Science Lesson – Earth Day Webquest

Intermediate Science Lesson

By Brittany Washburn

Earth_Day_cover

Send your students to the computer and let them work independently through 8 interactive websites. A reading passage with vocabulary is included to help them answer the 4 essential questions. In my classroom I have my students answer the questions in their notebooks so that I can check for understanding when I review their notebooks. This can be done all at once (45 minutes for most students) or over several days in the classroom.

Hallo from Germany!

My name is Lcie aka TheBeezyTeacher.  I wanted to introduce myself since I’m new to The Best of Teacher Entrepreneurs Marketing Cooperative.  I have been teaching for over 30 years and started my teaching career in Austin Texas.  In the 1980’s I decided to accept a teaching position working for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools Overseas.  My first and only assignment was working here in Germany as an elementary teacher at a school for the dependent children of U.S. soldiers stationed in Germany.  I currently teach kindergarten and continue to have fun working with kids!  I love hearing and meeting from educators from all over the world so come by and visit me at the Beezy Teacher’s blog.  It’s only a hop, skip, and a jump across the pond!

Favorite Structured Language Practice Activities!

Hi everyone,

This is Lori from Fun To Teach!

Fun To Teach blog button 150 x150

Recently I was asked for a list of my favorite structured language practice activities. There are so many that it was hard to choose just a few. I began to compile a list of these tried and true old favorites and I thought I would share them here with you. Here are a couple of fun activities to promote language practices. I would love to hear what some of your favorites are!

Happy Teaching!

Lori

A/B Partners

  1. Each student has a card with either an A or B written on it.
  2. Signal so that students with the As find a B, and Bs find an A.
  3. As prompt their partner with the language prompt or questions
  4. Bs respond with the language reply.IMG_0008
  5. Students switch cards with the same partner find a new partner.

“Switch It”

Use this activity after teaching a grammatical form.

  1. Students write a response to a language prompt or question.
  2. Students find a partner and take turns reading their written reply.
  3. After reading, students switch papers and find a new partner. (Remember perfect practice, not a race.
  4. Language practice continues until teacher calls stop!

POETIC DEVICES QR CODES {RESEARCH}

POETIC DEVICES QR CODES

POETIC DEVICES QR CODES

This is one of my favorite months – for one thing it is a festive season marked by the advent of Easter – and then, it’s National Poetry Month where an appreciation for all things poetic is fostered.

Now, we all know that in order for our students to write creative poems, they must have a sound knowledge of the poetic devices that play an instrumental role in impressing the reader, so with this in mind, I designed 120 QR Codes (40 color, 40 blackline, 40 answer codes) to make conceptual knowledge more concrete. Instead of me lecturing about the elements of poetry, students can find out for themselves by scanning the QR code on each card, writing their responses, and then checking the answers. Now isn’t that learning by Inquiry in itself?

FREE MATH LESSON – “Free Counting Song 1-20 (MP3)”

by Renee Dawn

PreKindergarten – 12th Grade

Counting Song PNG

How do you get kids to behave, calm down, clean up, transition, do homework, time out, stand and stretch? It’s all made easier with a soothing voice counting the numbers 1 – 20 over relaxing music with a soft beat.

This “magic timer” counts numbers like a heartbeat. It is one beat per second, plus intro and fade-out; one minute of music in all. It’s a great behavior management tool to help kids calm their minds and focus on the task at hand. You can replay it for an extended countdown.

It’s also perfect for teaching kids to count numbers 1-20, as the pronunciation is slow, clear and correct.

It’s not just for kids! If you would like a minute of relaxation, then cup your palms over your eyes as you listen to this…

It’s FREE, so enjoy it…and if you would kindly leave your rating and feedback it would be greatly appreciated!

I hope you find this MP3 useful and helpful, and if you’d like to try the longer version it’s here:

FREE – Money Bingo with Online Bingo Caller – Math Centers Pack

Free Money Bingo Pic

Get a Math Centers Pack

Designed for third and fourth grade math centers, Money Bingo features an online bingo caller that will work on most personal computers with internet access. It can also be played on an an interactive whiteboard. Use the online bingo caller to draw random question cards and to display called answers while students play along with their own printed bingo cards.

This download features 4 player cards that can be printed either in black and white or in color. I prefer to print in black and white, as the students need to make calculations and write on their bingo cards.

The game is common core aligned for Third and Fourth Grades as follows:

Third Grade:
CCSS Math Content 3.NBT.A.2
Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
-Making change for purchases made with five and ten dollar bills
-Adding / subtracting to determine difference between the amount of money available and the listed price (i.e. The listed price is $3.50. You have 90 cents. How much more money do you need?

Fourth Grade:
CCSS Math.Content.4.MD.A.2
Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit.
-Making change for purchases made with five and ten dollar bills
-Adding / subtracting to determine difference between the amount of money available and the listed price (i.e. The listed price is $3.50. You have 90 cents. How much more money do you need?
-Simple multiplication / division to determine money equivalents ( i.e. How many dimes are in a five dollar bill?)

ALL students need to warm up!

We all know that stronger students tend to have more background knowledge. More reading in the home, a broader range of experiences, and less television often result in a student who simply knows more content. Put 25 of those advanced learners in a room, and we can skip some of those instructional hooks we use with weaker students . . . or can we?

We may not need to frontload as much with these students, but they still need to warm up. Even a car that has just had a tune up needs to run a bit before hitting the road in February. At the secondary level when students are changing classes, a lot happens in those five minutes between rooms. One social interaction, text, or bad grade in the previous class will cloud that student’s perception of what happens in your room. In order to access prior knowledge and even skills, get that brain warmed up with a rigorous exercise.

Here’s a bundle of twenty bell ringer exercises for advanced high school students. Take a look and decide if they are right for your students. Enjoy 25% off the list price.

Order of Operations Freebie!

Slide1

Students not loving Order of Operations worksheets? Try this FREEBIE instead!!!

I created this game to help with motivation with this task. There are playing cards for 6 players. Each player gets 3 die. I use dice within dice with more advanced students and just add the inner dice to the outer dice for a bigger number to work with. Students are to experiment with putting the numbers in a different order to see which order produces the largest final answer. They will see that it matters very much which operation to complete first, as it can drastically change your answer. Add up the answers and the player with the largest final answer is the winner of the game. This can be modified for different levels of students very easily. They can work in partners and either do the problems together, or they can check each other’s work.

Have Fun!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Gift of the Magi – Close Reading Analysis”

by Homegrown Teacher

8th – 10th Grade

This free holiday product is a close reading analysis of O. Henry’s short story, “Gift of the Magi.” There is a teacher’s instruction page, which details how I have used this document in my own classroom, specifically targeting the importance of the gradual release process. A full sample annotation packet is also included.

This text lends itself to teaching students the importance of annotation targeting vocabulary, textual evidence for setting and characterization as well as allusions.

Enjoy this timeless story as your students get practice using the close reading strategy!
