FREE LESSON – Differentiated Mother’s Day Card for beginning writers (and BIG TpT site-wide sale on today and tomorrow!)

Free Lesson: Differentiate Mother's Day Card!

Hello my friends!
Is it just me, or did Mother’s Day sneak up on us as quickly as Easter this year?

In times like these, I’m grateful for the stash. (We all have a collection of never-fail, warm-fuzzy lessons and go to printables, don’t we?)

The time-saving factors in this Mother’s Day Card is twofold: 1) Print or photocopy and your students instantly have something to color, and 2) the inserts that allow each child to print (or paste if unable to print) at the level they are comfortable with. By pre-printing the various options, your students have different choices for how they can complete their Mother’s Day message, and most will be able to do something independently.

Disclaimer: Student names do need to be added to individual cards!

Inside MD card 1

Some students might be capable of printing a message on their own. Others may copy from a strip or trace. Those who are not printing yet can simply glue their message in.

Copying Th4

Perhaps you’re working on 1:1 correspondence and would like to take this opportunity to practice. Cut the words apart and have your students reassemble the sentence in order, with or without a model.

Lesson from a recovering over-achiever:

Over the years I realized that I had to adjust my expectations to my circumstances. Some years we may have a smaller number of students in our class, students that work more independently or more support for our students with special needs. Particularly at this time of the year, and even more with Father’s Day, schedules go awry and every week feels more frantic than the week before.

This activity worked best, especially in more challenging years, when I let the students choose how they wanted to do the inside of the card. It came down to a decision:

Was the goal of the activity to teach and assess a particular goal or skill for any or all of my students, or for my students to simply enjoy creating something special for mom?

If you like to #DifferentiateByPrinting as is done with this card, check out these growing collections: Sight-Word-Stages Leveled Reader Sets and Read and Write and More!

On another note…

Did you see what I added to the title?  I am a mom and a teacher and a MAJOR appreciator of teachers myself. Thank you to all of you for getting in there with your students everyday. TpT has announced that it’s time to appreciate teachers with a big, site-wide sale! Please see the button below for details!

Enjoy the sale, and Happy Spring!

Don’t Let the Pencil Craze Get to You!

TeacherCrossEyeTeacherPencilStationCRT

Are pencils driving you crazy?

Students not having a pencil?

Losing them? Breaking the tip?

The pencil craze got to me too!  It doesn’t need to!  During my student teaching we had cups with pencils at each group that we sharpened every morning and ensured there were plenty in each cup, which was great!  That was in first grade. Over the years, I became use to about 2-3 students per class not having a pencil, therefore, I always purchased a box or two at a time and handed pencils out to those students.   This year was a little different for me and the pencil craze got me!  So many lost pencils, broken pencil tips, or students just didn’t have a pencil.

I felt pencil crazed!  A solution must be found!!!

After much thought I came up with my “Pencil Station”!

original-1820453-1

This freebie is a great introduction to biomimicry. Fun exercises and tips to encourage young children to look at owls and to get ideas for ‘innovations and design’.

Biomimicry is an exciting way to inspire young children to be creative, curious and to observe the world. The projects are intended to inspire a playful and creative approach towards problem solving.

This topic also provides an opportunity to bring the learning outdoors – observing, listening and smelling are vital factors to build a foundation upon which ideas inspired by nature can be explored.

Owl watching may be a bit difficult but there a several good videos that you can use to study these magnificent creatures that are inspiring designers and innovators around the world.

free parts of speech

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

FREE Super Hero themed Parts of Speech Posters are a great visual way to teach students to remember the nature of words. This is a great addition to any language arts class.

Easter phrasing, fluency and fun (and a freebie for everyone!)

Easter Rhythm and Rhyme

It was almost Easter, and I found myself fighting off the urge to nod off while my students were reading some of the most entertaining leveled books schools can buy. My primary readers were in a slump. I heard it their robotic, monotone reading. Things needed shaking up with phrasing and pacing with a number of my early readers. I ran the risk of my head falling to my chest and a potential neck injury.

It was time for another Phrasing and Fluency Blitz!

When I taught Reading Recovery, there were times that a student would plateau at a a level for more than a week. We would be advised to take two or three lessons for a phrasing and fluency blitz – rereading some familiar, easier books to rebuild confidence, model and practice phrasing and pick up the pace! Many of our students’ favorites were readers that rhymed, had a lively rhythm and made us both laugh!

I used the freebie The Bunny Hop Easter Song and Movement Activity in Kindergarten poetry books as a music and movement activity. It works particularly well if modeled and echoed first before showing earliest readers the text:

This freebie also has a black and white version included with it – ideal for poetry folders!

It’s all about the Eggs is an Easter Fun Fluency Reader  modeled after I’m All About the Bass (performed by Meghan Trainor, co-written by Meghan Trainor and Kevin Kadish). I’m All About the Bass had been on the radio so much last year that my students knew the tune instantly. I modeled the first read to them, and we practiced a few phrases in isolation before we all enjoyed singing it fluently from beginning to end (over, and over and over again.)

There is a twist on a familiar Fairy Tale in this book that the kids find hilarious (but humor and laughter are topics for other days…).

Limitation of liability: It’s all about the Eggs is not recommended for those who are prone to getting songs stuck in their head or with one last nerve.

Happy Easter everyone!

March into Eggstravagant Math….

MMooreEducationalResources

Enjoy a great activity I’ve completed with First Graders & Middle Schoolers! Every year around spring break I’ve enjoyed executing this wonderful fun egg math activity with my students.  There’s minimal prep time and materials for this activity – you will only need plastic eggs, paper for math problems or task cards already printed with answer key, a shoe box, and of course, candy or treats for students.  The students only need paper and a pencil.  Every year all students became very, very involved with this lesson!  Read more on how I executed this Eggstravagant Math Activity with my students!

1.) Begin preparations.
I put together a sheet of math problems or task cards that are numbered.  I typically always utilized task cards for students to review what has been taught all year that I want students to review.  You may also utilize math problems related to the current curriculum you’ve been teaching.  Cut task cards or printed math problems apart into one problem per small sheet of paper.  Have an answer key printed with the numbered problems – you’ll need this the day of the activity.  This activity may also be completed with any subject being taught!

2.) Put together materials.
Place the individual math problems or task cards into a plastic Egg.  They may be folded if you need to.  Make sure you have enough eggs for students.  I typically have double the eggs than the amount of students I teach.  You will, at minimum, need the total number of eggs to be the total number of students you have in your class.  I always based the number of problems and eggs I had on the ‘fastest working’ students I had and the number of students I was teaching.  It’s better to have too many math problems and eggs than not enough.  I wanted them to work through the whole class time.  Fill all of your plastic eggs with……  Read More at www.MMooreEducationalResources.com

A great activity I hope you read about and enjoy with your learners…

Sincerely,  Ms Moore

FREE WORKSHEET: Subordinating Conjunctions Cheat Sheet for Dependent Clauses!

I teach a writing lab for the community college I work with, and right now we are working on recognizing Independent and Dependent Clauses. (Yep! College students sometimes have to go waaaaaay back to the basics in order to find sentence fragments within their Composition Essays!)

Presentation1

I like to give my students a visual when thinking about parts of sentences. So the first thing I told them is that I have a one-year-old who is about to start walking. Right now, she is holding on to our hands (or walls, or cabinets, or the dog) to help support her walking. Then I ask them, “Is she an independent walker?” Of course the answer is no. “Why?” Their responses were:

“She can’t stand on her own.”

“She relies on other people or things.”

DING! DING! DING! In order to walk, she is DEPENDENT on other people or things. An INDEPENDENT walker is someone who can stand on his or her own.

I then tell them the same goes for Independent or Dependent clauses! “An Independent Clause is a sentence that can totally stand on its own without any help from other clauses. A Dependent Clause relies on other clauses, or complete sentences, to make sense.”

After reviewing types of each, I gave them a Common Subordinating Conjunctions Cheat Sheet to use in order to find fragments (it also includes the five relative pronouns, but I didn’t go too into detail with those–only so much the brain can handle in an hour!). Then I let them know the secret that if their sentence is starting off with one of the words listed on the cheat sheet and does not express a complete thought, it’s probably a fragment.

I hope this cheat sheet helps your students make sense of Independent and Dependent clauses a little bit better!

FREE MISC. Lesson – “Leap Day Birthday Certificates”

If you teach for 30 years 7 to 8 of those years will be “Leap Years”.  If you teach for 30 years in a self-contained classroom with 20 students per year, you’ll have taught a total of 600 children!  Odds are that you’ll have at least one child during your teaching career that will be born on February 29th.

I’ve made a birthday certificate for that eventuality.  There are color and black ink versions.  Some of the certificates can be used this year (2016) which is a leap year.  I’ve also made some that can be used when it’s not a leap year.  Click on the second image to download it from my Teachers Pay Teachers shop.

Here’s some leap year trivia:  Do you think leap year is every 4 years?  Well, almost.  While it’s true that a leap year must be divisible by 4, it’s not the only requirement.  According to a Gregorian calendar, the beginning of a new century must also be divisible by 400 in order to qualify as a leap year.  The year 2000 was a leap year because it’s divisible by 400.  The next century will begin in 2100 and it won’t be a leap year!

FREE LESSON: Using Book Trailers in the Classroom

By:  The Owl Teacher

Grades 2-5

I love to get students hooked on reading and with all the technology in their faces, I thought I’d take advantage of that.  I decided it was time to hook them on book trailers.

Book Trailers are just like movie trailers, where they show you clipits of the book.  It’s usually just enough to get you excited and want to read the book.  You can find many book trailers on the internet to interest your students.

Since we have so many standards to tackle, this project was amazing at meeting many of them – including technology, writing, and reading.

You can read all about it here at my blog- along with receiving a free download of the expectations and a grading rubric.  While you are there, consider following my blog or signing up for my newsletter where you can get freebies once a month!

FREE LESSON: Reading Ladder of Complexity

By:  The Owl Teacher

Grades 2-5

With the new common core, we now have to make sure our students are reading at their highest able level and that their text is more complex than before.  It’s in the standards, whether anyone likes it or not.

During a reading workshop that I attended, I heard about this idea that helps release students gradually into the world of more complex texts.  It’s called using the ladder of complexity.

ladderofcomplexity

Here students start reading a book that they would normally choose and then work their way up to a more complex text.  They also explain why they believe the book is more complex.  Of course, you can always make sure you instruct students on what makes a text more complex.  There is more detailed information on my blog where you can download this free organizer.  Just click here.

FREE MATH LESSON – Math Addition Game

By:  The Owl Teacher

Grades 1-3

When I first began creating products for Teachers Pay Teachers, I experimented a little with creating some fun, tic-tac-toe math games.  That is where this freebie was born!  (Hence my old Owl Teacher Logo.)

addtiontictactoe2 8x8

This is a fun game where students play in pairs practicing their basic addition facts!  Here’s how it works…

Students draws a card and chooses a place to put their designated letter (an X or an O).  Just like tic-tac-toe, students want to get three in a row to win, while blocking and preventing their partner from doing just that.  So in order to place their letter, they must solve the math problem correctly.  Each time a student wins a round, he or she will keep that task card and move on to another.  The student with the most task cards at the end, wins!  Below is an image of four different task cards!

You can download this entire set of task cards FREE by heading over to my Teachers Pay Teachers store here.

FREE LESSON – Speaking and Listening Task Cards

By:  The Owl Teacher

Grades 2- 5

Common Core is now focusing on more than just simple reading skills and strategies!  It’s also making sure that your students are able to communicate and listen well.  (Of course, my district was implementing something similar prior but it was not emphasized as much as now.)

I struggled in the beginning trying to figure out just how I was going to teach my third graders to listen.  Imagine – if there was ever a teacher that could actually 100% teach students to listen… he or she would be sensation!  A millionaire…

Ah, but I’m not here to dream or to convince you that I have the fool proof secret.  But I am here to give you a FREE tool that I use in the classroom to help my students work on this important life skill!

speakinglistening15

First head over to my blog by clicking here and download these really neat task cards!  Then print them in the colors you desire, cut them out, and laminate them back to back.  Cut a small slit along the bottom of the laminated card to insert a craft stick with a dab of hot glue.  Viola!  You have handy task cards!  (Of course, you can eliminate the stick!)

speakinglistening11

Here is a picture of both sides so you can see the thinking stems for both the speaker and the listener:

Speaking and Listening Cards

I hope these cards are useful for implementing those common core standards of speaking and listening… and hey, if you do manage to figure out the mysterious way to get *any* kid to truly 100% listen, be sure to let me know!  🙂

FREE: Math lesson “Multiplication Freebie”

As the school year is winding down before winter break, you are probably looking at just review materials for your little ones!  I imagine if your kiddos are like mine, they are starting to shift around in their seat more and are talking waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about break- as if they are already on it!  There is no way their brain is going to take in any new material right now!

multiplication facts, freebie, math, holiday

So, I created this Holiday Multiplication Math Freebie to review our multiplication facts (because they could really use some extra practice to get those facts down!) that is Christmas based to hold their attention a little as they work on it.

Some of the sheets I have used as morning work or a quick warm up!  I have not only included practice with their facts, but I have also added array practice and story problems!

Head on over to my Teachers Pay Teachers store to download it FREE!

FREE LESSON – “Social Studies Causation Cards”

The Owl Teacher

Grades 3-6

Causation Cards are the newest and next best thing since task cards!

FREE CAUSATION CARDS, Social Studies, Economics

What Are Causation Cards?

Causation cards are a fun, interactive way to review vocabulary and concepts that students need to learn. In addition, this engaging activity helps improve fluency and listening skills.

How Does Causation Cards Work?

The method is similar to the “I have… who has…” cards, where each student has to listen carefully to other students to know when it is their turn. However, causation cards do not contain a repeated language (like “I have… who has…”). Instead it will state an action that a student must perform and a statement they must say. The action can be something simple from jumping in the air to drawing on the board. The statement can be a definition of a term or related concept.

Why Are Causation Cards Important?
This activity is a great resource for practicing those all important speaking and listening skills while building fluency. This resource is a great way to improve student’s reading accuracy, prosody, and fluency rate.

How Do You Use Them In The Classroom?

Have the class read through the set of cards multiple times giving each student a different card each time or read to each other by taking turns.

You can find this fun, interactive FREEBIE by clicking here.

I have many causation cards in my store – and am continuously making more!
