved to shop with her. We used to go to a store called Eli Moore, they had everything that a little girl could want. First stop was the shoe department, and I’d get my black patent leather shoes, next we’d go to the clothes department. I was so spoiled back then, as an only child, I was showered with beautiful things to wear and great toys. Shopping done, we’d go to this café for lunch and a yummy desert. My mom passed on when I was 15 so these moments mean so much for me and I’m thankful for the short time that I was able to spend with her.

I have so many things to be thankful for, a wonderful husband, my Siberian Husky, friends and family who love me. We’re healthy, other than some aches and pains. Our house is in the woods and it is our own little paradise. I can’t think of anything else that I need, other than a few million dollars, lol!

As a teacher, I feel it’s part of my responsibility to help my students think about the good things that they have going, and to be thankful for their blessings. To introduce them to this activity, I tell them the story about my grandmother, and or my mom. Then I will pass out task cards with Thanksgiving images on them and ask the kids to write down what they’re thankful for and we put them into a decorated Thanksgiving box. They can write as many things as they wish, The Wednesday before Thanksgiving recess. I pass the box around the room and each child, as well as myself, chooses a card and we read what is on it, then try to guess whose card it is and give it to its owner.

I usually end up moved to tears and so do some of the kids, as this activity is so meaningful to all of us..

Perfect for Interactive Notebooks!

This lesson was created for students who struggled to remember the rules of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals when they were first learning this concept. After students completed the graphic organizers, I allowed them to use the same color pen or colored pencil, to complete decimal problems. Addition of decimals was completed in red, subtraction in green, multiplication in purple, and division in orange. This assisted their learning and remembering the rules with decimals. Happy almost Halloween everyone! I am so excited to be participating in this Halloween Blog Hop! There are lots of great teacher tips, lessons and freebies along the way, so I hope you’re able to visit each store for inspiration and (who’s kidding who!) the awesome freebies! And check this out:

You’ll see the Rafflecopter machine a little further down. But first, I thought I’d take you down memory lane..

Did you used to sing the classic song 99 Bottles of Beer, with its stick-in-your-brain-forever melody and uncanny ability to teach even the most math-challenged among us to rote count backwards from 100?

I did, and it stuck so much that, years ago, I changed the words and created an activity to go with it. Its adhesive quality remains.

The activity:

Print enough freebies for your entire class, and one for yourself. You’ll also see options for the color version at the bottom of this post.
Plan enough time for each student to take a turn at the board. You’ll see why in a minute!
Have some early finishers color and cut out your freebie, mount on sturdy paper, laminate if you wish, and place magnets on the back for use on a magnetic surface.
Gather the class and draw a wall for your characters to stand on. If you have not read the story with them (optional purchase pictured below), then introduce the activity by discussing their thoughts regarding standing on high walls, predictions about what could happen etc. Throughout the course of the song, one character will be falling at a time.
Now, warm up that singing voice! “Mi, mi, mi…”
Give each child a chance to make a character fall from the wall as you sing this song:

5 Halloween friends on the wall,
5 Halloween friends …

If 1 of these friends has a big fall,
How many friends are left on the wall?

4 Halloween friends on the wall,
4 Halloween friends …

If 1 of these friends has a big fall,
How many friends are left on the wall?

3 Halloween friends on the wall,
3 Halloween friends …

If 1 of these friends has a big fall,
How many friends are left on the wall?

And you simply continue this way until there is one friend left on the wall.

7. Invite your students to discuss what they noticed or found interesting about the song / story. Were there any patterns? Does anyone think that there was math in the story? How could a number sentence be written about what just happened?

8. Have fun!
